CORRECTIONS and CLARIFICATIONS:- 26:50 Listen carefully to this segment before you comment, people seem to be putting words in my mouth. All I do is acknowledge some may find Crash insensitive while also locating it in the context of the time and the project's goals. I say there's a discussion to be had there, and that this video isn't the place for that discussion. I'm not saying anybody is offended; I'm not speaking for anybody else. 59:49 You would think I'd've noticed that Wumpa in the air there with all the times I viewed that footage while editing, but apparently not. This obvious clue completely changes my outlook on the whole thing, as you probably don't have to finish Road to Nowhere 100% first.

nowadays I feel like crash is ironically the least edgy of the lot. He comes off endearing and frightened most of the time and acts more like a nervous animal in a skinners box than the rad 90s mohawk character you see on the cover art.
@MrMister6813 жыл бұрын
Even though it was conceived as an "edgy sonic", it felt more like they were making a more relatable, fuck-up character, and the edgy aspects were just in the character's design and marketing.
@briankelly1302 жыл бұрын
I never viewed him as edgy to be honest. I mean, compared to Spyro, Ratchet, Daxter and the rest, he just felt the least developed in that regard. Even in It's About Time, everyone gets an update to their personality while Crash just remains as he did.
@SuperHamachiBrother19 ай бұрын
It's mostly a matter of context. When Crash feels like he has control of the situation, his confidence shows and he's excited for the challenge. When he's overwhelmed by the danger, he starts to get nervous and the adrenaline kicks in for him to fight his fear. In beetween that, he's cautious and observing his surroundings. Like any good adventurer should be doing. Crash's edge mostly came from him being a playful, somewhat mischievous daredevil. Stuff like riding wild animals to carry him through levels, riding jetboards and motorcycles, flying jetpacks, and shooting giant fruit bazookas. Doing it with a wild, unrefined style that conveyed a sense of energy and confidence to make him inspirational without being invincible. He's sitll an underdog, after all. It's definitely more whimsical edge than Sonic's hardcore edge to fit Crash's more playful personality, but it was definitely there.
@trungussАй бұрын
@@briankelly130 I'd argue in Crash 4 and NST, the paranoia part of Crash's personality is lost.
@Ryan-hv3kn3 жыл бұрын
Actually the reason that the bridge levels play so badly on the remakes is because the hitbox model for crash is an oval instead of a rectangle, not because of smoother controls. Crash just slips off edges easier now.

When I heard you were making a video about Crash Bandicoot, I decided I should finally get around to playing that game so your video wouldn't spoil any of the secrets. When I read through the manual, there was a particularly curious bit that's stuck in my mind ever since. "This may get a bit confusing because the button controls don't change when his position does. So you may have to re-think a couple moves on the fly, or the next thing you know, you're flattened by a rolling boulder. Just remember, push Right when you want him to move to your right (no matter which way he's facing) and so on with the other direction buttons." That's a lot of words just to say "this game doesn't have tank controls," isn't it? The remark about how "this may get confusing" is so fascinating to me, because it seems so obvious! "Why would a platformer control any other way?" I scream. It's moments like these that really make me aware how much I take 3D for granted. For a brief time, they pretty much had to figure this stuff out from scratch, and I think it's a wild accomplishment that some of these games are still as enjoyable as they are today.

Your commentary on Road to Nowhere is spot on for me because I used to speedrun Crash 1 Nsane Trilogy, and even though I used the joystick for much of the game to smooth out movement, I actually switched to DPad for Road to Nowhere and High Road because it was easier to make specific granular movements and also keep running forward as fast as possible.

5:40 You make a good point how that Crash being less self serious than Sonic. As well as Sonic having a series identity crisis. For all their faults, the developers of the later games knew that humour was a strong series trait & never skipped a beat. Crash 4 tried having some dramatic story telling with Tawna.... It did not work out.
@MrMister6813 жыл бұрын
I don't think it was inherently a bad idea, they just didn't develop it. Twinsanity has glimpses of this with Cortex and I think it works very well.

@@MrMister681 Cortex worked in Twinsanity because he had some time to develop & he was such a ham. Plus, the story also didn't take itself too seriously. Pretty good video, but it's always surprising to me that people never point out in these analayses how genius it is to use crates as both things to get collectibles from (like the blocks in Mario or montiors in Sonic), platforms that break in contact and COLLECTIBLES THEMSELVES. I don't think I've ever seen a game do all that before or since the Crash games. You touch slightly on Crash's character, but I don't think it's said enough about how that different approach compared to other mascots, put him the closest to Mario and Sonic, at least in the 90s. I think Crash is more relatable compared to those two, who have more control of their situations, in later games especially, with Mario having lots of fun going "wahoo!" while he displays incredible feats of athleticism, and Sonic, styling through the levels in seconds while doing tricks (if the player can master his abilities and the levels). Meanwhile, Crash's movement is more limited, he has to be precise, has this worried look in his running and idle animation and wipes his sweat after finishing a level if he died. When he dies, mostly in 2 and 3, he gets humilliated, for the player to laugh at him (4 didn't get this right, deaths are kinda brutal). Even after finishing a level, all the crates you missed fall on his head, the suffering never ends, but that's why it's compelling to see him win. Also, that the game is funny, that adds a lot of personality to the series too. I think those things are why this series wasn't forgotten, and why it sticks so much in people's minds, compared to others that just kinda copied Mario and Sonic's approach.

I've been a big Crash fan pretty much since I was a kid so I actually appreciate someone taking a look at these games from the perspective of reccommending them to an outsider. I personally prefer Crash 2 so it'll be very interesting to hear your thoughts on that. I think that game improves on Crash 1 with such bullet point precision. I appreciate you at least acknowledging the colonial aesthetic Crash 1's Natives had. It does make Crash 1 a little awkward now that I'm an adult with an actual brain. At least Crash 2 doesn't really have Natives in a negative light. Also Papu Papu got screwed over so bad in Crash 1. He isn't even working for Dr Cortex or anything, dude was just chillin in his house until some random orange teenage mutant rat broke in and beat the shit out of him

Castle Machinery segment: This is honestly the best argument for a Life system I've ever heard... and yet it's not quite good enough. Crash 4 shows why quite nicely. Gold Wumpa means the number is still going up, it has relevancy to your quest by contributing towards Gems (and filling a meter), and the "relief of tension"is still felt by reaching the next checkpoint (unless you're going for Perfect Relics, in which case you're doing a deathless run anyway). Heck, in _this_ game lives are rather meaningless for completionists, because the Gems require the same sort of deathless runs!

High Road segment: There's actually another hint towards the secret platforms: the airborne Wumpa. Just as the other level had enemies in what would otherwise be a bottomless pit, so too is that Wumpa in a space that makes no sense without a platform. You've actually run into that particular hint a few times before High Road, such as when you were complimenting the hard/soft contrast in sounds between crate crashing and Wumpa collecting... but I guess it was so natural you didn't even notice... at least until a much later instance of it.
