Balan Wonderworld is a game that I have zero interest in ever playing, but I could watch/listen to people talk about it forever. It's such a fascinating. . . thing. And it's great to hear someone have a more positive analysis of it for a change.

I think a big reason why many misinterpret some games such as this is due to a lack of immersion. The more immersed you are, the less likely you are to study every last detail to make sure it is all sound. Balan is known to frustrate some players, and so they check out. You can see the reverse of this in Sonic Adventure 2, which has an absolutely insane story, but the gameplay and such retains player attention (if you like the game, at least), and so they go along with everything On the side, I believe SomeCallMeJohnny made the chess player comment. Love his content, love yours too!

Another thing is that the costumes could probably have been worked upon to reflect the person a little more while maintaining both utility and design through the stage, one of the greatest examples for that being Kirby (whose concept is probably what inspired Balan's game). He has many cool abilities that can influence the stage, either fighting against them or reusing it for a different need, besides a really cool look for the character.

Do you know what I think would have been better art style? If they had leaned harder into the musical theater aspect. Instead of it being a dream-like disjointed crazy oversaturated nonsense land, they should have leaned into it. Have the skybox be a stage. Have the jump literally be them being hoisted up on a harness. Have the envirnoment be obviously handmade with papercraft and burlap. Have characters in all black against the background moving stuff. Have particle effects be streamers, confetti, cloth and shit. Lean way harder in.

I've only watched reviews of this game, and each time I do keep forgetting the game is supposed to be set within theatres and dreams and I wouldn't be surprised if the people reviewing it would often forget that too, at least the ones I've seen since some sources are hardly worth paying any attention to anyway **coughIGNcough.** ..It's not very theatre themed, or even dream-like, it does at a glance look like one of those crappy, low budget, zero effort asset flips that you'd regularly see plaguing the Steam store, and I think one of the problems is that seeing those so commonly nowadays makes it so easy to brush moderately flawed games like Balan Wonderworld amongst the piles of objectively garbage games like The Slaughtering Grounds. There's so many of them that our brains kinda filter them out for us, there's plenty of other games that are perhaps almost as flawed as Balan that I'd have normally never given the light of day if not already exposed to them by someone else, simply because they looked or played a little weird or janky on top of there just being so many to choose from, but are otherwise quite fun. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the market is beyond oversaturated and far too many decent games are trashed or overlooked entirely because we throw them all into piles while on autopilot. I still wouldn't count Balan as decent or even average, but I'm not sure it deserved the absolute beating it'd gotten either, it'd just gotten a bunch of quick, half-assed reviews then thrown into the "bad" pile to move onto something else.

It shouldn't need to be screamed in your face to understand this basic concept or at least to just go with the flow. After a point the over communication of its intent can just be a disruption to the experience. This seems less a problem with the game and more the problem of an audience that refuses to embrace simple abstraction and needs everything spoonfed to the point of absurd literalism. Especially in Balan Wonderworld's case, where it isn't a literal physical stage play, it's a dream world that uses stage play more as a metaphor.
@cantrip7
@cantrip7 2 жыл бұрын
@@GreatLange The problem of shooting for dreamlike: game environments are already abstract and surreal. Environments in Balan aren't significantly more dreamlike and impossible than in Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie, aside from the wrapping effect. Actually, with much of the game constructed from conspicuous level-editor-blocks, I was hardly pulled into the magic circle. Without pushing the visuals in one direction, most stages in Balan end up generic and video-gamey (and not in an exaggerated and sublime way). So yeah, I think the game could benefit from "spoonfeeding" the audience a visual gimmick. Reminder: this is an all-ages game aiming for a broad audience.

