When people ask me why I love Virgin to sail on, one of the first things I say is that it is the happiest crew I've ever seen onboard any ship!
@leslyehowell33902 жыл бұрын
Yes Sir Richard obviously has found what makes employees feel valuable and that translates in great guest experiences. Rather simple formula. I think taking the pressure off on up selling everything or anything. Especially, if it makes you uncomfortable and sales isn’t a comfortable talent you have. Pressured by dept management all the time leaves the impression that you are not doing your job well enough. The things you were hired to seems to not be enough. I think I would enjoy cruising on Virgin knowing how they treat their employees.

After my cruse on Virgin a fee months ago, my biggest takeaway - and reason I will continue to support them - is that I LOVE how the company treats the crew. I loved the the tattoos and freedom of expression by the crew. And the fact that there were crew eating among us in the restaurants was amazing!! I was just totally impressed!

I suspect that the fact that there is one crew mess (not an officer's mess and a crew mess) might have a lot to do with positive interaction at all levels of staff. Just seeing each other at meals is positive, even if you don't interact, and it gets ride of the "us" and "them" mentality. Happy crew = happy sailors!
@ManonLeclercq2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree! I work for a company where there is Royal, Officer's mess and Crew mess. On my last contract, we crossed the Atlantic without any passengers on board and only 79 crew members. We did that in like a month (long story as to why haha). During that whole month, we ate at one of the restaurants, all of us together, and it was absolutely amazing! You actually have more respect for everyone, just like you said, there's no "us" and "them"

We just returned from our voyage in the Med and it was great to meet you! As your contracts are short term, is it like reapplying for a new job when you want to renew your contract? Do they usually ask you to sign another one if they want you to return, or do you more or less ask if you can return? I'm interested on how the contract process works. If you've already answered this in a previous video, I'll look for it. Thanks!

As a mere sailor (who is back on Valiant in 6 weeks for the 2nd time in 2 months, the first time went down with Covid on the 2nd night) a couple of comments I hope the pay is decent, I assume your costs as cheaper. I hate tips, I expect decent service from human beings who are treated as human beings ie paid decently. Tips just created horrible artificial environments where people can't be themselves. Do you work for Virgin or your shop, surely a shop needs to be sales focused even if the rest of the ship isn't. Is it simply a case the shop is paid by Virgin to be run and any additional profit is a bonus? I did notice crew with vertical red stripes in the middle of their shirts, I assumed this was to represent a tie, ie they were management and it looked very cool. Virgin is great but I really do hope as a business its still around in a couple of years as European ships at least really don't look very busy which is great for sailors less so for the future
@ManonLeclercq2 жыл бұрын
Everytime I hear you speak about Virgin, I want to try it out! One of the only things that's preventing me from applying is the size of the ships. One of the reasons why I chose the company I am on is because it's small ships (only around 260 passengers and 150 crew). So the fact that Virgin's are huge is absolutely terrifying to me: getting lost, getting overwhelmed with the total amount of people, and most of all safety protocols. It took me a while to register everything safety related on a small ship, so I can't imagine on a ship of that size.

It’s another incarnation of Carnival - Joe Farcus inside out. If you compare their ships with Carnival Conquest class ships, you’ll see the same passenger/internal space ratio. However Carnival ships have more open space and have been designed as one-class ships. A good saying: ships with classes have no class.

I was a bit surprised about your no kids stance (I'm a teacher and foster Mum) but the way that you explained it I can fully understand and If I would invest in a cruise trip it would be a big deal and I would most likely go on an adult only cruise. I think that crew should get good quality food with a lot of variety and no doubt free wifi. I think that Virgin really cares about their staff which I respect. It's awesome that you can go to guest areas especially the restaurants for free.

I had not considered Virgin, mainly because my idea of a cruise is about 14 days, while Virgin is mostly short cruises. But I love the idea of a line that treats crew as people. I know that crew make or break my experience. We will try Virgin. At the moment, I do have one other obstacle. Airports have become such unpleasant experiences that I try to do most of my cruising where I don’t have to fly, so I mostly cruise round trip from NYC.

