I'm a Spyder guy but I will concede the refinement points to the Wing. Honda is one of the best automotive manufacturers in the world. They have been making motorcycles for 74 years and Gold Wings for 49 -- the current model is the 6th generation. BRP has been making Spyders for 16 years. They simply haven't had the time, experience, or development cycles that Honda has, and remember: Some people consider the Gold Wing to be the best touring motorcycle in the history of motorcycles. That said, the Spyder is an excellent product and its perfect for my needs. And as the riding population gets older, we will see more and more people gravitate to them.

I own a 22 Sea to Sky & a 23 R1250 GSA. I love them both! I prefer the Spyder for cross country jaunts (though I’d prefer the BMW’s gas mileage). Last September I rode the Spyder from SC to South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and back. It was like riding a comfy recliner the whole way!

Moving to a high traffic area (Tampa), I knew it was only a matter of time before I laid my Victory CCT down wether it my fault or somebody else's. I reluctantly sold the 2 wheel and bought a 2021 RT Limited and don't regret it. My rides are more enjoyable for me as we ride 2 up often. I am more relaxed and know that gravel, oil, roadkill, etc pose less of a hazard to us. Also having a bigger machine helps with being seen out there. Drastic evasive manuevers far out-perform any 2 wheel machine as well. Looking at getting a F3 so we can both have a toy and ride serrate or together as we wish. I do miss the feel of 2 wheels, I won't lie, but for me the Spyder is a safer choice.

I have owned a Gold Wing and it is an amazing piece of machinery...heavy yes, but amazing overall ride/handling. I have riden a CanAm RT several years ago. I really liked it, but it is just not as refined as the GW...Integration of tech falls short as you mention...basic maintenance is huge win for GW and the GW engine is second to none w/ very solid mpg's, and there is no excuse for requiring premium fuel by the CanAm with the additional loss of higher mpg's. If only Honda would offer a factory trike option...one can dream.

I’ve owned three Goldwing‘s in my life beautiful bikes give a lot of accessories to customize them as you like, ii is a smooth running bike, but if you are 6 feet or taller, it seems a little cramped to me as my knees get worse, I moved over to the Can Am Spyder RT. It does take some getting used to, but it is a very smooth running bike. I don’t have the issues with cramping. I felt it necessary with a goldwing to purchase a custom aftermarket seat for comfort, but the spider seat is just fine as it is, and it is excellent when it comes to rain protection, I give it to stars over the Goldwing. I still love you Goldwing well, if they can change the seating to a true cruiser style position that would give comfort to the taller man I think you’ll be totally unbeatable.

In our (former) GWRRA chapter several are aging out of 2-wheels. The more recent converts are going to the CanAm Spyder over the trikes, and one couple last year got a '22 RT that looked very similar to the one you rode, only red. They too had difficulties with the tech initially but seem to like it. I guess if it can extend your riding time, it's worth it. I'm not sure if I'll do that when I'm ready to give up the two-wheels or not. For now, I'm all about two-wheels, and no gravel!!! Nice review Chris.

On the Spyder you have to constantly look ahead carefully at the road as you have 3 tire tracks. The Goldwing of course has only 1 to watch for, making avoidance manoeuvres quick and simple. On the Spyder you will hit the debris. Even a car has less tracks to worry about.

I just want to make one point as a Spyder owner, Agree with everything you said. A new Gold Wing Trike is $52,000. A new Can Am is $32,000.00. Just saying. Some people have to ride a trike because of health or balance reasons.

Good video, Mr. Cruise Man. I'm here in Arlington from Michigan. I own both the Can-Am Spyder RT and the Honda Goldwing for several years now. I try not to compare the two because they're two totally different bikes. I have a 2015 Can-Am Spyder RT limited and I also own the 2019 Honda Goldwing DCT airbag. I love them both and try not to compare them. As you know with the Goldwing you're limited to what you can bring with you whereas with the Can-Am Spyder I can go long-distance, shopping at the store and be accommodated with the storage compartments.

Well done here Cruise. The Can Am RT is the top of the food chain. A beautiful product. Just a thought. With the aging Baby Boomers and the desire to keep riding with faces in the wind and the autonomy provided by it. Sometimes the concern is balance challenges or a riding partner’s concern for two wheels. It’s great to have choices and Can Am certainly is a good one. A Gold Wing Trike evaluation might be in order. A bit different in handling. The dealership I have been going to for 20+ years is a National leader in Gold Wing builds by Motor Trike. They build some very nicely engineered Wings. At DFW Honda, they all know about you down there. I mean, who doesn’t right. See Chad the Sales Mgr if you’re ever interested. Now for Part 2 “for the rest of the story”.