This is gonna sound weird but I think the existence of the book negatively affected the perception of the game. Like you said, the "Weird Dream Theatre" vibe is not hard to pick up on. The game spells it out relatively well. But there's also a book which adds dialogue and explains the plot, and now suddenly it looks less like "Balan Wonderworld's story is simple but apparent and conveyed through the gameplay and cutscenes" and more like "Balan Wonderworld's entire plot was dumped into a separate release that also costs money and is in a completely different medium and the game looks completely off-the-wall unless you buy and read the book." The presence of an external source that adds way more to the game's plot just makes what _is_ in the game look undercooked, and makes people ask "Why the fuck is this in a book and not the game itself?" On the plus side, at least now we now why SA2 put everything on B.

Hey Shay, I don't know whether you read the comments, but I just wanted to share my appreciation for your approach to games criticism. It's uniquely positive and constructive in a sphere where people are usually cynical, and the genuine appreciation you seem to have for the good aspects of certain games that you recognize are bad and flawed is ultra refreshing. I love many the work of many games' critics, but I think you're the only one I know of who would make a video with this sort of tone about a game like Balan, and I think that's very valuable. It's fine and even important to criticize bad games to learn what not to do when designing a game, but the way you also look at all the ways it succeeds just isn't something you see that often. Your work (especially for the past year or so) has been a pleasure to watch and I just wanted to say thanks.

Kirby's Adventure seems to be a good example of what Balan Wonderworld is trying to be. It has a simplified control scheme and costume abilities that all do exactly one thing. There are costumes dedicated to movement (Wheel, Hi-Jump), combat (Sword, Fire), and puzzles (Rock, Laser). There are special secret abilities that reward the player with powerful abilities (UFO, Crash), abilites that are better versions of ones you've already seen (Hammer does all the good things Rock and Sword can do), and there's even the useless costume that lights up a single dark room. Taking damage also causes you to lose your ability in Kirby's Adventure, but no one complains because regaining the ability or getting a new one is very snappy. The key difference seems to be the number of costumes and the base abilites. There's about 20 copy abilities in Kirby's Adventure, which allows almost all of them to have multiple associated puzzles that ramp up in difficulty, and the only ones that don't are either the secret abilities or the Light one. Kirby also has a standard movement set that is almost never taken away from the player (Ball and UFO being the exceptions). I think Balan would have benefitted greatly from cutting away most, but not all, of the overlap costumes and the ones with incredibly limited utility. Balan had a lot going for it in the charm and style department, so it really is a shame that the volume of costumes prevents any one costume from getting much attention. I've no idea why the designers felt the need to put in so many abilities, but given Naka's open admission that the story was mandated by Square, I'm willing to blame an executive mandate for "a big number we can put on the box."
@megasoniczxx
@megasoniczxx 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Personally speaking, the one thing that killed the game for me was how slow the process of switching costumes to perform different actions was and that not all of the costumes can jump (which might only been an issue for me because of the former issue). I think if it had been designed with costume switching just being this fast and seamless thing that doesn't halt your movement, it would've made all the difference in the world in how playable it was. Otherwise, I think there's a lot to like about this game outside of the gameplay. The visuals are nice, the music is pretty mellow and soothing to listen to and the overall message it tells is a good one.

i agree with star on this one, it wasn't the "story bits" or the symbolism that was BW's real problem, it was the trip up that was the gameplay, as star said, this game felt like "kirby but" however didn't fully "get it" sort to speak, i'm willing to bet the game would be so much better if they didn't limit the controls so badly (if all costumes can do some sort of action AND jump, i'm sure there would be MUCH less bitching about the game) also i'm not counting the glitches/laggy bits/slog of random things that could be fixed with patches but every game nowadays had that issue lol the dancing numbers were still weird as hell tho

How would Sony mandate core game mechanics..? Unless I'm mistaken the story (aka the cutscenes made by a different company) was mandated because testers had no idea what was going on, so it's not like Sony pushed it on them out of nowhere.
@ParadigmRiki

@@PointsofData I think what they mean by the executive mandate comment is that it might be the higher ups that made it so they had to make so many repeat and useless costumes so they could slap the whole "We have over 80 costumes!" on the box; and not that the execs told Naka to do the costume thing as a whole. Keep in mind, this is all speculation, we don't really know the full story behind the scenes.

