Im a truck driver and i never got in a situation like this...its not funny its sad to watch..this has nothing to do with being a new driver its just common sense and you need to have a very good estimate where can your truck fit and where it cant...i would understand maybe if he was behind the wheel of that truck for the first time but otherwise i really dont because you have those situtations in the driving practice for your licence...if your cab fits trough doesnt mean that your trailer will...some people should just stick to driving smaller trucks and if that is too much maybe a van...if you see the spot is tight and you might not make it rather turn on hazards for 1 min to get out and check the situation before you go into it and hold up traffic for 1 minute than going into it and clinching your ashole and pray that you make it...assumption is the mother of all fuckups...btw sorry for my bad english not my mother language

I'm not trying to be overly sensitive but my heart broke for this guy. I made plenty of mistakes driving trucks when I first started. And sometimes you WILL get bad directions from a shipper/receiver no matter how careful you are. I've been sent to places that no longer existed because they failed to update directions. Even their phone number was invalid. I still drive trucks but I thank God every day that I have a round trip route now. I am familiar with the roads and it makes a world of difference. You pros out there can have all that OTR stuff (no offense). I'm just not cut out for having my nerves wrecked. I respect all of you who go out there and do it everyday. Be safe.

Brittany Farrier it's not only the drivers fault for being there. Not enough training to be in the city like that. Do not blindly follow GPS. Not even truck GPS, which is often wrong. GPS and atlas are only tools. They can be helpful, but can't rely on them 100%. Need to also use your own eyes and brain to figure it out. And for navigating city streets, need to pull out your computer and get truck routing from that city's website. New York city has some very good maps available, both online and paper (that they'll mail for free). Need to do your homework before going into cities. That having been said, companies are to fault here too. OTR truckers have to drive all over America, and it's asking a lot to expect them to do all of that research for so many deliveries, on top of everything else they have to do. And low wages to boot. What trucking companies should do for places like NYC and Chicago is have local drivers in day cabs do the pickups and deliveries, then hand it off to OTR drivers at drop yards to do the long distance. The local drivers can have knowledge of the streets and how to get to each customer, and a day cab is easier to maneuver in tight spots. And the companies should provide maps for local streets, too. They send hundreds of trucks to a lot of these places every year, but it would take just one person a few hours to create a map for how to navigate the complex maze of streets to get there safely and legally. They do nothing but provide a street address, and sometimes even that is wrong (e.g., the office address rather than warehouse). And the street address isn't necessarily the delivery entrance, which might be on a different side of the property. And it might be crucial to be driving down the street a particular direction to be lined up for it. And truckers are just left to figure this stuff out on their own, driving blind into new locations. False economy.

I drove for CRST for a year or so. Dispatcher told me that only drivers who are on the shit list get sent to NYC. As far as GPS, I bought the Rand McNally truckers edition, set up for max dimensions and weight, and it would not keep me on truck routes all the time. Might not be the drivers fault for following it's directions. On the other hand, what driver would attempt such a tight turn? Not me.

it's a Camofloged Recycled Schneider Truck.. Everytime you are going to a place like that you have to call. Pull out the Rand McNally and make sure your not going into a low over pass and it's clear for commercial vehicles Height and length. A GPS doesn't know if there is construction and lanes shut down and trucks get routed and you have to have a good mind for learning how to get where you need to unconventionally. He needs to straighten out and let the fifth wheel back as far as possible. Slide the trailer tandems up as far as possible. Those two things will buy him a few more inches off the light pole. Need to pray someone moves the pick-up.

My "truck" GPS has gotten me into some areas where I shouldn't have been but was able to maneuver out without issue except one time it put me on a no truck route in Nebraska and a state trooper gave me a ticket although there were no other issues. My very first reluctant use of a truck GPS took me over 100 miles out of my way to destination through the mountains in PA. Always map your route against a gps route before proceeding. Thanks to the NYPD and fellows helping this driver.

I think the problem is that the greater NYC area (including Long Island, Northern NJ and CT) is the only area of the country (or the world for that matter) that has an entire network of these "Parkways" that disallow commercial vehicles due to low overpasses. I guess blame Robert Moses but you don't see these kinds of roads anywhere else. Most over the road truckers therefore have no idea what they are doing when they get to NYC.
