The Cruis'n IP actually belongs to Nintendo. They licensed (I guess you could say collabed) it out to Midway before they folded. Raw Thrills was founded on the remnants of the dev team. This is the reason why you could still see Nintendo's name on a modern arcade cabinet (outside of that Rhythm Heaven arcade game). I still have memories of Cruis'n World.

I looked into the arcade version a little bit, it is seemingly running fairly modest hardware (the only info given by Raw Thrills is the use of an Nvidia GTX 750 Ti) but looking at some direct capture footage it does look quite a bit different, as there were some very significant cuts made in the rendering. The arcade game seems to have a different lighting model, shadow maps are used under the cars and across the track, the water rendering is very different with a transparent surface, and planar reflections are deployed on a lot of surfaces including bodies of water and puddles. Still, making all of those cuts in order to have the game run at a full 1080p on the Switch might have been the right call.
@Soonjai3 жыл бұрын
I guess they can get away with more modest hardware because at that point they really only have to optimize for one set of Hardware and therefore can get more out of it, similar to consoles. Plus it wouldn´t surprise me if the Arcade is running on a lightweight Linux System because that would open up some more hardware resources compared to Windows.
@SteelSkin6673 жыл бұрын
@@Soonjai I think the vast majority of arcade games are running in Windows these days, including a lot of Raw Thrill games, but from what I can tell Cruisn' Blast seems to be running Ubuntu (if you look around you can find a rip of the software that it is running). I am not sure there is that much hardware-specific optimization done, though, instead they might have spec'd the PC after the fact to keep the price down. Most arcade cabinets these day hide bog-standard PC towers from SIs like HP or Dell; It is a bit of a departure from the ultra-custom arcade boards of yore, but it is one way the arcade business found to make games a bit more cost-effective.

I bought a copy, I've been playing it & it's pretty awesome. It takes the best of the old & makes it new. It definitely captures the feel of the originals & old midway games in general. It builds on all the positive aspects of the old games, then turns those things all up to 11. The tracks are even more unique & crazy. The colors, vibrancy & graphics are top notch for the Switch & really bring the game to life. I was honestly playing it in awe at some points of just how cool the tracks are. The cars are better & there's a decent amount of unlockables. The driving is fun & challenging. It also runs surprisingly smooth on the Nintendo Switch, I was shocked that it maintains a 60fps frame rate with everything that is going on in during a race. In terms of content there's not a crazy amount of other modes, but the replayability of all tracks & challenge of the game is nicely balanced. And for 40 bucks it's honestly a steal, it's the best arcade racer on the Switch. If they add any additional content, that would be the icing on the cake.

Well done with the video. Nice! I LOVE these over-the-top racing games. I have ALL the Cruis'n games for my N64 and actually, those games are some of the reasons why I am a retro gamer today. This game looks AMAZING and more importantly it looks fun! Instant buy for me.

This game looks so fun damn! also as impressive as this game looks we desperately need a switch upgrade.

The game is awesome and activates something in me that just feels joy every time I play it. It's probably nostalgia and the fact that it feels like an arcade game (because it is).

@@ak2112 on PS3 too, but I'd like a port of Daytona 2, which is as neglected as Turbo Outrun. Outrun got ported to dozen of systems, even newer ones, while Turbo never made it past the 16 bit systems.

There won't be an official PC port anytime soon as long as Nintendo's policy stays that way because Cruis'n is actually their IP.

@oscarzxn40673 жыл бұрын
@@XZ-III The game doesn't look a whole lot better on Arcade though, there are some effect missing but overall if you dislike the texture quality and such here the Arcade won't impress you either, the game look is more about the colors and spectacle and the Switch version keeps that very well.

@Glaciartest Nintendo only co-owns the Fatal Frame IP with Koei Tecmo. When Fatal Frame gets published by Koei Tecmo and not by Nintendo, it can get releases outside of Nintendo Platforms. Cruis'n on the other hand is an IP that is and always was fully owned by Nintendo. You won't see a release outside of NIntendo platforms in that case as long as Nintendo doesn't change its release policy.

I remember playing the arcade machine at the Great Canadian Midway in Clifton Hills back in 2019. Man it's as fun as I had playing Cruis'n World in the 90s at the local mall arcade, and Crusin' Exotica at the movie theater arcade in the 00s.

It’s a real shame Raw Thrills don’t port all of their arcade games to PC. It would be basically free money, the arcade games run on PC hardware already so it wouldn’t be difficult to polish them for home use a bit and release them on steam, and then people would buy them and play them that way. But instead, we just wait until someone cracks the encryption and run them via arcade loaders like Teknoparrot or Jloader and have to deal with bugs and weirdness because they weren’t built to run at home…

Finding all the hidden keys in each level adds loads of replayability and reminds me of the keys in Diddy Kong Racing. Unlocking and upgrading all the cars (which are included, not DLC) is great fun too. If you enjoy Ridge Racer, Daytona, Sega Rally, Crazy Taxi, etc, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this game too.

Just finished 100%ing this game the other day and enjoyed almost every minute of it (looking at you, British Invasion XD). It ran perfectly fine the whole way through for my tastes. Took me about 35h to get a platinum, there’s a lot of content

Digital foundry, please do a modern tech review on battlefield 3. It's a phenomenal 10-year-old game that still holds up surprisingly well in terms of graphics and gameplay. This is surprising since its approach in its art style is realism (in spite of the blue tint). Nice video by the way.