1:23:57 ok, this one is at least understandable. He did hit the floor 15 times and the boss took damage. When you play a lot of action games like Alpharad does, one thing becomes fairly clear: If you do something that touches the boss, the boss stops moving and seems to flinch, and it makes a loud impact sound, you're going to get the impression that you're successfully damaging it. Even looking at that clip, the hit that actually works is barely different than the ones that didn't. He moved like half the length of one of those tiles, which is about 1/32 around the circle, and even then still wasn't really at the opposite end, certainly not further enough over to figure out the difference. An example of this being done better is with the Bowser fight in Mario Odyssey. When hitting Bowser isn't going to launch him into the wall, he very explicitly starts blocking with his arms, and a giant shield barrier appears in front of him, signalling that his guard is up and he's going to retaliate on that hit. You want to fix that boss to be easier to understand? Have the boss float higher, and have the ground pound tilt the stage more. That way, it'd be a lot more clear that the reason you didn't deal damage is because the floor will tilt in the wrong spot and the part under the boss won't go high enough to hit it. That way, it's unambiguous that the reason you failed to damage it, is because you missed.

Understandable, MAYBE, but still a very stupid criticism to make. One *slightly valid if you squint and give him way too much credit* criticism of ONE boss within a sea of overreactionary bullshit comes off like he was looking for little tiny issues to whine about like a little piss baby lol

I honestly can't bring myself to blame Naka for the failings of Balan Wonderworld -perhaps I could with Ohshima and Artoon/Arzest as their track record gets a bit iffier there- I think the blame falls squarely (no pun intended) on the publisher Square Enix, who in the last couple of years seems to have published projects that at first seemed like slam dunks, but somehow end up being massive duds, like a black hole for talent (makes you wonder if there isn't a sort of "The Producers" scheme going on): - The Quiet Man, a "challenging" narrative about a deaf man by the studio behind Prey 2006, *critical and commercial failure* - Left Alive, a spinoff the the forgotten Front Mission series with art by Yoji Shinkawa, mechs designed by Xenoblade Chronicles X's artists and the producer from the Armored Core series as the director, *critical and commercial failure* - Marvel's Avengers, a tie-in game to the popular IP by the Tomb Raider team, *critical and commercial failure* - Balan Wonderworld, a new big-budget 3D platformer from the creators of Sonic, *critical and commercial failure* - Babylon's Fall, a co-op action game by PlatinumGames and the producer of NieR:Automata, *_next in the road to failure_* *(Update:* Confirmed flop) In fact, Naka was fully aware that even by halving the costumes to 40 it would be hard to make each one worthwhile, *but thanks to Square Enix they were able to push it to 80 in the end* *EDIT:* Yep, Naka confirmed SQEX screwed him over and released the game incomplete.

Although I understand that the musical numbers make sense in a theater setting, I think any value they have is undercut by the on-the-surface ridiculousness of the whole thing. The uncanny dance animations, with those dead eyes. The nonsense lyrics. It's just so immediately silly that any deeper meaning behind it is totally lost.
@Scienceboy0
@Scienceboy0 2 жыл бұрын
Part of the problem is that there is no deeper meaning. It's a very shallow feeling of joy and overcoming generic hardship every time. If the silliness was removed, and it was animated better, you would still be left with a dance number that doesn't serve to say anything about the character other than basic joy and relief. The dance numbers would have to be more complicated and symbolic to show anything more than that.

Box Fox is your friend going "there's something on your shirt" and then flicking your chin. Your friend chuckles, you derive a minuscule amount of enjoyment from it, and the two of you move on without ever thinking about this moment again. If there are people who played the game and didn't get the joke, I don't blame them, the game didn't try hard enough.

I have no idea itf it's intentional but when you mentioned that if you lose the costume you're supposed to use, it's probably worth improvising another solution, that seems to fit in with the theatre premise as well. If someone misses a cue, or flubs a line irrecoverably, on stage you just need to run with it, have such a good idea of your character you can improve a way to get back on track. The show must go on.

