Sir Dr Sydney Hugo Nicholson MVO was a 20th century English organist, composer, and founder of the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM). He was organist at a number of famous chapels, including Carlisle and Manchester cathedrals, Eton College and Westminster Abby.
Notably, Nicholson founded the School of English Church Music, which later became the Royal School of Church Music, in 1927. His editorial contributions to the supplementary Hymns Ancient and Modern of 1916 left a significant mark on English sacred music, as well as this processional hymn 'Lift high the cross.'
