Regarding days off...I worked in the shops and it depends on the itinerary! I remember we had overnight stays in places such as Dubai and Hawaii, and we had the whole day off until sailing the following day in the late afternoon! I often spent a night off away from the ship! On one occasion I had saved up and decided to book a room at the Atlantis Palm in Dubai, it wasn’t cheap but was one of those life experiences that don’t come often!

I'm going to be careful not to bother crew that are off the clock from now on! I love cruising, but I usually go alone and I feel isolated after a few days, so I can imagine how the crew feels!

You and my both Lucy. I dealt in the casino and once we were close enough to shore we had to close down and get rid of the last compulsive gamblers, but then we had the whole time off in port since the casino was closed too. I liked it since it made for more time off the ship but the moment we were able to open again those same compulsive gamblers were back with a vengeance :-)

Ive sailed as a passenger alot of days. Made great friends with crew, gone out in port with several of them. My first room steward wanted to move to US after contract. I helped them file papers and we have diner a few times a year still. Ill never snitch on crew in port

If you were to install like a temporary plastic bar on the shelves to keep the perfumes in place when your closing up wouldn’t that help? Or is it unrealistic given the position of the perfumes? I mean since you can’t control the weather it would be wise to at least do something to try and keep the stocks in place so they don’t fall when bad weather hits. Because it’s certainly an ugly site to see a full bottle of Versace falling to the ground and being broken 😂.

@@CruisingAsCrew oh thank you. I'm starting up soon as I'm back on board. Maybe I'll try to work out to have you on as a guest for an episode. You'll have to take a cruise on a Princess ship though, that's the deal. Justin from the Shiplife is doing one and I haveva few others in the cruise community committed. Exciting times indeed.

What if a family member, say parent, dies during your employment? Of course you can't just leave, but are you allowed bereavement time off? Or would they still be like, "Doesn't matter. You're working every day."

I have a question! If there's a serious medical emergency onboard, has anyone ever been airlifted off a ship? Or emergency evac to a local hospital? I know there's an onboard dr but what if there's a bigger emergency than they could handle? Or like a major theft or major crime. What happens if you're on a sea day and these things happen?

When my family was on an Alaskan cruise, my dad started having symptoms of a heart attack. My mom, aunt, and I rushed him down to the medical area. They hooked him up on a few machines. Luckily we weren’t able to dock that evening in Canada, or else he would’ve been taken off to a hospital there. It was the last night of the cruise so we arrived back to the US a few hours early and he was taken off as soon as the ship was cleared.

most ships have a helipad on the ship -- and that is why it is very important to have travel insurance no matter your age because that trip on the helicopter is quite expensive -- when you do buy insurance be sure to know what it covers :-)

You cannot keep dairy products in your cabin? Did I hear correctly? What if you are lactose-intolerant?
@CruisingAsCrew3 жыл бұрын
The ship should provide alternatives but if you have a fridge, you can keep dairy products in the fridge and just get rid of it before crew rounds.

Is it true that a lot of people go missing from cruise ships? If so, has it happened from a lot of companies or just the shadier ones? I reccommended my brother in law to apply to work on one and he said its great money but the risk of disappearing is too great.
@CruisingAsCrew3 жыл бұрын
I know it happens but I have never known it happened to anyone I have known. Out of the hundreds of thousands of crew members that work on ships there are 2/3 disappearances. So not too many. Obviously more that we would want but I believe it to be safe.