Former Gold Wing owner, recent 2021 Harley Road Glide Special owner, and now a Spyder Sea to Sky owner. I think your comparison was fair. I think it just boils down to personal needs and preference. We live in the country and I ride 5 miles of gravel just to reach blacktop. I also have some physical issues. Those two things alone make the Spyder a better choice for me.

The attraction in comparing them is because they have the same Use Case: Machines designed for open-air, long-distance touring, at a relatively high price point. And their potential purchasing demographic is very similar: Middle-aged (for the most part) people who want to hit the open road (quite often two-up) in something other than a cage. Different execution -- same Use Case.

Hey Cruiseman, I'm looking into getting a 3-wheeler, a Goldwing trike or a Spyder RT. Maybe you could compare a front 3-wheeler to a rear 3-wheeler instead comparing a 2-wheeler to a 3-wheeler. You can buy a new Spyder RT for the cost of a used Goldwing Trike. Now take from here, I'm pulling for the Goldwing trike.

Keep in mind converted gold wheel, trikes and Harley trikes are set up exactly like 3 wheel ATVs that were outlawed due to the incredible danger of them flipping over because the wheel stability with 2 in the rear, and one in the front is not ideal. The Can-Am’s were designed in the reverse order with a built-in balancer to keep you from flipping over. Just food for thought from an experienced Can-am individual.

I have 2 RT spyders and a Rebel 1100. First I’d say you are definitely correct on your electronics assessment. The GW is far superior to the RT. Getting used to the Can Am is inherently different than than a 2 wheeled cycle of course so the handling aspects are hardly comparable. So, why did I buy the RTs? Long distance cruising comfort + storage. There is little or no question though that a two wheeled cycle is perhaps 2 to 3 times more fun to drive than a trike.

I am an 85 year old former Can Am RT Limited owner. I now ride a Goldwing Trike. While not deal breakers, there were a few things about the Can Am that bothered me. You mentioned the need for Premium Octane fuel vs Regular for the Honda. You may not agree, but I always felt the Can Am was a little under-powered. When it was necessary to pass another vehicle within a relative short distance, I felt very uneasy. The torc just wasn't there. While the Can Am power steering was great for riding tail of the dragon, triple nickle and the whole hog, on straight-a-ways it seemed the front wheels were constantly twitching. Another thing that bothered me was that the Can Am rear tire would only last for 10k-12k miles. I found comfort comparable on both trikes. Up until the 2024 model, Can Am fell far behind on technology. The price difference between a Goldwing trike and a Can Am can easily be the deciding factor, but it's great that we have choices.

I like your review, in comparison on both bikes. I’m a current RT owner and I have really enjoyed riding this bike. I’m I am also a big Honda fan, especially the Goldwing. The spyder is the first non-Honda cycle that I have ever owned. So I am partial to Honda cycles, but I do love my Spyder RT. I stopped riding back in 1991 and just started riding cycles again last year in 2022. So I am a new old rider. Didn’t know how much fun I was missing until I got the RT . I feel a lot safer on it than I would a two wheeler. glad to be back in the riding game again. I always enjoy your reviews and your comparisons on stuff. Thanks for the good information. Ride safe and take care.

It's funny that this video popped up for me. I test rode the RT 2 weeks ago. I found the steering to be twitchy too. I went back a week later to try a Ryker (just because) and found it to be twitchy, but then I tried the F3 Limited. The F3 is so much more stable and peppier. If you notice, the handle bars sweep far back compared to the RT. It makes for a more stable ride. The limited also has the side bags and tour pack like the RT, but that and the front storage area are all a little smaller on the F3. PS - I also tried a HD tri-glide. I really enjoyed that. Having the option of using either the handle bar brake of the foot brake (the brake on the HD are linked) was really nice. Can Am should consider making that an option.

91 octane is recommended, but certainly not needed. I have run nothing but 87 octane over several years and have had zero issues. Also your fuel mileage is extremely low. Over several years my Spyder has averaged over 35MPG with most of that in the mountains and on the freeway. If on flat or local roads 40 is easily doable. You are spot on as far as electronics. BRP needs to get with the program and adopt Apple Play and get rid of their over-complicated and antiquated software. Once you have some miles under your belt the twitchiness is gone (it is operator error). One really nice feature on the Spyder that you did not mention is a real reverse. Not a starter motor one like Honda and Harley (I rode a TriGlide before the CanAm).

If I ever transition to three wheels, I think the Tilting Motor Works version that actually counter-steers and leans like a motorcycle yet locks the tilting action act low speeds would be more enjoyable. Either way, having two wheels up front should substantially increase the stopping power. I'm not a fan of the two wheels in the back "Meter Maid" style.

