Mona Grudt got the only score above a 9 in the entire competition, a 9.19 in the preliminary interview, where the judges tend to be more conservative in scoring than in the semi-finals and in the context of this edition, is akin to the 9.7 that Colombia got in 1993.. So Mona made quite an impact on them.....and I believe that carry on over to the semi-finals as I did not believe she was the strongest performer overall. In the semi-finals Colombia gave the best interview which also boosted her scores in the swimsuit and evening gown rounds as I thought Bolivia was the best in the former and Chile was the best in the latter. And in the end, Miss USA's eloquence elevated her 6th place position to first runner-up placement. Very telling that the final three, Norway, Colombia, and USA were very strong in interview and Q&A.

Miss Universe 1990 was a funny year for me. There was really no clear favourite that year, especially after Venezuela was eliminated in the top 10. USA was more polished but I feel like she was lacking a certain energy or something. Norway looked sort of plain when she won but looked gorgeous when she came back to crown her successor. She looked much better blonde with longer hair.
