I've been living on board for 22 years. First on a Triton and now on a Countess in the North and south Atlantic and Pacific oceans. I love Pearson boats. I would also like to commend you on your analyses, I have watched several of your videos about different kinds of boats from Bavarias to Pearsons, you are fair and don't seem to fall foul of the classic sailors biases that quite frankly make me roll my eyes to heaven after being around too many boat owners who cluelessly repeat nonsense or love a tall tale. My Dad had a Pearson 365 back in the 80's and 90s. He was fanatical about his beloved Pearson. I have great memories on the Chesapeake and Pamlico on that boat.

Good review. Sailing UMA is a 1972 Pearson 36 which was purchased damaged, significantly refurbished and now sports an electric motor. Uma has sailed the Caribbean, east coast of NA, crossed to the UK and is now sailing the fiords of Norway.

Love our Pearson 35. I lived aboard one in the 80s in San Francisco, and thought the cabin was small for a 35 footer, because the cockpit is so big. Now, with different priorities, those proportions are just right on our, new to us, Pearson 35.

My dad lived on a Pearson 39-2 for years. He took out the nav station and enlarged the aft head with a huge shower pan to make a hanging locker for wet suits and such. It gave him the ability to wash all his gear and dry it. He was tall, 6'4" so his boat was ordered with the cabin roof higher than normal and the aft cabin had a long bed. It was a great boat, solid and very repairable and accessible. He sailed the great lakes, the easter coast of the US, he crossed the Atlantic several times. It was a great boat for him.

Back in the 70's, I owned a Pearson 30. As I recall, it was hull #747. It was a fantastic boat to sail and it had a tiller which gave a great feel. That boat really pointed great. Of course, boat fever took hold and I traded up to a 323. That was also a great boat but, compared to the 30, didn't point nearly as well. The wheel steering was cool but some of the feeling was lost. I've been away from sailing now for many years but I always thought about relocating my old hull 747 and getting it back. How's that for nostalgia.

I met a gentleman that owned a Pearson 30 ish foot I do not remember, he was from Canada, this was in he early 90’s. We met in Norfolk,VA. He had sailed/motored the same route you traveled to to the Atlanic. We went sailing several times and I was impressed with this boat. Now I have to admit I was coming from a bathtub I mean a Catalina 22. I kept my eyes open for one on the market, not to be found. However I did find an exceptional opportunity on an Irwin 45 ketch rigged boat. It was an 84 hull with new sails, Radar, HF radio, an Auto helm coupled to a GPS. A Viking raft.. the power plant was a Perkins 64 hp Diesel the Genset was an Onan Diesel as well oh and duel HVAC system. Osmosis desalinization system this was a true blue water Boat. It also had a zippered Main and mizzenmast and Davidits for the dinghy. I sailed this boat from NJ to the BVI’s several times. I owed her for 4 years and sold her due to a move to Texas. I sure do miss her. I am enjoying your videos on sailing and the various hulls keep up the outstanding work. It would be nice if you made a video on the Irwin line. 😁🛫

I agree wholeheartedly about the quality and durability of Pearson sailboats. My wife and I had a 1967 32ft Pearson Vanguard (#380) for a few years and lived aboard for a year. She unfortunately got heavily damaged when a storm hit the marina she was berthed at and insurance considered her “totaled.” Being several years from retirement we opted to take the money and let the boat go to auction. Having now just retired and looking for a boat to go live our initial dream of sailing the seven seas, I’d give anything to have our lovely Vanguard back. So far we haven’t found anything that meets the benchmark our 1967 Pearson Vanguard set for us.

Lots of nice boats around the Bay that just need some TLC and upgrading, and could be bought cheap. I know a A guy that has an Awesome Aluminum Grumman in his yard for 5k, it's on marketplace. Also several huge abandoned project boats where mine is at Deal Island.

We have one of the ones manufactured on the West Coast by Aeromarine. Triton number 163 from 1962. The cool part about the West Coast version is that they did not use cored decks - all solid fiberglass, so never worry about soft decks and having to repair all that mess. They also use a lot more fiberglass and less wood in other areas, so less maintenance with the same design.

My very first boat was Pearson 323 . Didn’t know anything about boating. Never sailed 1 foot. Once I learned how to sail … man oh man that was a awesome boat. Looking for another one 30 years later.

