My wife and I have rented these RV's several times. We really like them. We had a few questions that I couldn't find answered anywhere online so I made this video to show some of the features/walk through/operations of the standard Cruise America rental RV. If you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments. We'd be glad to help other renters. Drive safe, have a great trip, and if this video has been helpful to you please "like" and "subscribe". Thanks!

Seeing all of the things on this RV sure brought back some fond memories. My late wife (20+ years now) and I had an older 27' Allegro, 1978, that we refurbished on the inside and did a few upgrades to the electrical to make it more convenient and safer. We spent many memorable hours in that old coach. It was almost a given that any three-day holiday weekend was going to find us out on the road with it. When we bought the house I'm living in now we installed an electrical outlet on the side of the house to plug the RV into house power and also added a sewer receptacle to our septic tank so that we could dump our grey and black tanks once we came back from a trip. We sold the RV just before she was diagnosed with cancer as we were in the process of doing some remodeling on our home and just didn't have time to use or maintain it. I have often wished I still had that old coach just to get away and enjoy some time away from familiar surroundings. One thing I will tell you is if you are married to not just your partner but your best friend, RV'ing can be the most fun you can ever have. RIP, Kitten.

Thanks for checking out my Cruise America walk through video. Two of the most common questions we get are "how much does it cost?" and "what sort of mileage do you get?" Because of the general nature of these questions it's impossible to give an exact answer. Regarding the price to rent, there is no "fixed price". There are many variables involved. For example: what model/size RV you are renting, how far you plan on driving, if you are renting during "peak" or "off peak" season, how far in advance you make your reservation, whether you're using the generator (which has an hourly usage charge), if you need any optional extras (such as cooking kit or bedding kit), etc. Also they do periodically offer deals and specials if you get on their email list. I like to compare it to the price of a nice hotel ($90-$300 per night), with the bonus that you get your own full kitchen and can bring your pets along. Your best bet is to go to the Cruise America website where you can select from the available options to get a better idea of cost: www.cruiseamerica.com/rv-rentals Regarding the mileage, in our experience we averaged around 12-14 mpg with the 25' RV and around 8-10 mpg with the larger 30' RV (slightly higher with the newer vehicles due to more efficient engines and transmissions). Again, there are many variables involved such as how much weight (including people and equipment) you are carrying, whether you are driving across flat terrain or up & down mountains, highway or city stop-and-go traffic, and of course how heavy your foot is! 😉 One other consideration is if you are running the generator while driving (for example: to run the rooftop AC to cool passengers in the back) the generator also draws from the main fuel tank. As a safety feature (to prevent you from running out of gas) it will not turn on if the level of gas in the tank is too low. We also have a newer walk through video showing some of the 2021/2022 vehicle updates here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5OloHRmrZp5pdk Hope this helps!

Thanks for the comment! I've seen their used RV's go for less than $30k. You can add an awning at time of purchase, as well. Seems like a great deal for a "no frills" RV that can easily be maintained and upgraded by the new owner. I'm definitely thinking about buying one someday! :-)

We rented this RV in 2016 for a trip to Indy. It was our first experience with Cruise America. Most of the details shown are accurate. The upper sleeper compartment is invaluable! First, the kids get a bit of privacy, even though its small, but it also lets you keep the dinette table open all the time for much needed table space & seats. I can’t see having more than 4 people in this model. Compared to other rental companies, they are fine, but realize the stores are independently operated & your experience will vary greatly. In 2017, we rented again from Cruise America, but this time the larger 30 ft model. What a difference! For about the same money, you get a larger bed in the back, a sofa, & generally more room. The biggest difference was driving. We noticed side winds would push around the 25 ft version, while the 30ft, had no issues. Both drove the same & had similar gas mileage at around 10-12 MPG (NJ to Indy & back) It’s a shame more companies do not rent these because the Cruise America RV’s are pretty basic. There is no awning, no slide outs, & no TV’s & DVD players. All the other smaller companies offer these amenities. Overall, good experience, but now I’d like to see alternatives.

