As a 40 year Fenestration contractor I agree the windows are the MOST important part of a quality home. Sadly not many people get this information when designing their home.

Every time you show the Williamsburg house I got excited. When I built my home I wanted as much of that look as I could afford. In Va. if you mention Williamsburg the price goes up. Builder wanted so bad to put in the "new" type windows in 1988. I insisted on historic style and wanted like you show here and 9 over 9. Best I could find was an M&W 6 over6 with "mutts" that were different than Williamsburg but the smallest point was 7/8 of an inch. Under the window I had them put a bull nose. Add to this roof pitch of 10x12 and 12x12 and there comes the beauty. Did have to use storms for protection. If building today I would want similar windows if I could find them. I have had more than one person stare at my house and when I ask what are you looking at? They say this house is beautiful. I reply, it is the windows and roof pitch. Loved the video.

Hi Brent, great video! Could you possibly do a small series of videos where you take a window from a particular time period and show us how to properly proportion the size of the wall opening (1 to 2, 1 to 3, 3 to 5, or the Golden Ratio, etc), then how to proportion the sash to the width of the frame, then the best proportions for the individual divided lights, and finally how to size the sill and casings (perhaps both externally and internally)? This would really give us a complete picture of how to design and install period windows (whether as an individual window or as a mulled unit). Thanks!

Another wonderful synopsis on traditional window design and how it works and matters. In modern design windows are supposed to be expansive and their size and position is NOT based so much on the exterior-but first on interior experience and function. Also, of course, most modern or “conventional” houses today are not designed to look like houses from the past, as viewed from the street, but to serve the needs of the occupant and budget of construction. So of course we get them “wrong.” Traditional windows appear to impose a contrived layout on plan-driven designs of efficient and modern spaces. Not arguing either way, but that’s part of the picture.

Instead of the front of the house having balanced windows what about if one side has shorter windows for a reason? Would it make sense to put trim or moldings to make the two windows look the same height? Charles
