Yes the clutch takes some adapting too...just like the DCT does....but once you adapt your wonder how it ever felt strange...the way the clutch is setup allows for quick smooth shifting..you barely have to pull the clutch to shift...downshifts at speed with its slipper clutch is very smooth....the ride modes does the same with the 6-speed as with the DCT, except for the shift points...put the bike in sport mode and it feels like it gained 20hp and the suspension feels a bit tighter...Honda did a heck of a job with the 6-speed transmission...huge upgrade over the old models.

So, which bike do you prefer: DCT or 6-speed manual? Everyone is raving about the DCT but to me that's like driving a moped. I love to 'disengage' after a long driving stretch and put the bike into neutral, cruising to my stop with no care in the world. I'm leaning toward the manual 6 speed.

I wish I test rode a few manuals when I was researching the new Goldwing. I don't dislike the DCT at all, but there's something about the sound of a manual going through the gears and the control of manual shifting. That hydraulic clutch is not adjustable like a cable clutch is. HD is the same way - the friction zone is all the way out near the end of lever travel.
@lorenerickson6578
@lorenerickson6578 3 жыл бұрын
So, you would have rather purchased the 6 speed manual? I am wrestling with these choices but am leaning toward the manual. With DCT, it sounds like one is riding a moped. What are your thoughts?
@Hogdriver88
@Hogdriver88 3 жыл бұрын
I am very happy with the DCT. It makes riding that much more enjoyable and fun, whether riding long distance on highways or carving mountain twisties. It is far from riding a moped - try one and you will see - especially in sport mode, with or without being in manual shifting mode. My only thought is how it would compare to a 6 speed manual and I would have liked to try one during my 1 year of research, but there were none available. I am happy with my purchase and do not regret it at all.

Chris, the 2020 model has improved throttle response in all modes compared to the 2018. I just traded a 2018 in for a 2020, and promptly took it out for a 3000 mile walk to Michigan from Texas. Seat has also been improved, and I was able to ride 12 hrs without hurting. The new model is hands down much more refined.

I have the 6 speed and did a video on why I bought it over the DCT. The drive modes are the same on the both models, when it comes to throttle response and traction control on the tour models. The drive modes have nothing to suspension as far as I’m aware since the suspension is not electronically controlled. The clutch on my bike engages sooner than that one, also remember it has a slipper clutch that makes the RPM come up as you let the clutch lever out.

You can't "adjust" a hydraulic clutch unit. The clutch not engaging until the top of travel is likely because it is worn out. The revving at idle might because the coolant level is low. On a Honda car if the coolant is low the throttle body does not get the heat it needs to work properly. Not sure on that as I am a Honda Automotive tech but the theory is there. On my 2004 Wing I had to tear it down quite far to get to all the gear clamps it had to stop the coolant leaks. Had the fuel cell out and everything to get to the clamps. I think it had 32 clamps in total Crazy. Overall still love this bike enough to buy it twice...

probably already answered in the comments below ... but yes, the throttle response and 'fueling' from the computer is altered for the different modes. its actually very common. there are many many sport bikes out there that have different modes to 'tone down' the fueling for rain or UP it for sport, etc. This has been out for over 10 years on some yamaha, kaw, honda and suzuki sport bikes.(and others) I love the idea of the DCT. I had a DCT honda NC700 for a little while and it was amazing the fuel mileage and how smooth it was. On buying a new goldwing, I just dont know about the clutch lever & shifter missing. I feel like riding wouldn't be as enjoyable. who knows. everyone online that has the goldwing DCT loves it. But Ive always been a manual trans car guy, and almost always had manual bikes. feels good to ride it and shift gears etc etc. PLUS a lot of slow speed maneuvering is accomplished with clutch lever feathering & slipping. So when considering a new goldwing, the more people I see LOVING the DCT, the more I question getting the manual version. .......... help

When I picked up my 2018 GWT6 from the dealership in February 2018, the clutch engaged immediately with almost no dead zone. I had to stop and move the adjustment dial to "3" because I felt unsafe with the way the clutch was engaging. My assumption is that it came from the factory set that way. Scary for me as when I hopped on the bike for the first time, I was in between two rows of new bikes (outside) and I had to make an almost immediate 90 degree turn, followed by going down an incline, having to wait for traffic, and then making another 90 degree right hand turn. The clutch has been fine ever since...