I ride a 2020 RT Ltd, I can tell you, the mpg avg is about 35 mpg, adn it will run just fine on regular 87 octane. I came off a 2005 GW, 2012 RoadSmith conversion, I can tell you, it's the Spyder hands down. I did ride the two wheel GW for years, and yes I agree with you, it is a fine machine, if not the best out there for touring.

I definitely agree with your observations! I'm a 21' Spyder RTL owner is the 2nd Spyder I've owned. I've got 47k between the 2 Spyder's and 250k+ on 2 wheels. The 2020 and new RT is MUCH easier to work on , although I believe BRP tried to make it hard as possible to work on for owners. With all this said I still Love the Spyder! My wife rides with me way more than the 2 wheel machines I've owned. The Goldwing is definitely better in a lot of ways, especially maintenance and MPG's.

I had sold my 2012 Goldwing and purchased a Spyder RT Limited because my old lady's health issues got to the point where she could no longer ride on the back of the Goldwing. Unfortunately, her health worsened, and she couldn't even ride with me on the Spyder. The Spyder was a lot of fun to ride but I missed the performance, using regular gas, and the ability to do my own maintenance (using your videos) on my Goldwing. You did an excellent job reviewing the Spyder! I would enjoy seeing you compare the Spyder versus the 2023 Honda Goldwing DCT Motor Trike Condor that they sell at the DFW Honda dealer.

I owned a 2015 CanAm Spyder RT Limited (new). I kept it for five years and drove it for 5000 miles. The only positive things I can say is it was a good looking and reliable motorcycle. I really did not enjoy the riding characteristics of this motorcycle and it wasn't the easiest machine to work on. I got the usual 30-45 minute test drive and it simply was not long enough to learn the intricacies of this machine. From my perspective, a two wheel motorcycle is much more enjoyable to ride for the driver and pillion. I'm now riding a 2023 Honda Goldwing Tour DCT and enjoying the experience each time. The only real negative for me is the seat, however, I now have a Day Long seat from Russell and without a doubt is the best motorcycle seat I've sat in in 50+ years and several motorcycles.

'22 Can-Am Spyder RTL here. One year old with 10k+ miles. Before purchasing the Spyder I considered the Goldwing. I opted for the Spyder because I ride very long distances 2-up (most recent trip Alabama to Monument Valley and Arches National Park...straight shot, non stop. I would have been a bit hesitant to do that on 2 wheels with my lady on back. The only real gripe I have with the Spyder is no Android Auto and no built-in GPS, though I'd probably use Google GPS more often because it's better at updates, BUT at $30k you would expect built-in GPS. Maintenance: oil change, air filter, real wheel removal for tire replacement and most other maintenance and some repairs are a BREEZE and i'm not a wrenching type of fellow. The Spyder RTL is loaded with features: power wind screen, Brembo abs, traction/stability control, auto height leveling (when there is a passenger), cruise ctr, LED lighting all around and all of the other points that you've mentioned in your video and more.

I had a Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager 1700 (I know it's not a Goldwing). I came to the conclusion (reluctantly) that is was getting too heavy for me to maneuver around in my town with give way signs, traffic lights and roundabouts. I replaced it with a Can Am Spyder RT Ltd because I still wanted to ride. Some of the points you make are fair mine is the older 998cc 5 speed version and it can be thirsty using sometimes up to 8 litres/100kms with a 25 litre tank (I use 95 or 98 octane fuel). I don't feel it is underpowered in that it is quick off the mark and will easily sit on 110km/h (the speed limit in Australia where I live) all day. The RT Ltd I own comes with its own GPS that connects to the bikes audio system and overrides the music when giving instructions. It is a very comfortable bike (at least as comfortable as the Voyager) and fun to ride but you need to learn a whole new set of skills and forget most of what you know about 2 wheelers. In Australia they are classed as motorcycles, you must take a pre-rider course, wear a helmet and they are not learner legal. Thanks for your video.

I have had two goldwings, one pre children and one post. The first was the 1200 second the 1800. I then got the K 1600 GTLE, one hell of a bike. My wife has bad knees so two wheels gave way to three...The Can Am Spyder RT dark edition 2020, we live in the North East of Great Britain. My wife and i have just finished a 1000 mile road trip from where we live to Wolverhampton (stayed with friends), then onto Southampton, the weather was in the 90s. From Southampton to the Isle of Wight...Back to the mainland and all the way up to the Lake District, from there home all in one week. The can am was, to put it bluntly bloody fantastic, yes the fuel economy could be better but then what bike will let you carry up to 38 stone safely, not that my wife, luggage and I weighed that. To finish, the Goldwings, brilliant, the BMW K1600GTLE brilliant but the Can Am.....bloody fantastic.... A bit long winded sorry, but it had to be said Mitch....ride safe..

