I can see that being a Japanese humorous boss character. It's not a uncommon joke to compare a certain physical appearance to a Gorilla in Japan after all so I'm guessing that the developer in question were known as the Gorilla of the office and meaningful enough to bring to the public. Additionally if I'm correct so far it's likely that gunlance were his personal weapon of choice and therefore it resulted in a monkey with a gunlance that represents a certain developer in the game not meant to be taken very seriously. So being a bit used to Japanese culture it's not particularly strange. Considering how the game were mainly targeted towards a Japanese audience along with a few other Asian countries I think it made sense to most of the playerbase.

You can actually still play the game, although in an incredibly barebones means. If you get your hands on the game files, ErupeServer on github provides a way to setup a private server for MHF. It is, as I said, barebones in the literal sense. I don't think it comes with any translation, and a vast majority of the game is unplayable, as outside a few quests that are packaged in with the game files, every quest was hosted server-side, and with the shutdown of the servers they are all lost. The data is still there, but you can't start a quest that doesn't exist, especially if it isn't at the quest counter.

Even though I've never played this part of the series, I gotta say I actually love how they turned the crazy element up to eleven, and gave us some of the most awesome Elder Dragons ever: Laviente - Not an Elder Dragon, but a Dalamadur-sized, ecosystem-eating colossus that is fought by up to 16 people at once, and comes in three different varieties: Normal, Violent and Berserk. Duremudira - Also technically not an Elder Dragon. Guardian of the Sky Corridor, Kushala copy and possible remnant of the Ancient Civilization. Shan'Tien - An epic cross between Lagiacrus, Amatsu and with a bit of Fatalis. Four phases, each with its own theme, with the last being ABSOLUTELY GODLY. Garuba Daora - Kushala, but with gold dust and crystals too. Dhisufiroa - Alatreon, but more specialized and more awesome. Three phases, each with awesome themes and it even plays dead. Harudomerugu - LIQUID METAL DRAGON. Unknown (Black Rathian) - The queen(?) of rage and hatred. Its Solstice theme actually OPENS with the "Quest Failed" music. Guanzoromu - A regal dragon that literally commands lesser wyverns called Egyurasu to fight alongside it - at least until it starts its second phase by eating one and powering up. Zenith White Fatalis - Possibly the original Elder Dragon. Its ultimate attack is so powerful that it doesn't cart you...it VAPORIZES you. What's worse, the only way to even face it is to survive the Hunter's Road. I hope some of these guys are moved over to the main series like Lavasioth was...

You've earned yourself a subscription from me. I've been on a MH kick with the release of Rise, reading about old games, wanting to go back and finally play Generations Ultimate, and even considering giving the original a shot. And Frontier has always mystified me ever since I first stumbled upon it doing research back when I first got into the series. It was great to finally learn a bit more about the game that always seemed like the most strange and mysterious part of the series. And I gotta say, a lot of the issues with the game, such as the endless escalation in both monster and player power, seem like mostly symptoms of being an MMO. Without a regular reset between games, you have no choice but to build higher and higher. But that said, this also seems to have given the game a lot of really unique features that it's a shame that it's now dead. It's also disappointing to hear that it's unlikely that the content will ever come over to mainline MH. The recent games have felt like they could use, say, some new weapons, and Tonfas + Magnet Spikes would be a good additon. Back in the day I always thought Tonfas seemed too flashy, but frankly they'd fit in fine in a post-MHW era.

Edit:After obtaining a max level Ravi weapon and getting a ZP set Frontier is basically my favorite game right now! Sure Zeniths and Mousous as well as Arrogant Dura are tough as hell but that builds the myth!! Hope some of you other fans get to experience this true gem of a game

I really appreciate this as a way to get a sense of all that Frontier had to offer and what we missed out on. My information hoarding brain is satiated. It's so in depth, this could nott have been a simple video to make.

I think worlds engine opened up a large possibility of another attempt at a MH MMO, the series has also finally become as popular as it deserves to be in the west, so thats good.

So I literally just started the video but dude thank you so much for making this Ive been in love for the series for a while now, definitly not a veteran but Ive been playing since MH3U, and ive wanted know so fucking bad why some people hate frontier and why some love its different takes on the monsters and formula. This is literally all I wanted to find, a clear concise objective look at the game. Thank you for that.

I was definitely one of those people that disliked Frontier due to it's Monster design and shift away from the core gameplay, but this has given me a newfound respect for the game and the unique mechanics. I would love to see more of the Frontier Monsters make it to mainline in the future (wild I can even say that now!) just brought more in line with the slightly more grounded design choices of the mainline series. I'd actually love to see Tonfas added too, I could see these working great with Wirebug attacks. Thank you for the hard work in putting this all together, it's helped shine a light on a unique and interesting title.

Double posting to comment on the end of the video where they say "things are cherry picked from Frontier with no credit to the original." The Espinas trailer for Sunbreak was called "A New Frontier." Hopefully whatever internal culture is at Capcom is changing?

I remember being 15 or so when I learned about frontier for the first time. I tried every solution I could find and understand to try and get any kind of access to it, searching forums for months in desperation to test myself against a wild, intense, testing entry in a series I already loved at that point. Somewhere in this process I remember I managed to figure out how to sign up for it's official email updates. Every single one I'd put through a translator to read everything I could, everything that I wanted a piece for myself so badly. I remember the strange, melancholic sadness of loosing my limited connection to it when one of those emails finally revealed it was going away. I felt that same feeling again, both sadness and satisfaction, a sense of connection and much more disconnect when I read the chat messages in your village tour when those people who did get to experience it finally had to let it go.

The same happened to me. Visiting the Monster Hunter wiki while playing Freedom 2 and Monster Hunter Tri and discovering all of these new, unknown and weird looking monsters that I would never be able to hunt. Pure mysticism, now lost.

SUPER late to the party, but my main buzzkill with Frontier was its control scheme. Instead of WASD or arrow keys or just... any keybinding to 'move left/right/forward/back', they made the mouse like a god damn steering wheel. Moving the mouse left or right would rotate a compass on the bottom of your screen, then moving it up or down would move your hunter toward or opposite the direction of the compass. like... I didn't even interact with any NPCs, I went looking for an option to change this, couldn't figure out the japanese (and my translation software refused to even see it), and bailed.

As of this comment I've only gone about 1 hour into the video and let me just say this video is absolutely amazing! I started off watching this not really knowing that much about frontier but thanks to all the information that's been carefully put into this video...I feel as if I had played the game myself! I didn't realize just how much content had been thrown into this game especially over a period of time. Just...im speechless. Once more I cant thank you enough for posting this! Also I especially love the box art that is being shown off in each section, very nice! I'm totally going to zoom through the rest of this video and show it to some of my friends!
