Politics of envy, as ever. Parents work hard to send children to private schools as well as paying tax towards the state sector. Not all schools have boarders & the % of overseas boarders varies tremendously. Many schools are small schools & do not have the income for adding 20% to the fees. It will also discriminate against those with special needs.

We have a long standing tradition that we don't tax education. So absolutely no, we should not be raising VAT on private school fees. And in any case Labour don't have a mandate for this policy. They have 35% share of the vote. Not 51%. About time we stopped this ridiculuous thing of allowing seats to dictate votes in the commons, rather than vote share at the election.

If you ever wondered why Britain is in this economic mess, these sort of policies is a good example. I already pay taxes and the government is meant to provide FREE school from the proceeds of my tax. The government has failed in its duty and i opted for private education which further helped the government by reducing the burden on public schools. Why on earth will you further tax me for bailing you out? Education is the government responsibility.

Many of them are able to send their children to the best state schools, some people don't have that option; my sons' went to a tiny independent school, I effectively paid to educate 4 children, my own 2 and the 2 spaces there would have been for my sons' in the local state school that they didn't take up. This policy stamps all over the efforts of some hard working parents who want to give their children more opportunities they had.

The biggest lie of this policy is that private schools don’t pay VAT they do they pay vat on all their consumables, building work etc which they can not reclaim. - last year private schools paid £5.1 billion in VAT which isn’t able to be reclaimed. They also saved the state £4.4 billion in education places not taken up in state schools. Once they charge vat they can reclaim it which by most estimates will be £600million - £1 billion a year!!
@user-il1zt8sp5g
@user-il1zt8sp5g Ай бұрын
@@johnkitching2248 the point is they currently can’t reclaim any vat expenses but once they charge it they will. So the treasury is currently +£5.1 billion (as anyone with a brain could figure out from my comment) Also in the first year they can reclaim any vat from building or maintenance works incurred from the last 10 years! Also once the start reclaiming vat the magical £1.6 billion Labour want to raise will quickly go down!!

Aaron you DO NOT have a clue on how big this picture actually is!! What about independent schools for children with special educational needs who couldn’t get an Educational Health and Care Plan, hence their parents have crippled themselves financially to simply be able to have their child in a school that can meet their needs instead of letting them rot in a mainstream school that dosent understand them! Let’s also remember they’ve had to do this because the state can’t provide it and so they have taken matters into their own hands because they love their kids!! Yes - some private families can afford the 20%, but what about those who are already at breaking point paying for fees because they had no choice but to send their kids privately because the state turned their back and the alternative of leaving them in the wrong school was unimaginable and they weren’t willing to do it! Yet again the middle men are punished by the lefty Labour Party 🤢

If you pay to privately educate your kids in the future, under a labour government if they get their way, you will have to pay VAT on School fees. So, what's the difference if you pay a university to obtain a degree you should be subject to VAT on the University fee’s. OK because some people will fall into the salary bracket whereby, they have to start paying university fees back in which case at that stage they could be reimbursed any VAT that was levied on the fee’s.

Imho I don’t think the figures quoted by both guests are not realistic 1. A large number of private schools will close and students will go into the state education system So no extra cash (vat) and extra places to provide and probably more buildings etc 2. The state system is far less efficient so will cost proportionally more to provide a worse education . Money would be better spent to provide more schools in deprived areas which are properly funded and thank the private schools for the money it saves them.

How about, if you are obsessed with doing it, put a lower rate of tax on to pay for what you need, not to pay for that and your other loony ideas. I for one don't believe it should be done (my kids are in state school and so was I). The people are already paying tax and then paying private.
