I feel like I am being gaslit, because I have multiple very vivid and distinct memories of seeing Jho eat his own tail in solo hunts in Tri, and no. There were no popo, ludroth, aptanoth or anything else underneath the tail he would have been eating instead. I've lost carves to this guy eating his own tail. I got into the habit of mid-fight carving BECAUSE of Deviljho.

I, too, remember this vividly from as far back as monster hunter 3 tri. I stopped to watch it because it was the strangest thing I'd seen up to that point. No monsters nearby, no multi-player. Just a wild Jho. I, too, got in the habit of carving anything that dropped because of this guy. Though that was due to getting carted lol. For me the first time was area 5. Hell, he even shows it on the map there.

Mine was in tri also. Quropeco called him in and I fought both for awhile and I got his tail off, and after getting exhausted he eats it. I haven't seen anyone get a jho exhausted for this experiment.

He eat's other tails, just not it's own. In Tri or 3u (can't remember which), there is an even quest to hunt 2 deviljho. If you cut one of the rail of the 2 monster... There is a chance the other will eat it. (And yes this is confirmed true) The problem is, the jho that the tail was cut off from will never eat it.

My first time playing monster hunter world back in 2018 i was doing a quest in the wildspire waste, i dont remember what the quest was which could be an important part but i put it on gods life that i saw devilhjo pick his tail up in his jaws shortly after i severed it. It was in the center of the map where there is an landbridge and kestodons, however i never kill and and they were on the opposite side of the bride still cowering. What i do know for sure is that it was not a devilhjo quest and all i was trying to do was get a devilhjo material to try and see if it unlocked his armor for me to see. Believe it or don't the choice is yours, but i saw it happen, just not him gnawing at it like he does to pinned hunters or placed meat.

To be honest what I think happens is something about values. Let me explain: Monsterhunter has a carving mechanic right? One of the things you can carve is the tail and the tail contains valuable items to make better equipment. So what happened is that the devs didn't programmed deviljoh to eat its own tail since it would steal the loot from the players, making the fight unnecessarily difficult with the player trying to carve the tail and avoiding the attacks. So in the lore of MH deviljoh can and will eat its own tail for survival, but in gameplay the mechanic will be missing in order to give the player a better chance at completing the game and obtaining the loot from the monster. But hey I'm just a dauntless player, what do I know? I only know that electric behemoths go pew pew

I come from a Mandelian parallel universe where i can asure i saw Jo eats his own tail. Back when portable 3rd was first released, we were playing it with some friends, severed Jo's tail and there he went to eat it and leave no trace of it afterwards, we were pissed that we missed the carve. Considering the franchise is being watered down in complexity heavily now, I highly doubt we are every going to get cool monster mechanics like this in the game. I mean for the love of God cutting off a Rathian's tail doesn't even stop it from poisoning you God forbid change its hit box anymore. No way any cool one-off monster mechanics will be implemented. All they care about now is how many monsters they can fit onto the same modeling rig and reuse the same animations, but just change the model skin and flavor of element they attack with. If the idea doesn't decrease the budget for making the next game, they don't want to use it. Franchise is slowly going down a death spiral of removing complexity in favor of accessibility, to the point where the game loses any challenge in the early to mid game making that grind not just long but now also boring. In a series who's entire selling point is a sense of accomplishment of being a human that's hunting a monster, and through only skill can you overcome a fight in an world where size usually means you survive. Now you want me to slog through a few hundred quests JUST to get to a part of the game where hopefully it starts to become a challenge, where I actually can feel that sense of accomplishment I purchase the game and have been purchasing this franchise for almost 2 decades for? Yeah, no thanks. Im not going to waste HUNDREDS of hours of my time and life in a boring game to HOPEFULLY get to a part that MIGHT eventually be better; instead I'll just play something else that respects my time and is fun all the way through and from the start, made by a dev team that still gives a shit about the game they're making not just recycling the same game but worse in order to save money. Let's make the game easier and yet still grindy so that it's less fun, less memorable, and less rewarding. Great fucking idea Capcom.