Major issue is that you dont have to have any bike riding experience to use the spyder or even the smaller ryker.

I currently own a 2020 Spyder RT Limited (Dark Edition). I rode Harley touring bikes for years and logged many miles. One thing I discovered while on the road is no one cares what you're riding. So, that means it should be all about your comfort. So, I decided that I would take a look at Goldwings to fill that comfort gap a little better. While at the dealer looking at the GW there was a CanAm Spyder next to the GW. Since several of my friends owned Spyders I looked at the Spyder and wound up buying it. I'll admit it was a new experience riding it. It is fun and different! Many of the things you presented in this video are spot on. Tech is lacking. Engineering is horrible in my opinion. Maintenance and parts support is mostly non-existent. I've been fortunate in that I haven't had anything significant fail or break. I was subject to the only recall that I know of. It was the brake light switch. Mine failed before they issued the recall so I ended up paying for it myself. My friends that have Spyders as well, have had more than their share of issues. None of the issues were easily resolved either. I've have done all of my own maintenance, oil, filters, etc. None of my friends do their maintenance so they have had some hefty bills such as $400 oil changes. One friend had a bill for $2,500 after he had lube and new tires installed. Labor rates for CanAm's are really high. Parts prices are even higher. Scheduling can take weeks and some dealers just flat out refuse to work on the 3-wheel products. We were in Arkansas last month riding when a friend needed to have his checked out (no reverse). The dealer said "we don't work on those". My friend ultimately had to load his up and take it back to Florida to have it repaired. As for comfort and each person is different, I find my Spyder to be the most uncomfortable bike I have ever ridden. I can personally only ride about 100 miles before I'm squirming and then I have to get off. It is not suitable for cross-country riding...not for me anyway. I can go on and on about my dissatisfaction with the Spyder so I'll end my rant. Let's just say that you'll be able to find me in the Honda dealer looking at new/used Goldwings. BTW...I'm just outside of Ft Worth. If you'd like to try my Spyder for a few days we might be able to work something out.

It has been encouraging to see Honda slowly fixing the issues they designed into the 2018 Wing. The additional trunk capacity is great and now if they will just fix the side case capacity. It would be nice to fix the seat, but at least RDL can take care of that. The last thing Honda needs to fix is the fuel capacity. An 1800 engine should have at least a 7 gallon tank like the K1600 BMWs have.

lol, I can nolonger pickup my wing (08) and being only 5.5 ft a slight tilt of the rig in the side stand makes getting vertical sometimes hard. So why did I get a spyder rtl22? because it does not fall over!. However, the wing just went to my son. I concur with the communications electronics. Gave up on BRP Go. the ride plays my audiobooks from the phone just fine with out it. but added a Garmin XT2 for phone/massaging and Sena 50s for group rides. Bet BRP did not want to spend the $ to license Android Auto or Apple CarPlay

I’m not yet ready to give up two wheels, but no doubt that for two-up touring, the Spyder has it all over the Wing in the comfort and capacity department.

Having been a Goldwing owner since '94 with the last one being a 2012 that I recently traded in for a New 2022 RT Limited. relearning to ride three wheels has a learning curve, But I am looking forward to getting out and traveling on the Spyder. I do wish it did Google Maps and I wish Can-Am would fix the mirrors, I could look into the mirrors on my Wing and see what was behind me, the Spyder mirrors suck

Spyder guy here also, identical to the one you’re riding. I would say a better comparison would be to the Goldwing trike. I love the G’wings, but as for touring and being seen on the road, the Spyder is better.

I have a 19 GWDCT and a 16 Spyder RT Touring Limited. Concur with most of your observations. Key in riding a Spyder is a light touch on the handlebars and relaxing arms and wrists. Don't over control. I do my own maintenance (your videos are excellent) the Spyder is more challenging at first but you do learn how to properly maintain it. The GW is much easier. My wife commuted to work on our RT. She really dislikes the passenger riding position. The backrest is too upright and not a lot of room between us. She is a petite size gal. Maybe the newer RTs are better. Her lack of comfort is a big reason we only take day trips. We bought the Can Am trailer, its great. Wrapped to color match the RT. We tour on our Road Glide Ultra or the Wing.