So I was just on Scarlet Lady last week. Several things are sold before boarding (excursions, bar tab, etc) but there wasn't pressure, only that if you bought early, they gave a $100 increase to the $300. Basic wifi is free, but there were two levels of paid upgrades. I had no difficulties watching Instagram videos or having slow uploads/downloads, but there were others who paid for more internet connectivity. It was my first cruise ever. The biggest barrier was the concern about other peoples kids being unruly or unruly people around kids. Here, it was just be yourself and have a good time. Every time I passed by a shop, they were typically empty with the occasional browsing passenger. Everyone was absolutely polite and friendly; it never felt like a forced interaction from them. I was so impressed that I booked my next trip after 2 days onboard.

@@761jared Was it more of a lively atmosphere? Parties?
@761jared2 жыл бұрын
@@Invertmini1212 There are parties that are held in some of the venues. Also, there is a pajama party at the pool on the first night, and a Scarlet night toward the end, but it was also quiet when you weren’t in those areas. It can be as lively or quiet as you want, but nothing too crazy happens, in my opinion. Just people having fun, but they are easily avoidable.

THIS should be a training video for those who manage service-staff... (VERY OFTEN, in my own experience, those who manage service staff with an approach and attitude that WOULD GET THAT PERSON FIRED if they EVEN REMOTELY adopted the same attitude to the paying customer, fail to get the message and ultimately cost the company money...) In ANY service industry, the attitude and demeanor of the 'point of contact' service staff with the customer IS EVERYTHING to the customer's experience. (UNHAPPY or DISCONTENTED staff make for compromised customers...) In this case, VIRGIN seem to be quite ahead of the curve... I've watched and enjoyed quite a few of your videos, including interviews with service-staff like housekeepers, entertainers and even a tattoo artist!!! IN EVERY CASE, the employees seem to APPRECIATE and RESPECT the benefits that The Company provide them. (Interesting to note that yourself and the staff you've interviewed all work EXTREMELY bloody hard and NEVER consider that THEY THEMSELVES are 'on holiday' in the fashion that the paying customer is... DESPITE enjoying the same amenities when that is appropriated and permitted... They NEVER exploit those permissions. THAT LINE is never crossed.) STAFF take their attitude from those who manage them. (If staff are valued and respected, THAT'S the approach they'll take with the customer...) SAYING ALL OF THAT, there's no question that SOMETIMES staff might have to be taken to task if they are falling short of certain expectations... BUT there is a way of doing that RATHER THAN blame or COMPROMISE the service worker, such as attempts to solve the problem of why that employee may be under-performing... (I COULDN'T DO THE JOB YOU DO!!!!) And AS YOU'VE SAID, it took YOU quite a while to adapt to the conditions, work load and strictures... (But you obviously did... Respect.) Not EVERYONE might adapt as well. (Some employees obviously don't and need to be steered toward a different career avenue...) As in, "This IS NOT for you and we're letting you go." (Management have THEIR JOB to do as well...) You should SERIOUSLY consider Management/Staff training as a career. (I can't believe that Virgin haven't suggested this to you by now!!!) xx SF

But also how much I have to be thankfull for as well. Looking back on how many in our industry lost their jobs world wide through no fault of their own inor their employers either in 2020 I have been extraordinarily fortunate to have worked right through 2020 and my hours have actually increased to the point where I'm working 35+hours a week which in Australia is near on full time. I'm also very close to paying out my morgage and that would have been an impossible dream with out the employment security I've had with Accor for so long. I also know I work with some very special humans who , even though I can leave at the end of the day unlike your self and your team are still a second family to me! as lets face it- we spend more time at work than at home anyway? Right But I too can genuinely say I do love my job the people and company I work for and that the industry and it's people have been very VERRY good to me! And I truly realise how fortunate I am to be where I am in life! For all I wouldn't consider leaving my hotel on land for a ocean Bbased job- namely as I know I wouldn't cope working 7 days a week. Virgin sound like a pritty good employer and I've said it before but will do so again THAT THEY are very lucky to have YOU Lucy as a dedicated loyal employee. As always keep the content comming😁 David Young 37 Brisbane Australia "The oopinion described in the above KZbin comment and it's contence are my personal views alone.