I got a quote from Cruise America when I went to rent a class C this year. Frankly their prices were very high. I end up renting direct from an owner via one of the RV rental by owner sites. It was a good experience and I saved myself a fair amount of money. Just be warned though. There are lots of unresponsive owners on those sites and some that did respond were downright rude.
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike 4 жыл бұрын
We book in advance and pick "off peak" days and can usually rent for around $85/night. This works out to be a lot less expensive for us to travel with our dog. Looked at Outdoorsy and similar sites but have a lot of concerns about renting someone's personal vehicle, as opposed to from a corporation. Obviously YMMV. Good luck! 😀

After a few hours, vacuum ALL areas of the RV including under the driver’s and passenger’s seats, over the cab, fridge and freezer, microwave, stove top, shower and bathroom.

Hi! We didn't use the roof AC on our most recent trip, but used it on the two prior trips (where we had shoreline power). I'd say it works well enough. It's a bit noisy, and takes some time to cool down the entire inside. Also if you turn it off or open the door it will warm up again pretty quickly. It's adjustable and makes a good "white noise" for sleeping. This was just with the two of us and our dog. If you have five or six people in there and they're all moving around, doing cooking, or anything like that, it may feel a bit weak for you. That said, it does cool off the inside sufficiently to make a noticeable difference during warm weather. Park the vehicle in the shade (if possible) helps a lot, too. Have a great trip!

Hi Mike, thanks for the review. We are planning a trip for 10 days, renting the standard RV of 25 feet. We would like to don't use the campgrounds and save some money and have some freedom. How long will work the battery for the fridge and the heater without connection...one night, couple nights? Is the solar charger working to refill the battery? What about the long lasting of the water and grey waters that we have to dump? and last one, is there any problem to park in the cities? Thanks!
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the comment. The fridge in these rentals (and in most RV's, these days) can be powered by either propane or electric. It will switch over automatically, depending on the availability of electricity. Make sure your propane is filled before starting your trip since it can be more challenging to "top off" once you're on the road. The longest we've camped without hookups is three days. We had no problems with power, propane, fresh water, or the black water tank. We only used the generator for about an hour. Where we did run into trouble was the gray water. Fresh water capacity is 40 gallons, but the gray tank only holds 25 gallons, and after three days of us showering, washing dishes, etc., the gray tank was completely full. Obviously if you don't shower and wash dishes as frequently, or use campground facilities, that won't be a problem. That was just our experience. Personally I go camping to avoid cities and couldn't imagine trying to park one of these in a major metropolitan region like Washington, DC, but I suppose it would be possible if you can find a large enough spot.

Hi! Thanks for the comment. I would suggest going to their website and checking out some of the pricing options. What you're asking has a lot of variables involved. For example, what time of year you book, how far in advance, how many miles you drive, if you use the generator, order the optional kitchenware kit or blankets kit, optional insurance coverage, etc. Too many options to lay out in a KZbin comment. It might be a couple hundred bucks for a weekend, or a thousand or more for a cross-country vacation. Good luck, have a safe trip!

Hey! We were thinking of renting an RV for our trip to Yosemite. Question: Does the generator have a separate fuel tank? For the generator, does cruise america provide the oil for the generator?
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the comment. The generator uses fuel from the main gas tank. It's pretty efficient, think it only uses around a gallon an hour. There's also a cut-off so it won't completely drain your gas tank of you forget to turn it off. Cruise America will reimburse you for oil, just bring them your receipt.
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike 4 жыл бұрын
@@rhettlawrence3400 Hi Rhett! Thanks for the comment. So, there's two air conditioners in the vehicle. The first is for the cab. It operates like a normal vehicle air conditioner, i.e., you can only turn it on when the engine is on. It does a fine job cooling the cab but doesn't do much for the back. The second air conditioner is the one you see on the roof of all RV's everywhere. It only operates when the vehicle is plugged into shoreline power (like at a campsite) or when the generator is running. Cruise America does charge $3.50 per hour for generator use, and recommends you check the oil in the generator periodically when using (just like checking the oil in the lawn mower). So if you're going somewhere where it gets hot at night that doesn't have power, yes - you will need to run the generator to run the rooftop AC. One tip: try to park in the shade, if you can, since this helps keep interior temperatures down during the day. Have a safe trip!
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike 4 жыл бұрын
@@rhettlawrence3400 That is correct, yes. It's a frequent discussion on some of the RV forums - how often do people run the generator while driving? A lot of folks do run them for people in the back while driving. Personally I never had a need because I don't travel with anyone besides my wife and the dog. 🤣 I guess it's going to have to be one of those "try it and see" kind of things. Open the windows may provide enough ventilation? Good luck, have a safe trip!

