The reason they aren't adding a multi-level hinge like that is for simplicity. I think the style they have will look great once they do the bodywork necessary. More complicated bodywork to make this work, for sure, but theres much less chance of a simple hinge failing in operation

I think the pop-up design you're going for looks good, and I see how the scallop will be deeper when it's going to be made out of metal. I'm not sure the nay-sayers understand what you're going for. The only thing I'm concerned about is the angle of the light being adjustable enough to be correct and not blinding other drivers at night since I'm not sure it goes low enough. Might need to test that out at ride height pointed at a wall like an inspection.

It should be right in theory, the headlight ends up in the exact same position as it is on the 993. So should be in tolerance for internal adjustment! We will definitely be testing however once the unit is functional and mounted. 👍🏻

I’ve seen a car at a car show the builder had the whole front hood area lift similar to what you are doing with lights. What he did was had a short arm attached between the hood and a longer arm attached to the top between the top of the hood. Maybe you could try it on your light. You will have to try different length the length arms.

The undercut at the bottom of the lamp's eyepiece, along with a fairly wide gap around the lamp itself, are air swirlers, that allow the lamp to rise at german motorway speeds. The gap allows air to blow around the lamp from below and "suck" it into the open position when the lights are turned on. You make lowered lights, "pop-down" not "pop-up", so the aerodynamic solution for this would be very complicated and the mechanisms themselves would have to be very indestructible. All pop-up lights have "aerodynamic lift" that allow them to open at high speeds. This does not apply to rotating lights like in Corvettes. I remember something about a car that has lowered lights, but I can't remember witch it was, but the solution was a lowering cover in the color of the bodywork inside the reflector that exposed the actual lamps.
@fernandoteles40804 ай бұрын
The project is yours, your choice. I would never be able to do something like you are doing... but... the pop up for me makes more sense to keep the car's line even in aluminum without visualizing the headlight and raising it at an angle.... that way it looks like eyes with a two-day hangover. but that's my view.

You know I just realised that you have the giant foil rear and I want to say to make a fibreglass rear clamshell but I’ll probably have a red dot following me after I say that (iyk,yk)because the main problem is fibreglass is really flammable, while aluminium is a lot heavier. And also, you already have the foil layer so aluminium rear clamshell would be nonsense. On top of that, the (I’d say second) biggest issue it that fibreglass is pretty hard to put down without a tightly packed together/gridded frame, but you have a whole layer to put the fibreglass on. Yeah ima have some angry engineers after me because of this comment. Eh too bad.

You could simplify this... have the headlights be , instead of pop ups or pop ins, more 1960's innovative... Have an oval sheet metal *patch* pop in, then out of the way to one side (or up or down) then have the headlight go straight forward into the opening, which feels a lot like something Porsche or an Italian 1960's exotic would have done.

The lower light is the original “high beam” for that 993 headlight. It’s very underpowered compared to the upgraded projector light we are installing at the top half of the light (which functions as both low and high beams) - pretty much rendering the lower part of the light unnecessary.

Am loving the car and cant wait to see it finished but I have to be honest and say I don't see the point of these pop ups, they move so little to seem pointless. I feel something like the 928s headlights would be more suitable to the car or failing that hinge them at the bottom and push the top out. Anyway your car your call and as I say can't wait to see it finished.
@robertpatrick33504 ай бұрын
The 928’s lights were the least appealing feature of the car. You need to start with different lights and make a section of the panel in front drop and the rear of your selected light pop up be rotating around an axis 1/3 of the way up the front face of the light.
@stevejames92214 ай бұрын
If the area of the sheet metal that you are trying to scallop was attached to the headlight instead of the car, then you wouldn’t need to be scalloped!

Honestly, I think you are going about the headlight completely wrong. You need a back to the light and a bucket for it to sit in. I’m not convinced by your pivot point and the clay serves no purpose when all you need is a scallop that you could have made in 5 minutes with some card! Have you looked at how other cars solved the problem - the Miata, the Miura?

@meszarosmate46294 ай бұрын
I am no engineer, but i really dont see why your lamps pivot at the middle, instead of the front. I am sorry, but to me, the light going under the hood just seems butch. If you simply moved the pivot point to the front then you wouldn't have this problem, you already cut down on the plastic behind the lamp, so it would have more than enough travel, even though a front pivot requires more upward travel on the backside of the lamp. Cars either have a back or a front pivot on pop up headlights as far as I know, to me it just seems like you guys are complicating this more than it should be. Copying work is all right, plenty of cars are out there with a pop up headlight, no need to reinvent the wheel.
I don't know why you guys still using that clay model, while you already have a cad design that you can print out in 3D! and the back of the car is too narrow.... it looks cramp!
