I have several plants from a friend who has passed away. The Crown of Thorns has only blossomed once in 10 years as I live in the shaded forest. I'm bringing my plants in for the winter so came to KZbin University to learn how to prune my very leggy and lopsided houseplant. I'm so glad to learn from you that I can prune heavily without over-stressing myself or the plant. Bonus that propagation is so straight forward. I was afraid to take risk with such a treasure. Thank you! Subscribed in Vermont

Oh thanks this is very good video and lots of information on it’s care. We’ve had several days of rain, yesterday we had 4” of rain and my crown of thorn pot is soaked, sitting on the patio table. I will have to watch that the soil doesn’t stay wet, I don’t want to lose it as I’ve had her for 3 years and she’s 14” tall. Thank you!

Great question. I've put holes in plastic pots for both anthuriums and orchids, but haven't tried it for crown of thorns. Unless you're using a heavy potting mix i don't think it's really necessary, but no harm in trying. Let me know how it works out.

Love my CofT. I'm in USA Zone 9a. Mine is outside in a self waterinng pot with hot days and almost daily rain in summer. I check the bottom of the pot after rain and pour out the excess water. So far, all is good. Now I'm ready to take cuttings and start new plants... Question: I see you did not remove the flowers before inserting cutting in soil. Correct?
@thelmamccatty9181
@thelmamccatty9181 10 ай бұрын
Sorry for this late response. You're correct. Normally I would remove flowers and excess leaves when sticking stem cuttings to roots. This helps the cutting to conserve moisture and energy. I seemed to have missed a few flowers in this case.😮 Maybe I was afraid of the thorns?😊

Good question Jeremy. I don't have any direct experience with this, but don't think the street light will cause your crown of thorns to bloom any less, as they love lots of light.

I just purchased this type of plant and love the pink blooms. Mine are still rather small but have these thick leaves but I cannot find thorns anywhere. Will they show up after these plants grow? There is a QR code to scan for care info. I did take a photo of it but noting happened. I give up with scans as I have tried on many things and it is the same. I am in HOT Phoenix AZ so just wonder how our hot and dry climate may affect these. I have them in a south facing pergola and they are blooming. So they do get partial shade. But for winter do I need to cover them as we do get some cold nights down sometimes to 30F?
@gardeningwithcalyx
@gardeningwithcalyx Ай бұрын
Your plant may be a thornless type (species) of crown of thorns. However, the thornless type likes the same hot, dry growing conditions as their thorned cousins. Definitely protect them from frost, either by moving them indoors in cold weather or covering them if it’s a brief frost.

@thelmamccatty9181
@thelmamccatty9181 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question Mary Lou. Yes, cut taller stems if you want your crown of thorns to have a full shape. But try to cut just above a young side shoot as sometimes a cut stalk fails to send out a new shoot.

What soil do you recommend because I’m needing to transplant, my Madagascar crown of thorns thank you for the help
@gardeningwithcalyx
@gardeningwithcalyx Ай бұрын
A - The main problem when transplanting crown of thorns is stem rot, so its very important that the potting mix doesn’t retain too much water. Avoid using a heavy soil (e.g., clay) in the transplant media. A mixture of 2 parts free draining soil + 1 part sand + 1 part organic matter should be good. If you’re using a standard commercial potting mix, you can add up to 20% sand or perlite to improve drainage.

Thanks so much. One question. I have a crown of thorns plant that has been the same exact size for over a year now, it’s healthy and always in bloom but it never has any new growth, is there something wrong or is the pot maybe too small and needs to be upsized in order to get the plant larger?
@thelmamccatty9181

Maybe it's a dwarf variety? Healthy and blooming sounds good to me.😊 A suggestion - after the blooming season apply fertilizer high in nitrogen to boost growth.

Good that you're having flowers Pat. But I agree that bare stalks are not attractive. More water, fertilizer and shade will produce more leaves. You can adjust any of these, but in moderation, to see what will give the desired results.

Hello Eviekalina, you mentioned spring so I assume you're in the southern hemisphere. We're in early fall in Jamaica and ours have just started to flower naturally. Seaweed fertilizer should be good (if you don't mind the smell) as it's low in nitrogen. For more flowers, give them lots of sunlight, but not so much water. Thanks for watching our channel and send a comment❤

@thelmamccatty9181
@thelmamccatty9181 8 ай бұрын
Hi Marilyn, it varies quite a bit. I'd say you stand an equal chance of getting 0, 1, 2, or 3 shoots coming out below the cut. And many times the shoots appear 3 - 4 inches below the cut.

The traditional varieties with smaller blooms can get quite tall and lanky. I've seen some 4 - 5 feet tall when grown in the ground! The hybrids are definitely better when growing in pots.

Is there a plant that looks similar to crown of thorns l? I bought cuttings from someone who said it was crown of thorn, but it has much thinner stem and the leaves seem different. I never saw the adult plant so I can’t say what it looked like it.
@thelmamccatty9181
@thelmamccatty9181 Жыл бұрын
Hi Alynna, please forgive this late response. There are many different types of crown of thorns, some with long thin stems and tiny flowers. So it's possible your plant is one of these 'native' variety. You could try to identify it using a plant app.

Would using sand from the beach kill them, or could I use it?
@thelmamccatty9181

There is too much salt in beach sand. So do not use to plant crown of thorns or any other plant. Instead, try to get river sand. Its also known as construction sand and many hardware stores sell this in bags.

@thelmamccatty9181
@thelmamccatty9181 Жыл бұрын
Crown of thorns leaves turn yellow as they react to any stress such as changes in location, sunlight, water, fertilizer. Usually they recover quickly as they adjust to the change. So as long as they're not overwatered and are getting enough sunlight they should be OK.

Thanks for your comment Audrey, the last thing I'd wish to do is to mislead. But to my mind the propagation of crown of thorns is so simple that I allotted about two and a half minutes to this early in the video, and allowed more time for the second part of the title, i.e., how to grow more crown of thorns. So maybe next time I should do propagation and growing in separate videos? Thanks for your support, and please keep watching.