Oops, another question please, would you consider buying one of these from Cruise America? Do you think Cruise America takes care of them well mechanically?
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike 4 жыл бұрын
Hi again! I've looked at the ones Cruise America has for sale. They typically turn them over once they get past 100k miles and sell them for around $30k. $30k for a basic RV seems like a really good deal to me. Sure, the interiors are pretty basic, but if I bought one I'd rip that out and replace with Ikea furniture anyway, LOL. Mechanical components you'd probably want to have checked over thoroughly. I don't think they do a whole lot of mechanical work at the retail locations. They may cycle them through a central shop, or something, but I didn't even see any oil changes or tires changed in the retail store locations. You'd almost certainly need to change all the fluids and put good new tires and alignment on them if you buy one. On the bright side I think them being pretty common is a good thing. Spare parts for maintenance and repairs should be pretty cheap. If you're good with tools you can probably do a lot of that maintenance yourself.

They are maintained well and they do provide maintenance records. When you go buy one they have several on the lot (I was in Mesa, their headquarters.). You are able to go through each one and choose the one you want. On a decently maintained Ford V10 140,000 is nowhere near the end of the line. Things like front end alignment or shocks and struts may need some love. They are bullet proof for newbies and have all you need in as simple a way as possible, that allows you to make it your own. They offer an extended warranty on the drive train and the house parts like water heaters or furnaces. If you buy that and the fridge fails that would pay for it.

Hi! Tough to say, since you know your dog better than I do. With our Chihuahua (a short hair) we barely have to do any additional cleaning besides sweeping up where he's walked. I would recommend bringing along a regular household broom, paper towels, some kind of good cleaning solution spray (in case she has any accidents or spills food), a plastic bag for trash, and a lint roller if she has long hair and gets up on the furniture. I'd try not to leave any hairs lying around just in case whoever rents the vehicle after you has any allergies. Good luck, have a safe trip!

They have great portable pet vacuums that are very reasonable. I have one to clean small spaces and it works especially great in my vehicle. I’d bring one of those along. Clean as you go as to prevent to much buildup. I too have a white dog who sheds heavily. His hairs tend to embed into things. A thought is to cover any hard to clean surfaces like the couch and things with some short of cover or sheet, which can easily be removed and washed. Something else to try that would be helpful is to Take your Dog outside and brush daily to remove all those loose hairs yourself. Oh one more thought. The day before you travel give your fur baby a bath and if he or she doesn’t mind blow dry afterwards. It will remove a lot of loose hairs ahead of time. I know it’s kinda an uphill battle. Still with all this I would imagine you would be able to avoid any additional charges and also avoid future customers from possible allergy attacks. I hope this helps. I am in the process of planning my first rental with anything like this and super excited and so I’ve been thinking of all these things myself. Good luck and Enjoy

Hi! Thanks for the comment. They've recently changed the color on the newer model year rentals. The first couple we rented the interior was sort of a brownish-tan color. The newer ones are more of a charcoal-gray color. They used a darker stain on the wood cabinets, as well. Overall the new ones are darker but they look nicer, in my opinion.

Hi! I don't see why not. Although you'd have to secure it pretty well to keep it from falling over when you drive. Honestly, given the space limitations, I think a tablet loaded up with movies would be a much more practical (and modern) solution than a bulky old TV and DVD player. You might want to look at an Amazon Kindle Fire "Kids Edition". They come in bright colors and are really durable. Good luck!

@@alexmartinez-rr6wi I've mentioned quite a few times, there's no way to give an exact price because of all the variables. For example: if you rent during peak or off-peak time of year, miles driven, whether you use the generator or any of the optional extras (such as cooking kit or bedding kit), optional insurance, or any discount codes applied (Cruise America offers many discounts such as for one-way trips, mileage discounts, etc.). Also costs are way up currently because of high demand due to Covid. I like to compare it to the cost of a nice hotel room, ranging from around $100 per night up to around $300 per night, not including if you stay in a nice campground. Your best option is to go to the Cruise America website. They have tools on there that allow you to put in your specific trip details and determine a price. Hope this helps!