On my 2018 manual, the different modes only appear to change throttle response. I don’t believe the "Econ" mode re-maps the engine response otherwise. My clutch also engages right at the end. I also had to get used to that when I got the motorcycle, but don’t notice it now.

I've had my 2018 Tour almost 2 years now, this after a 2015. So I think I can make a good call on the difference between the 5 sp and 6 sp. 6 speed all the way, it shifts so smooth and drops the RPM 500 @ 70 MPH. I do not know what the MPG is on the DCT, but I get about 48.5 all day long @ 70 in Tour mode. I've never ridden a DCT, but I will admit that the hill assist is very welcome on the 6 speed. About the clutch friction zone, where is the lever cam adjustment set at? I like mine @ 3, seems to be the best zone for me, but to each their own on all of it.

Just bought a new 6sp 2019 Bagger (in UK). I have owned a DCT Honda and it was very nice but it does have its quirks so I am very happy about my choice. Sometimes DCT does not know what gear to be in especially when going downhill and it can sometimes be distracting looking at what it’s doing. Yes shifting on DCT going up is very very smooth but on downshifts coming to a stop can often be a bit ‘lumpy’ where a slipper clutch manual would not be. Think the ‘bigot’ remark was uncalled for, choosing a manual box on your motorbike does not mean anything other than that, I want a manual box. Anyhow, horses for courses.

Can’t speak to the DCT as I’ve never ridden one but having ridden for 50 years I can say that my 2019 tour shifts better than any other bike I have owned. I shied away from the DCT because I was concerned about slow speed maneuvering, I ride mostly two up on this bike. Friends have the DCT and love it and there is no way I can shift as fast as them but I am very pleased with my 6M. There are five positions on the clutch lever, very easy to adjust.

I'm still torn. While many supercars are moving to dual clutch trannies and gaining quickness as a result (I understand that a well sorted DCT can shift faster than any hand rowing a lever), I also see a trend away from more "engaging" driving. One thing I covet about and associate with riding a single track motorcycle, is that the need to use all 4 extremities in fluid fashion contributes to making the overall experience more engaging and facilitates the magic of feeling "oneness" with the machine, road and surroundings. No question this DCT is a marvel of technology and even addresses successfully the low-speed issues associated with earlier clutchless executions (thinking about the FJR AE here), but I still remain on the fence.

Seems like Honda is moving away from the manual transmission on their big bikes. Not many cars from Honda can be had with a manual either. Thus far I'm a believer in my DCT, I thought I would use the paddle shifters, haven't touched them.

Over here in the UK you can currently buy a manual bagger GW for 19,999 pounds and the cheapest DCT bagger I've seen is 23,499 pounds. I believe the bikes are the same other than for the gearbox. I would really love to get a DCT bagger but is it really worth spending 3,500 pounds more than for the manual version....that's a heck of a lot more cash!?

Cruiseman; I probably missed the story, so you're gonna have to explain why a guy who sells complete maintenance videos has his bike at the dealer for an extended stay :-)

Yesterday I demo rode a 2018 6 speed . I've rode a friends DCT and It was awesome. But from a simplicity point I would buy the 6 speed. I'm sure there is a lot of electronics that control that DCT transmission. After riding my 2013 FJR with a Russell seat I was really disappointed with the GW seat. Otherwise everything about the GW was better. Super smooth engine and ride.

Smooth shifting? listen to the KLUNK on your first two shifts while pulling out. The idle transition map of the ECU needs to be run through its initiation procedure. With bike motor COLD, and without even touching the throtle, in neutral, centerstnded, start the motor and let it adle until the temperature gague reaches its "full warm sweet spot" and continue to idle for about 5 minutes. Then switch the ignition off. The idle be stable and the transition from idle to higher RPM programing will be better. prs

Cruiseman simply hasn't learned how the bike can be shifted..he clearly said it was his first time with the 6-speed...mine is much quieter shifting..like with anything you learn how to work it better...the 6 speed is a huge upgrade over the old model

@@cruisemansgarage Rooster could be right. You commented on the engine 'hunting' at idle and this could be seen on your rev counter. This could well indicate the need for a reset.