Good reminder for me. Lived on a Pearson 26 in Maine for two years (including Winter). Interesting experience. Bought it used at auction and it never gave me cause to regret the purchase. It was "bulletproof". I haven't had a boat for about a decade but will be looking for a full keel cruiser (cutter or ketch) in a couple of years. Pearson will have to be on the list. In 1984 I bought a brand new Pearson 25. Picked it up at the Pearson factory. It was based on the old US 25. A fin keel fast boat. Decent boat sailed well

The 35 is a model older than the P323. The version after the P323 has a P36. This boat has systemic deck to hull leaks, which intrusive water destroys the balsa deck core. Most decks have been fixed, beware.

I own a 31-2 on a small NE Ohio lake and want something between a 365 and 424 for Bahamas and Caribbean sailing (part time) within the next 10-12 years. Do you store your boat on the hard most of the year in FL or keep it at a marina or mooring?

A late comment but, yes, Pearson boats are solid and will not fail you! We had a 30ft Coaster and sailed Lake Michigan for years. I also raced in Pearson Ensigns! Absolutely rock solid... thanks for bringing back so many great memories.

As I said in my comment before, I was going to inspect the ‘80 Pearson 28-1. Well …. It was in excellent condition for 40 something year old boat. Everything advertised by the owner was accurate even better than the pics. Sailed it 350 miles home from Florida to Mississippi. The boat lives up to your video. Solid deck and that Yanmar 2ym15 diesel (w/only 95 hrs ) runs sweet. Sips fuel. It was an excellent purchase.

My first sailboat as an adult is a 1975 Pearson 28, hull #54. It has some bumps and bruises but at the end of the 1st season I am beyond pleased. The interior is untouched 1975 vintage and is way less than useable, that is a winter project. My location is about 10 miles West of where it was built, and hulls #61 and 68 are in the same yard right now. I've counted 5 Pearson 26's and 4 30's at the marina also, all from the early - mid 70's. Indestructable!!!

You made a lot of interesting points. One in particular is the boat can be pushed beyond your ability. I learned on a Pearson 28 . I would often put up too much sail , and round up . I would jibe in high winds with the boat doing well. I would run aground so often the boat US guy would say John is that you . Great boat and memories.

I now own a ‘79. It’s my first sailboat and I love it. There’s a bunch of other boats in my marina about the same size. Just love comparing things like the turnbuckles in comparison to the other rigs. They really did build them strong.

I had never considered a larger Pearson. A friend has a 34 which is rock solid and handles like an Oldsmobile. She is a pleasure to sail. I’m looking for a cruiser of that ilk, solid, heavy, comfortable. I also like the idea that I could refit the interior and improve it.

We have a 1970 Pearson 35 and love everything about it, with the exception on engine access for maintenance which is a common problem with many brands. Boat is still rock solid, sails easy and is a great boat to be on!

Looking at my 2nd Pearson. Anything I should be aware of on the 1991 P31-2 shoal keel walkthrough transom model? It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for including the walk-through transom from the sugar scoop. I love to swim and have dogs, so that was a must on the list for my second sailboat. I’m thrilled to have found a Pearson with that feature that’s a shoal keel on the Chesapeake Bay.

No mention of Bill Shaw, longtime Pearson in house designer. Also, 80's Pearson's such as the 31 are known for soft side decks due to stanchions and toe - rail being fastened into the balsa core rather than a solid glass edge. Get it surveyed before you buy.

Pearson is a great boat. However, I know of three if not four owners who have lost their rudder. I’m told if the bearings are not maintained properly, it results in losing the rudder. As always Tim, another great video. I love how you have researched and done your homework before making a presentation. Looking forward to the next one.

I'd like to plant a forty foot Pearson on a quarter acre lot and plumb it with well, septic, electricity, and a heat pump. Yeah and an escalator since I'm a old flatlander and those ladders can be problematic to navigate when taking out the trash to the curb. If only I could get code enforcement to OK the deal...

FYI- Not all fiberglass is created equal. The fiberglass resin produced during the time before, during & after the fuel crisis of the early 70's ( from 1968-1972) was generally inferior as attempts to produce it more "economically" and use it as sparingly as possible. Since it had greatly inflated in price as it was made from Petroleum . Resulted in many & major defects. Examples of blisters, bubbles, pinholes and delaminations. Degrading & becoming very brittle.

I recommend the Pearson 35. It's a great coastal cruiser, it loves going up rivers and shallow harbors. It's big enough so that you don't get pushed around out in the blue water. It's easy to work on. NOT Expensive!

Thank you for posting this video. I’m considering a 1988 Pearson 31 (Bill Shaw design). It’s selling for $22K, which I think is a little high, but it’s in great condition and has lots of extras. It’s not a full keel...this is a fin keel. I was hoping to get a full keel boat for my first boat (that’s right...if I get this boat it’ll be my very first boat). Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated. In fact, do you have any suggestions for questions that I should ask the seller?