I played the game to completion. I got all the statues and even built up the Tower of Tims. The only thing I never did was get a crowned Tim and get the secret costume, because I played the game before anyone online had understood how to do it. I enjoyed the game for the most part. The free-form inventive platforming that becomes possible with Frost Fairy was absolutely my favourite aspect of the gameplay, and I loved the visual design atmosphere, even if the level design itself is rather bland for the most part. I think the one-button control scheme is really really awkward though. It makes the jumpless costumes feel really sad and restrictive, and I don't think it's worth it for the few moments where being jumpless could be considered "interesting". I found myself utilising the free invincibility from costume-switching all over the place to brute-force obstacles and boss fights too, which maybe removed a lot of interesting gameplay. The Balan Bouts are just indefensible and honestly killed the enjoyment of getting all statues. I'm really happy to see this video. It's a very fair look at the game.

The obvious exaggeration about how bad the game is has made me almost curious enough to play it. It's one of those situations where you could just look at the game and look at most of the criticisms and see that it's obviously just people being over the top for clicks. Your video and Transparency's video has more or less cured me of wanting to try it but I mean that in a good way - I can appreciate it from a distance without experiencing it myself. I think the rampant malicious exaggeration of the game highlights a growing problem with discourse about games that are deemed acceptable targets. How often have you heard that a game "looks like a PS2 game", for example? I remember people saying that about WatchDogs when it came out because of the bullshots controversy and, no, it doesn't look like a PS2 game, not even close. Folks will iterally just say anything about a game nowadays. Those same people want games to be art so their interest isn't considered to be for manchildren but they don't want to engage with games in good faith on its own terms and will go out of their way to bully a children's game. I haven't played Balan, I don't want to play it, but it makes me mad to see something that somebody put some genuine thought and effort into get trashed because some KZbinrs gotta make a "worst game of 20XX" list and I think it's discouraging aspiring indie gamers from putting their work out there.

"Imagine a completely different game where you can only carry one costume at a time" It's not too hard to imagine since space station silicon valley exists. It made me know that a one button gameplay system could work really well too the levels just need to be designed with all of the abilities you can get in mind.

One question I have in regards to the appearance of background characters in scenes: Why does the painter always view the crowd as board game piece abstractions while the old man who was being ignored always views them as detailed people? They're both seeking validation from a large group rather than individuals but the presentation doesn't reflect that in the same way as the bug girl's change like you mentioned. Another thing: Why is killing yourself on purpose to get back to a checkpoint too gamey, but exiting a level, getting a good costume from an old one, and reentering the level at a checkpoint also not an exploitation of its video game nature? These are meant to be legitimate questions, not "gotchas" or anything. I feel like my opinion after playing the game was very close to yours, I would have loved all the presentation choices and the worlds if you could inherently explore them with those few good costumes that open up their design. It felt like I dreaded each new introduced costume since it came with that risk I'd have to swap out one of the good ones I've been trying to hold onto for those prescriptive ones. I did enjoy moments like embracing Frost Fairy's flexibility and people definitely overstate the issues with the game. Not even close to the worst game of the year, but I suppose disappointment in something promising stings more than something that looks awful and plays awful.

Gotta say, you made a good one here. I was one of the many people who saw the negative reviews about the game and just assumed it was Mighty No. 9 all over again, and just about every video about this game reinforced that assumption. I won't say your video convinced me it's a hidden gem--like you said, some people will click with and some won't, and it just doesn't grab me--but you helped me appreciate the things it does right (and even some of what it does wrong). So, thanks for providing an actually nuanced view of this game. Though now I'm kinda sad that we'll likely never see a sequel. There's a lot that needs to be ironed out, but another game could bring out some of the lost potential. Oh, well. Also, you forgot to mention the Balan Wonderworld official light novel that somehow actually exists.

