I cover how to do a recessed target crown in the lathe. These crowns are great for hunting type rifles. The recess allows the main part of the muzzle to be protected from damage. It also allows for a 90 degree muzzle off the bore.

help! so when you cut that 45 deg are using the crossfeed with the compound? I can cut it turning in with the compound but turning out i pull the tool off.( my first barrel)
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 7 жыл бұрын
Starting in the bore- straight out with cross slide- the then 45 degree cut using only the compound- then straight across using only the cross feed. Lock the carriage down too. If your tool is coming loose you need to make sure it's tight and you have clearance under the cutting portion of the bit to allow for cutting a recess. Let me know if this helps.

I enjoy your videos and enjoy learning what you share, and use it with my airguns. However the 16" air gun barrel I can't center it with the bore using a spider. so crowns are made by it being chucked up in the lathe, so it can't be perfect I do not know on a air rifle how much it affects the accuracy , I have some testing to do that I plan on doing some videos on. I know a lot of guys crown by hand as you did in the first video with decent results. Iam not a machinist I am learning as I go with my 10" hevy south bend. I share for guys who like airgun stuff, its boring for most who are not addicted to airguns I'll show slowly with details so they can see and understand what Iam talking about and hopefully learn it for themselves . also with air rifles we usually chamfer at the bore then do a nice face to finish the crown. I see with your powder burner you dont do that. any input would be appreciated, Iam very glad there is a guy out there like you making those videos you share . Thanks Mike

I've never gotten much into air rifles, but then again, I've never shot a high power air rifle. I know if you have a steady rest you could crown it that way too. Then you are hoping your OD is good. Only other option is to make a short tube with two sets of 4 screws about 6-8" apart. You chuck that up in a 4 jaw usually, then you can dial it in with the two sets of screws. Basically a mini headstock held in your chuck. That would be the best, but you could also use an adjust true type chuck. I can't comment on accuracy of that, but I would assume that the same principles are being applied to ether rifle. Id'e be curious to learn the reasoning behind the chamfer. Thanks for the comments and feedback, it is greatly appreciated. Take care.

I finished the recessed target crown it part of a video Iam doing with two project air rifles, I also made mention of your channel and said that is where I seen you do it. The short crisp chamfer I always seen just at the bore edge as part of making sure the end of the lands are even and taper off and slightly exposed visibly with the eyes if you have good vision, LOL its subtle but I see ones little more pronounced, also the Lothar walther barrels for airguns and the german weihrauch barrels and usually airgun barrels with have that small crisp chamfer just at the bores exit. I'll be testing barrels in different situations I have a rifle coming tomorrow I can swap barrels in the block and also machine down barrels for it, they get set in with a set screw and are removeable. once in and the scope is re calibrated for each barrel it will be good to go. so with that I'll get to test how accurate different barrels are in different scenarios. a lot of airgunners who do their own chop and crown have good results and thats using the basic hand tools & file compared to genuine full out center of bore using a lathe. I am just tired of the hear say and want to find out what does what once and for all plus its what I like to do its fun. I think I know what your talking about I see a collar made with screws I think on Toms web site using also a steady rest, and thats fine also it will be somethng else to make and get into Your a really good machinist thanks for sharing and taking the time putting out some great videos, mine will never be great they will be what they are just airgun interest which is needed

Had a question. I'm a relatively new gunsmith and wanted to know if you could give me some suggestions about lathes. Size, brand, certain things to look for. I'm currently using a Birmingham YCL 12x36. Noticed you had a South Bend (that's what I trained on). Thanks for your time
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 5 жыл бұрын
There could be a book written on that question. Your lathe should do good work. Usually a 12x36 to 14x40 or so lathe is a good size. Short spindle length and 1-3/8 inch or larger spindle bore. The lathe in this video was a SB 10L 10X36" lathe. It did some really nice work while I had it, but it's about the smallest machine I would want to do barrel work on on a regular basis. I also had a SB 13x40" from the 60's and that was a nice machine, but you are limited to 1k-1.2K RPM's. Usually the heavier the better. Do a good search for gunsmithing lathe and you can read for days on the subject. I'm looking for a Clausing 6913. that is one of my top 3 gunsmithing lathes.

I have a 1943 KS sheldon with 1.0625 spindle bore. Anything that won't fit through that can be done over the ways with a cathead.

What lathe is that? Nice. Also what RPM did you have it at? Was surprised that you used HSS instead of carbide, is it more common to use HSS? I guess it wouldnt be easy to hone carbide bit.
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 7 жыл бұрын
It's a 1951 South Bend Heavy 10L that I restored to like new. I think I was running at or close to 750 RPM, could probably go a little faster, but it works OK at this speed. I learned with HSS, and have used carbide in the past I just have not had the extra cash to swap a bunch of stuff over to carbide. I would like to get a carbide parting tool though. I don't run a commercial shop, so I can spend a little time sharpening bits instead of swapping out a carbide bits.
@charles1379
@charles1379 7 жыл бұрын
Hi , you would find that you can get a sharper edge and leave a finer finish with HSS rather than carbide. carbide is more wear resistant, lasts longer especially for hard materials but HSS definitely leaves a batter finish on materials that it copes with.

sorry new to gun mods what does a crown like this do?
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 7 жыл бұрын
There are a few reasons for cutting a crown like this. #1 is being able to have a straight 90 degree crown which is used on many target rifles. Second is you have your primary crown directly off the bore Recessed to protect it from getting dinged. I have these crowns on most of my hunting rifles and find they shoot just as good as an 11 degree crown for me. My main hunting rifle has this crown and it holds 1/2" MOA out past 600 yards. I think Copper and a few other custom rifle makers use this crown on their rifles also.

So Coming 90 Degrees Of The Bore Will Improve The Aim Of The Gun ? Interesting I had no idea this would effect the bullet.
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 7 жыл бұрын
It won't increase the aim, but it will give the bullet a more consistent exit out of the bore. Doesn't really matter it's it's straight 90 degrees from the bore or an 11* crown which is 11* out from 90. As long as they are both symmetrical and concentric to the bore you should get consistency.

Did you just crown a barrel using a 3 jaw???
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but it is a 3 jaw adjust-tru buck chuck. Not a standard 3 jaw scroll. This buck chuck allows you to dial in this end of the barrel just like a 4 jaw. It was zeroed out to within 0.0002" for the last 2.5" of the bore. Still takes 10-15 minutes to dial it in on average.
