Elecrow sent me a CrowPi2 to review in this unboxing video; I originally planned on a full review by now, but my recent hospitalizations have delayed my plans quite a bit, so subscribe so you don't miss my full review later!
You can buy the CrowPi2 on Amazon:
- Basic Kit (no Pi included): amzn.to/3Aa2UIC
- Advanced Kit (Pi 4 + accessories): amzn.to/3dilB3h
- Deluxe Kit (w/ extra sensors): amzn.to/3qyoIJy
Also, sorry about the audio quality-I never hit the 'record' button on my Lavaliere mic recorder... so you're hearing the cheap mic on my camcorder instead :)

Yes, though after finishing recording this video I had to take a nap! Probably need to keep working on recovery and keep the pace of new content and work down a bit this week...

I'm glad you're out of the hospital Jeff. I have only recently gotten interested in the Raspberry Pi when they introduced the model 4 - now I have three of them (3/4 pi?). They do well for us as a general purpose desktop and for me medium weight Linux softare development platform for Python and Julia. The prototyping laptop you unboxed really got my attention. I look forward to your review. Take care and stay well.

Great video Small question: which camera do you use shooting the computer?

It's a Canon Vixia HF R800; nice little cheap camera that is light enough to fit on smaller mounts.

I never actually got the chance to do a second video on it, but basically I like the concept, but the CrowPi is a bit larger than I'd like, and the fact that it requires external power (through a battery bank or wall) also makes it less ideal for quick setup/teardown with my kids. The software side was okay, but I think if Elecrow could spend a bit more time making integrated videos/tutorials for each of their projects that are all built into the device itself, it would be a lot more valuable for teaching kids about the various sensors. Still worth it if you want a nice platform for learning about a lot of different Pi-integrated circuits, but the overall build quality and slight clumsiness with the keyboard charging and power make it maybe 3-4 stars out of 5 in my experience.

@jeffgeerling Nice introduction to this. Because these are not yet generally available, yours is 1 of about 4 videos total, in the last month on this topic. There may be a lot of interest in more in-depth follow-ups.

I'm definitely going to do some follow-ups, I just have been under a bit of pressure on some other projects, which has put much of my KZbin work on hold lately :) - but stay tuned!

There's been ARM-based Windows laptops for all of 2020, and I think the first Pinebook (Linux) was late 2017.

1:58 Oh my, the person in that promotional video just read the broken English as-is, how did this not get corrected? Also, is it STEM or STEAM? STEM makes more sense but the box itself says STEAM, which makes no sense! They really need to hire a competent translator - someone who studied languages in University to be a translator - to redo their translations. Machine translation should NOT be relied upon for actual professional work!

STEAM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math I prefer STEM, but apparently the artist were feeling left out, so the name was changed.

This device make you lazy. And using a simulator is better than this device. The actual feeling is building prototype in breadboard.
@JeffGeerling
@JeffGeerling 3 жыл бұрын
I'd argue it's more convenient to have one of these for general learning (and note that it does have a small breakout/breadboard on the left bottom), and lazy can be good-if I'm lazy but I finally spend the time programming for one of these sensors that I have a bag of in a drawer somewhere because it's already wired up in the CrowPi2, I'd count that as a win! But we'll see. I'm going to spend some time with it in the next couple weeks and see how things go.

Disagree. Accomplishment is a very important feedback mechanism, especially in children or "busy" adults. Your comment reminds me how some micro designers called (and still call) the Arduino "lazy", because of all the things it does "for you", including not knowing how to breadboard or needing to learn soldering. For most people, they will not feel that first reward until they've done enough work to obtain a visible result: cause and effect. The more you can reduce the scope of "cause", the sooner they get an effect, and motivation.
