Crowded House may be the best live show I’ve ever seen. I saw countless shows in and around San Francisco in the 70s, 80s, 90s. This band was spot-on musically and among the most generous and relatable performers I’ve seen. Oh, and what about Split Enz?

Just discovered your page via your reaction to Rush’s La Villa Strangiata. Loved that reaction! Huge Rush fan but perhaps even a bigger fan of Crowded House/Neil Finn (seemingly odd mix but that’s me). Neil Finn said he writes his lyrics in such an abstract way so the listener can find their own meaning in them. So the meaning should be personal and applied however it works for you. Whether through reactions or on your own time, do a deep dive into Crowded House and Neil Finns’ solo work and his work with his brother, simply called the Finn Brothers. You won’t regret it. It’s the type of music that is good to great at first and just gets better the more you listen. Would love to see a reaction to a song called Sinner on Neil’s first solo album Try Whistling This. IMHO it is his masterpiece. And that’s saying something considering the enormous body of quality work he’s done

Thanks for checking this out. Crowded House/Neil Finn are my favorite band/singer. Surprised you didn't recognize the song, it has been played in so many supermarkets and department stores. Good luck on trying to figure out Neil Finn lyrics, they aren't usually linear, more impressionistic in their style and content. If you want to check out more Crowded House, try Weather With You, Better Be Home Soon or Distant Sun. Not huge in the U.S., more of a cult band here. Big in New Zealand/Australia and the U.K.

Crowded House is a wonderful band. They were originally Split Enz, and reformed as Crowded House in 1986. The Freedom Within/Freedom Without is also a reference to lyrics from the Beatles White Album, and the paper cup reference is to a Beatles Song "Across the Universe", but it's also about Freedom, and how the singer is overwhelmed thinking about his Dreams, which are flooding his mind like a deluge.

I think it's mainly about the struggles in relationships. He's saying that the world can be hard, life can be tough, and you may question and doubt our relationship. There may be people and forces trying to come between us, but we can't let them win. I'm here with you, in not going anywhere. I was in college when this came out, and immediately became a crowded house fan. You don't hear it on this song, but I think many of Neil Finn's songs have unusual chord sequences that make them interesting.

Here's what I think the lyrics in the first part of the song mean: I think it's about his relationship and this is what he's telling his girlfriend... The "freedom" he sings about, is choice. The "freedom within" is choices you make. "Freedom without" is choices other people make. All these choices lead to any number of outcomes. The out comes are "the deluge". Trying to guess what will happen based on all possible choices both of them make is like trying to contain a flood/deluge in a paper cup. "It's impossible to predict the future" of their relationship is what he's saying in my interpretation. "There are battles ahead. Many battles are lost" Meaning: They are going to have disagreements (battles ahead). Some of the disagreements will only be resolved if each of them are willing to compromise (battles lost). "But you'll never see the end of the road while you're traveling with me" Meaning: even though they may not see eye to eye on all things, it will take more than that for him to leave her (the end of the road, so to speak).

Maybe he means that being externally free, and being free in your own mind, are different things. If you are "trying to catch the deluge in a paper cup," you are creating your own unfreedom.
