I remember the 80s pretty well my friend. It was my childhood but it was a reality. Things were different, calmer and more fun. The world seemed so relaxed and people weren't so displeased with everything. We actually didn't survive by keeping our phones in our pockets, we wrote letters and had pen pals. We walked miles to go see friends and stayed out till the sun went completely down. Neighbors got along in most neighborhoods and we even had occasional neighborhood parties. I think about the 80s often. I'm blessed I was a part of it.

A beautiful song, one of my all time favourites. Always loved that instrumental break, so concise and perfect. Crowded House were a great live band, and the inter- band banter and the wonderful rapport with their audience was always great fun. It was so sad when the original drummer, Paul Hester, committed suicide in 2005, he was always clowning about on stage, but it clearly masked a recurring depression. I wish he could have taken this song to his heart, and not let his demons win.

Neil and Tim Finn are kiwi brothers, and formed Crowded House after ending a fantastic decade or two with their NZ band, Split Enz.... we are so proud of them here in NZ!!! Neil wrote and performs this song...a classic!

I can be at Walmart’s and hear this song (if I’m lucky) and the lighter goes up...not a real lighter, but still. The hand is raised, the swaying commences...great memories! Thank you!

I love how music brings back memories of the song or life. Sometimes I remember the movie it was in. It is wonderful how music can engage every sense.

The music industry wasn’t’ geared toward and full of children back then. Thought I might point that out.

I have a fickle heart. One week I will have a favorite reactor, but in a week I find someone else and I think they are my new favorite, but you outshine them all and I always, ALWAYS come back to you.You are just like us in our love of music. You give everything a chance and show so much emotion and joy when you listen to the songs that shaped our lives, and for that,we are so grateful.Besides, your followers have such a great taste in music.

Neil Finn is, in my opinion, the greatest lyricists ever in our modern age. I'm mainly a metal guy, but Crowded House songs transport me immediately to me and my Dad crooning away in the car going here and there. I saw their (1st) Farewell to the World concert at the Opera House and it was utterly amazing. For those of you interested, it's on youtube - search for 'crowded house farewell to the world'. They played this song as the closer, and it absolutely brought the house down.

Love Crowded House since the very beginning, so many great songs man.... "Don't Dream It's Over" i distinctly remember the first time i heard it (either late '86 or early '87), it was actually a week before it entered the Portuguese Top 20, it was on the "Countdown" US music TV show, hosted by Adam Curry that was broadcasted over here, they performed it live on that show, just after the record came out. The next week it entered the Portuguese Top 20, and i saw the video clip too then ... 😄 Bought the single a couple of days after that, still have it. "Something So Strong" from the same album followed shortly there after.... 😉

This song is perfection. What makes a great song - who knows, but it is indescribable how to list every single thing that this song has going for it. Magical; intangible... I agree with you, the writer is a genius.

I was supposed to see Crowded House last night at Trinity Collage Dublin Ireland, but of course all concerts cancelled because of the pandemic. They have a really beautiful song called Better be home soon. Please take a listen. I am really enjoying your reactions to some of my favourite artists and of course you are right the music was amazing in the 80’s. I’ve seen many of the bands live back then. REM, U2 Tracey Chapman, The Cure, The Smiths the list goes on. Great memories

I am a child of the 80s and I have to agree! SO much good music in ALL genres - pop, r&b, rock, country, soul - everything. And it was pre-Internet, which was also AMAZING. People actually talked to each other and weren't taking 10,000 pictures of themselves. Try "Luka" by Suzanne Vega from 1987.
