I don't see how this is possible with 80 feet of cord x 2. I want to make a 6 foot leash. According to the instructions he used 39.5 feet for a 3.5 foot leash. Thank you for the clear explanation. After trying these knots separately during a few months, I managed to make this dog leash in combination with a conquistador slip collar. It wasn't perfect yet, but I'm working on it. Since I like the Mathew Walker knot, next time I'm going to try to start the dog leash with an 8 strand MW knot so that the knot is thicker and the 4 strands for the small herringbone part at the bottom are already attached.

At the 16:40 mark, I think I might insert the cord into the leash, then run it down through the snap hook, back up into the leash and out the other end. This would make it look as if it were simply passing through the leash, while doubling and reinforcing the connection to the snap hook. This would be especially good for larger or stronger dogs.

How do you estimate the amount of cord you need to complete this leash? it seems, to my beginner's mind, that crown knots take up, or require quite a lot of cord. One fellow made a leash using a 4 strand crown knot, and said 50 feet of each color was needed for a 6 foot leash. I did not have enough cord for a 4 foot leash, let along a 6 foot leash. This is something that is challenging (for me). My second challenge is managing very long lengths of cord as I am making a given project. Thank you, Mark. My husband and I are retired and are really loving learning how to knot and braid paracord. We love your videos.

Quick question about the Herringbone knot. If I spliced mine a little further down the leash and I need three loops to cover the area with the Herringbone knot, do i do the under-over three times instead of two?
@Paracordguild5 жыл бұрын
Hey there Matthew! Excellent question. Indeed, you wrap around three times instead of two times. This will result in a longer knot. Naturally all further steps are a bit longer as well, but following the same pattern. Congratulations in getting this far, you have learned not one knot, but also how to make it longer and shorter! @@siceros I do wish you luck! The crown knots can be hard on the hands. Somehow I was able to do the leash quickly, but sometimes doing it in several sittings can be more enjoyable. @Paracordguild8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Lynn for the comment. It may indeed seem so, mostly because the cords that are coming out at the very start can not be perfectly lined up. Great tutorial, but how the heck did you work with 39' cords without a tangled mess every few minutes?
@Paracordguild6 жыл бұрын
Hey! The two cords are halved at the very start so you are using about 20 foot long ends. At the start it takes a bit of patience, but the crown knots don't really tangle your cords all that much. Also, the good thing is that with every knot, your ends get shorter and easier to work with! If you still dislike working with long ends of paracord, try this technique: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5DIcnWEZZ6SfNU Mark

Hi there! Paracord is usually stronger than the snap hook. Even two strands can be incredibly hard to break. Naturally the momentum of the pull exerts more strain on the cord than a static load, but still, for most dogs it should be fine. Mark

So what length do I need to make a five foot length leash? Does this include the handle?
@BlackenedBrew7 жыл бұрын
Dennis Lackey OK, if I did the math right... Each foot in length for the final leash requires (2) 136 inch long (or 11.3 foot long) strands. So if this is correct, for a 5 foot long finished leash you would need (2) 56.6 foot long cords. I make no promises that this is correct.
@jagersilva21697 жыл бұрын
Chuck Hackett this helped thanks
@Alayazize19936 жыл бұрын
How did you come up with 136inches???
@BlackenedBrew6 жыл бұрын
In the original video, the materials list that you need 39'-6" for a 3'-6" long leash. 39'-6" equals 474 inches long. Take that 474 inches, divided by 3 1/2 feet comes out to about 136 inches (a little less, I rounded up) needed per foot of leash. FYI, I used this formula to make a 5 1/2 foot long leash... came out to 748 inches (62'-4") (136 * 5.5= 748 inches)... the final length was about the 5 1/2 feet that I wanted (closer to 5'-10"). My dog pulls when we walk, so the leash has stretched out longer and is about 6'-6" now. I'm ok with it stretching out, I usually wrap the leash around my shoulders so my hands are free, so no biggie if it's a little longer. I also took one of those black alligator clips that you use to secure papers together (overgrown paper clip with handles), fed it through the leash and now I can't just clip poop bags on that so I don't have to carry those either.