Man, what a great video! I'm sure I'm not alone in having watched this video without playing this game, but I was thoroughly entertained. Not to stroke ShayMay's ego too much, but it takes some seriously good writing to keep an audience engaged for this long when I hadnt played the game. The insights offered are clear and interesting even without ever having held the controller. Plus, all the jokes littered throughout the video got me to laugh out loud over and over. Loved this video.

I think that the difficulty with arguments like "boxfox was obviously a joke" or "breaking levels is obviously the point" is that they require a player to have some level of faith in the game already. Even though I'd agree with those statements, I think that players were 'missing the point' because the game was so unreliable and gave such a poor first impression. While watching others play the game, I watched multiple people accidentally walk off the gap directly following the upwards slope just past the boxfox location - missing the jump not because they mistimed it but because they didn't see the gap due to the camera's default angle and the color of the ground. It's difficult to see the comedy and playfulness in falling off the ledge as boxfox when it's directly next to a place where you can fall off the ledge in a way that feels unsatisfying and punishing. I think there are some good (or at least interesting lol) elements in this game, but with all the weird choices I can totally get why people would assume those elements are mistakes or oversights. At least this game is bad for interesting reasons, though. I love seeing discussions about it.

I feel the reason a lot of the confusion the internet had comes from how weirdly around the corner and obtuse the game is as well as just kinda how bad it feels to play. Game has the issue of dealing with the negativity spiral of being put under a magnifying glass since its not really that nice to play and because of how it presents itself it's both very obvious but also very "throws you in head first" and doesnt let the player really get their barrings on whats even going on. if the game say had the cutscenes of what happened to these people before the levels for example people would PROBABLY be able to grasp what's going on more quickly. Because, it doesnt establish stuff like that, it leads to people being confused on who this giant farmer guy is for example and makes them miss on more obvious stuff. Even if the stuff like it being non-literal is obvious in a lotta ways because many players are already kinda lagging behind with trying to figure things out that kinda just compounds the issue and on top of most people finding the game to just feel bad to play it leaves them just generally confused because they never really got a chance to actually get their barring on the situation. By the time you see what the entire situation is with the cutscene most players might have already forgot/stopped thinking about a lot of the more subtle hints and references alluding to this outside of the most basic and obvious themes of the level because they were dealing with a game they didnt like the feel of and they didnt know a lot of the more subtle things might relate to anything at all. Because of how bad the impression and confusion for the first stage kinda causes and because of how round about things like scenario information is to a lot of people it leads to that negativity spiral issue. Like for example I doubt many people even thought about the tornado wolf somehow tieing into the whole tornado troubles the guy had mentally. Given by the time anyone even really learns what the plot is with the cornfield tornado, they've probably ALREADY forgotten that powerup or at the very least forgot its name and arent really thinking about what it's really even doing since they've become so accustomed to it and because the player was kind of accustomed to just not thinking about that stuff since they were never given any set up to even think about til a bossfight they need to focus on happened. Same for example the posters in the opening of the characters you meet later. The game doesnt focus on it for long enough that you'll remember this one bit by the time you actually get to those characters, so by the time you even get to just the farmer you're not even going to be thinking about that scene. And that's compounded by all the issues people have with the gameplay and kinda how awkward a lot of stuff can kinda come off, ESPECIALLY when you're figuring stuff out still. Like the game makes stuff "obvious" but for a lot of people the game doesnt make it apparent there even is anything obvious to pay attention to until you've kinda already forgotten to think about it I find. At least I see it that way at least. Its obvious with what its showing and saying but not upfront with what any of that means until a lot of people already kinda forgot about that stuff because they didnt think it'd be important. For as obtuse as nights into dreams was, it was obtuse but kinda to the point with what's kinda going on. Imo that made it actually more approachable for as absurd and out there as it was vs Balan.

i like the section at 26:00 a lot. i like that kind of thing in a lot of other games too, and it feels really alienating when i see other people get so angry and frustrated at this sort of thing. it's weird that people get so mad at being the butt of a harmless joke as to miss the comedy entirely and mistake it for malice or just "bad" design. it seems like such a self centered way to look at the game they're playing. like, god forbid the waiter cracks a joke when he brings your food. what an asshole, wasting the diner's time for something that wasn't even funny anyways. who does he think he is?

