He was proud of his first job "killing chickens", what a hero!

Hi Bachir. My family was living in poverty. Working in a chicken processing plant was the only work available. The work was brutal and I was initially traumatised when I was put to work in the killing bay but tried to find some pride in my work. I tried to maintain a semblance of humanity by recommending a method of making the death of the chickens less traumatic for them. The management didn't listen. Six months later I was able to find another job. But is stuck with me that we should always be open to new ideas.

Thanks, Cam. Lovely to hear from you! Yes, I know your dad. In fact, the memory of collaborating with him in building and inventing imaginary worlds with LEGO in his back garden was a small but important part of what inspired me to start up the software company Crowdicity. The concept of the democratisation of innovation (playing together to come up with useful ideas) is at the heart of this software and was the inspiration for this talk. Your dad is very cool (cool being a word that I hope translates across the generations).

wwooah I'm surprised this is 4 years ago. this idea is great. I think the idea was too early. but it might work better these days.

You are right. Back then this was all a bit cutting edge, but I'm pleased to say it's a mainstream way of innovating now. And there's a new phrase associated with it: Collective Intelligence.
