Here are the steps I've taken and explain in my video:
Steps to successfully propagate a crown of thorn by a cutting
1. Safety
The crown of thorns secretes a toxic sap when it is cut. Make sure you wear gloves to protect yourself in case the sap irritates your skin.
Wearing gloves will also protect you against the thorns.
2. When To Propagate
The best time to propagate your crown of thorns is when there isn't a risk of it getting any frost. For some places that don't get frost, you can propagate the crown of thorns all year round, but if you do get frost wait until spring or summer before you try and propagate them.
3. Getting The Cutting
Cut a new growth stem. This will give you the best chance for success.
4. Preparing The Cutting
The cutting will need to be dried out for 3 to 7 days. Enough time that the end of the cutting calluses over. This will lower the risk of the cutting rotting.
5. Potting The Cutting
Using cactus potting mix, place the cutting an inch deep. Press around the cutting to make it nice and firm and secure.
6. Watering The Cutting
After the crown of thorn cutting is potted, give it good water until water runs out of the bottom of the pot.
The next time you water it will depend on your climate. You can wait until the top inch of soil is dry and then give it another water, doing and you won't water more than once a week probably.
7. Where To Place The Cutting
Place the crown of thorns cutting out of direct sunlight. Placing in direct sunlight will increase the likelihood that the cutting will dry out and fail.
The cutting should be placed somewhere it will receive indirect light for more than 6 hours a day.
8. How Long Will It Take For Roots To Form?
I'll follow this video up with a progress video showing how my cutting is going.