I feel it might be worth mentioning: This game came with a book! Well, by which I mean a book was released alongside it, you have to buy it separately, but if you ever wanted Balan Deep Lore, it exists, and explains some finer details like why everyone does a lovely (?) dance at the end of the stages (The main boy character likes to dance - no really, that's the answer) and what the hell's going on in a more general sense (Everyone's trapped in a dream world of Lance's creation, that Lance made to help people get over their problems and such, but unfortunately Lance went bonkers at some point and decided the best way to solve things was to trap people forever, but thankfully Lance created Balan (I think?) pre-going-bonkers as some sort of fail safe and Balan is trying to overthrow Lance so that everyone can get out of the dream world.) Also: Ba[lan]+[Lan]ce = Balance. I feel like that was intentional, ties to the overarching thing in some way, you know? Like, getting away from your problems for a bit in fantasy land absolutely helps, but you have to balance that out with, like, actually solving them, dontcha.

Great video, Shay! It's always exciting when I see a new video of yours pop up! I'm a bit disappointed when you said "Then it got its head kicked off" at the beginning of the video when you could've said "its hat kicked off" hehe All in all, this was a really interesting perspective on Balan, one that illuminated a seemingly more fair look onto the game, illuminating the genuinely interesting and positive points about the game without disregarding the real problems with them. It has been exhausting dealing with all the CinemaSins-esque type of reviews that we've been getting in regards to media nowadays, and so taking a fair and honest look at these types of media that have been persecuted by public opinion is a breath of fresh air

The only other review I saw of this was LSMark's and he wasn't too harsh on it either I think, but it's been a while since I saw it lol. It really seems like whoever made this game needed people who could say no to certain ideas and let other ideas be developed more. Dunno why they thought 80 costumes is a good idea except to say "we have 80 costumes and moves!" in marketing or whatever xD

When I was first watching someone playing the demo and I saw the curved level I thought it was incredibly cool, and was rememimded of Mario Galaxy. Then the level moved and flattened out and I though I wouldn’t be able to play the game wether it was good or bad. Because the mechanic was introduced so early, I immediately assumed that it would be a constant in the game. It incredible how much of a bad idea that was. It’s also unforgivable in a platformer where you’re high of the ground. Things like shadows and geometrically recognizable terrain are needed to help with the players 3d perspective already. Making the visual distance difficult to judge by visually altering it just doesn’t seem fair. It’s a cool brain games prank, but yikes.

Really neat video. I know a guy who's CONSTANTLY shilling for Balan, to the point where he's hitched his self-esteem to the public reception it got (he's not in a good place, needless to say). And I gotta say, after using your Nights into Dreams video as something of a guide to understanding Nights when I recently gave it a go, your meager thumbs up for Balan makes me more compelled to check it out someday than ANY of said friend's shilling for it. Also, you didn't touch upon it, so I have to guess: I've heard the final cutscene has a lot of dialogue, but all in the gibberish Balan language. Should I assume that, just like the musical numbers, that gets subtitled after you reach it a second time?
@AleT118
@AleT118 2 жыл бұрын
No, but I don't think you need that dialogue to be understandable to comprehend it's meaning. It's not something you must find out to understand the game, but the Novel has a certain line in it that may be a translation of that in-game line.

Regarding the comments about how there's some really good ideas and visuals amid all the big gripes about gameplay: If anything, that's Worse, in my eyes. If something's shit through and through, then who cares? Discard it, move on. But wasted potential in media? That Really hurts. Because we're almost certainly not going to get a Balan 2 where the gameplay's received some heavy polish and the fun colorful characters and worlds get to really shine. The idea is Poisoned, now. Who knows, maybe we'll get lucky, and they'll pull a Suicide Squad, and make a really decent second chance. But the fact I can describe that as "Pulling a Suicide Squad" should probably convey how infrequently that happens: I can literally only think of one mainstream example.