Having turned 10K miles in 10 months on my 2022 RT-L I realize I made a 32 thousand dollar mistake. I should have stuck with 2 wheels. MY list of complaints is long. Rear tire last 8-10K/ handle bar controls not adjustable/foot break not adjustable/seat hard as a rock/fuel economy in the mid low to mid 30's/BRP connect is useless. I have many more but you get the idea.

I had the 21 Sea to Sky it was a great bike your review was ok somethings that you gave a bad mark for was just because you didn’t have the bike long enough like starting it ya that was all on you cause its not not hard at all but I must say a positive it does make it harder to steal one lol. To work on them well a 19 minute job takes an 1hr 10 min cause of all the tuberware you have to take off say you want to add a brake light you have to take half of the back end apart to do it. The bike is great to ride the quality of bike not so much and anything to do with the BRP app stinks I myself after 3 yrs traded mine for another branded trike I miss the RT but like the new bike better. Hope you get a Can am to test for a good month

How did you deal with the vastly different steering between the two bikes? As a 40+ year street bike rider I find it nearlly impossible to ride a trike or quad because the steering input is opposite of a motorcycle (counter-steering). I had a couple incidents where someone cut me off on a quad and my "muscle memory" turned the opposite of wha the quad wanted. Almost ended badly. I don't think I could ever effectively switch between two wheels and 3 or 4 (at least with handlebars), so I'm wonding how it worked for you. Didn't steering opposite of what you would on a bike screw with your head?

The Rt literally broke my heart. I currently have a 2018 dct wing. I did a test ride of an rt and I really wanted one for the sake of saftey and I'm no spring chicken. I did my research and knew all about the handling and light grip needed. When I test rode the bike I started in their huge parking lot. I've Ridden sport quads for years and knew what to expect. What a blast..yeah baby! but then I hit the road. Was doing 35 mph on a 4 lane and I guess the rt was getting thrown from side to side due to the truck grooves. A pickup truck was beside me and he thought I was going to hit him. Well, I thought I was going to hit him. Scared me to death. I have been riding bikes and quads for over 40 years. Really really really wanted that spyder but not with that fear factor. Must admit I was also concerned with the reliability of the machine. Always wondered what the spyder would be like if it was a little wider in the front end. Coach Bob does these bikes justice somehow...sniff sniff.

I traded my non DCT ’21 Wing on a ‘23 Spyder RT Limited. It is literally like comparing apples and oranges. It took me about a week to get used to the Spyder. It takes a light touch to handle the machine with complete confidence. If Honda built a two wheels in front, one wheel in the rear trike using the venerable flat 6 and DCT, it would be game over with Honda technology and build quality. Period.

I've had six different bikes, the current one being a Harley. We also own a Mustang GT CS convertible. When i decide no more two wheels we'll drive the convertible. Why drive three wheels?? We feel four wheels is the better choice with a convertible roof and luggage space, heat , air and comfy seats. Handling is far superior as well.

Because they have the same Use Case: Machines designed for open-air, long-distance touring, at a relatively high price point. And their potential purchasing demographic is very similar: Middle-aged (for the most part) people who want to hit the open road (quite often two-up) in something other than a cage. Different execution -- same Use Case.

I've ridden both. Both are an abomination because they have DCTs. No able-bodied rider should give up manually changing gears. We lose a very intimate connection with our machines when we do this. We lose an amazing way of self expression in the process.

You are comparing a watermelon to a pineapple! You need a little more education on the Can-Am, Spyder, and all of its benefits and more understanding of the dynamics of this motorcycle. Yes, even though it is a trike it is a motorcycle! I have been selling these for years now, and I am more than sure that if you came to do a test ride with me, I could put all your disbelief and negativities about the Can-Am Spyder to rest. A Goldwing is a completely different bike with decades of upgraded technology progressing as Yamaha has learned more and more. Do not doubt that Can-Am will not be far behind as they have not been making these motorcycles quite as long as Yamaha has made the Goldwing. Although you pointed out positives and negatives of each bike… I feel your opinion is a little jaded. Hopefully you get a little more time and understanding with the Can-Am Spyder, and how to ride it correctly. PS…. I help connect people’s phone to this bike almost every day via Bluetooth and it does not take more than one minute it is incredibly easy.

Yes, I agree this 'test' was bias. 10,000ml on a Goldwing and only a few hours on the Spyder does not make a good comparison. This report was very jaded with things like "very twitchy, fuel thirsty, lower power feel, heavier". I personally have an older version in the form of a RS, it does me well (last 2 wheels I had was in 1986). I have ridden a RTL and a F3S and of course they are way more refined compared to my RS. CG really needs to find a RTL he can borrow/rent for a decent few days of riding.
