Excelent instruction! I just lost my one in the bush! Must be 3 to 4 years since I made it, still like new. Loved it, so I'm back for a refresher before making another using the same Atwood 550 cord. Bomb proof, but more importantly super comfortable. Thanks.

Excellent! Found this after trying the Kumihimo leash splice and cover. For whatever reason, it all clicked in my brain. I did a different weave method to bring the ends further down and tied the cover towards the loop. Turns out like yours when finished.

I don't see how this is possible with 80 feet of cord x 2. I want to make a 6 foot leash. According to the instructions he used 39.5 feet for a 3.5 foot leash. So I doubled it but make all those knots with 80 feet of cord is VERY difficult! How did you do with 40 feet and not get all tangled up? I would buy one from you.

very simple knot. in the video it shown knots that goes counter clock wise. i always liked doing it 3 levels counter clock, and then switch to clock wise. if you want to have a triangle shape, use 3 cords.

Thank you for the clear explanation. After trying these knots separately during a few months, I managed to make this dog leash in combination with a conquistador slip collar. It wasn't perfect yet, but I'm working on it. Since I like the Mathew Walker knot, next time I'm going to try to start the dog leash with an 8 strand MW knot so that the knot is thicker and the 4 strands for the small herringbone part at the bottom are already attached.

At the 16:40 mark, I think I might insert the cord into the leash, then run it down through the snap hook, back up into the leash and out the other end. This would make it look as if it were simply passing through the leash, while doubling and reinforcing the connection to the snap hook. This would be especially good for larger or stronger dogs.

How do you estimate the amount of cord you need to complete this leash? it seems, to my beginner's mind, that crown knots take up, or require quite a lot of cord. One fellow made a leash using a 4 strand crown knot, and said 50 feet of each color was needed for a 6 foot leash. I did not have enough cord for a 4 foot leash, let along a 6 foot leash. This is something that is challenging (for me). My second challenge is managing very long lengths of cord as I am making a given project. Thank you, Mark. My husband and I are retired and are really loving learning how to knot and braid paracord. We love your videos.

@Paracordguild
@Paracordguild 5 жыл бұрын
Hey there Matthew! Excellent question. Indeed, you wrap around three times instead of two times. This will result in a longer knot. Naturally all further steps are a bit longer as well, but following the same pattern. Congratulations in getting this far, you have learned not one knot, but also how to make it longer and shorter! @@siceros I do wish you luck! The crown knots can be hard on the hands. Somehow I was able to do the leash quickly, but sometimes doing it in several sittings can be more enjoyable. As far as the length of the cords/ends goes, you could use shorter strands and splice in more length when needled. For some reason folks avoid doing this like the plague, but it works! I want to follow this so bad but after you weave all 4 cords and are starting to do the herringbone (11:22 ) you say we have always exited with a over one when clearly the cords coming out are not all over... very confused here
@Paracordguild
@Paracordguild 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Lynn for the comment. It may indeed seem so, mostly because the cords that are coming out at the very start can not be perfectly lined up. As long as you followed the rule of 4 unders and 4 overs, you will always end with an over. If you still have any issues, try tying this smaller multi strand herringbone knot. It may give you the insight you need to tie the bigger version! kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGi3l2uIg5ion68 I have tied the same knot in this video as well, maybe that can also be of help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGHPq2ePr7iBd9k Please, be sure to let me know if you still have any issue tying this knot. Great tutorial, but how the heck did you work with 39' cords without a tangled mess every few minutes?
@Paracordguild
@Paracordguild 6 жыл бұрын
Hey! The two cords are halved at the very start so you are using about 20 foot long ends. At the start it takes a bit of patience, but the crown knots don't really tangle your cords all that much. Also, the good thing is that with every knot, your ends get shorter and easier to work with! If you still dislike working with long ends of paracord, try this technique: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5DIcnWEZZ6SfNU Mark

@Paracordguild

Hi there! Paracord is usually stronger than the snap hook. Even two strands can be incredibly hard to break. Naturally the momentum of the pull exerts more strain on the cord than a static load, but still, for most dogs it should be fine. Mark

Hey there! The Matthew Walker knot is not a must. You can skip it and go directly into a crown knot. It is just a nice transitional knot. As far as the knot goes, it takes time to learn. @BlackenedBrew
@BlackenedBrew 7 жыл бұрын
Dennis Lackey OK, if I did the math right... Each foot in length for the final leash requires (2) 136 inch long (or 11.3 foot long) strands. So if this is correct, for a 5 foot long finished leash you would need (2) 56.6 foot long cords. I make no promises that this is correct.

How did you come up with 136inches???
@BlackenedBrew
@BlackenedBrew 6 жыл бұрын
In the original video, the materials list that you need 39'-6" for a 3'-6" long leash. 39'-6" equals 474 inches long. Take that 474 inches, divided by 3 1/2 feet comes out to about 136 inches (a little less, I rounded up) needed per foot of leash. FYI, I used this formula to make a 5 1/2 foot long leash... came out to 748 inches (62'-4") (136 * 5.5= 748 inches)... the final length was about the 5 1/2 feet that I wanted (closer to 5'-10"). My dog pulls when we walk, so the leash has stretched out longer and is about 6'-6" now. I'm ok with it stretching out, I usually wrap the leash around my shoulders so my hands are free, so no biggie if it's a little longer. I also took one of those black alligator clips that you use to secure papers together (overgrown paper clip with handles), fed it through the leash and now I can't just clip poop bags on that so I don't have to carry those either.

First of all, thank you for the awesome tutorial. What do you do with the ends that are left after the herringbone knot? Specifically the one by the handle.

Hey! After tying the herringbone knot I cut the ends as close to the knot as possible, lightly melt them (be careful not to burn the other cords nearby) and push them under the herringbone knot. Once all the ends are out of sight I roll the knot. Mark

Paracord guild when you say you "roll the knot" what exactly does that entail? Sorry, I'm new to Paracord stuff.

@@bbatse Put the know between your hands and roll out back and forth. It helps it to settle. (I realise you asked a year ago- I assume/hope you have found out?)

I am at the herringbone part, I did all steps correctly but the knot is never "straight", the "herringbone" part is never a straight line, it's always oblique. I tried tighting but it doesn't come out straight in any way. I'm pretty confident with all the steps (I re-did it few times, even made practice with a smaller one) but I cannot figure it out... Any suggestion? :)

Congratulations on getting through the knot tying! Not many can do this! I am well familiar with what you are experiencing with the herringbone knots. The way I get them to look good/round is to tie them very loose, then gradually tighten up. Make sure that the "V" shapes (crossings) are lined up and it should work out. Practice makes perfect, keep at it! Have a great day, Mark