Do I have footage, no. Have I seen him do it? Yes. I have actually never used tainted/poisoned/sleepy/paralyze meat because I am hyper aggressive and average monsters don't even get a chance to go eat anything. Back when I mained as a GS user and I ran solo I cut off his tail and a minute or so later he started mowing down on it. Either it's a rare occurrence since there's so many things for him to actually go eat or it could be a glitch in the coding

i saw it happen though, before i explain it i need to clarify something my first monster hunter game was 3 ultimate and the only interaction i had with the community was Projareds review video followed by me downloading the demo on my WiiU followed by me actually purchasing the game my first interaction with the deviljoe left me scared i never went in for direct combat with the deviljoe i was literally Phobic of the deviljoe so i would of had no idea that this debate was going on at the time. i went on a night time gathering of the island that village in single player mode is attached to (note: i was in single player mode) i was aiming to face my fear against the deviljoe ... then i managed to cut off it's tail ... then after i don't how many zone chases latter, we end up in the same zone the Deviljoe's tail was cut off ... then i saw it munching down on it's tail (it's tail disappeared as it was munching) which resulted in me just nopeing the fuck out. so if you ask me it's a 1 in a million chance and trying to manipulate the odds just makes it worse. just so you all know i am still phobic of the deviljoe and ever since that atement i haven't ever humored the idea of fighting the deviljoe 1 on 1 like i did in 3 ultimate i've always used multiplayer or avoided the mission entirely

I have a different experience that I was never able to recreate or find footage of. I was playing my first MH game. MHTri on the Wii and during a hunt with friends I was invaded by a Rathian which I was completely underleveled for and underskilled for because I was in the early game. I remember it legitimately picking me up in its mouth and swallowing me whole. I didn't even think of it as strange at the time because I was new to monster hunter it wasn't until playing later games that I realized how did I get swallowed if the game is designed to make you faint and then cart. Never found any footage of this animation after but I assume it may have been a failed pin animation. It's engrained into my memory due to it being my first encounter with Rathian ever.

I played monster hunter 1, didnt get far. When i got mh tri for the wii, i was able to play it much more seriously. I beat the game. I had ALL the armor. I had EVERY weapon. My first few times fighting him i distinctly remember the group cutting off his tail we had the exits to the zone trapped so he couldn't escape. He came down from his rage timer, walked over to his tail, did the eating animation and I could not obtain a carve after that. It seemed obvious enough to me at the time. I could have sworn it happened to me that one time. After that happened i made it a point to always carve the tail as soon as I had an opening.

I want to swear that once, ONE TIME, I've seen it happen. I recall panicking because I hadn't yet carved the tail. But, it was in multiplayer, so the client-side monster thing could have happened. If I recall, it was on Frozen Seaway in MH4U, zone 7, and he'd rotated back into the region to do it. But like... *how* would I confirm that anymore? Heck, is it even worth it? Double heck, am I misremembering? The emotion of concern certainly felt real. That was my tail! I cut it off fair and square! Neat video though. Now I will forever be watching for it.

@@BackroomBandit It's most likely other players were placing meat inside tail. I remember always placing meat Everytime Devil Jho went to a new zone back in MH3U. Many players did this. There was probably a portion of the MH community who would put it inside the tail and so people saw it happen and now nobody can replicate it because the players who were doing it aren't playing MH3U anymore.

The part you brought up at the end with the client side small monsters is actually really interesting. When me and a friend of mine were trying to get it to happen in GU, there was a moment where we were clearing out velociprey so they wouldn't interfere, and he was attacking one that was nowhere near him on my screen. I think this perfectly explains why so many people swear they've seen it, they technically have, it was just an illusion created by multiplayer desyncing instead of natural, intended behaivor.

Like in a multi hunt quests a monsters corpse will despawn after a set amount of time and at the same moment the tail despawns, too. You know, mentioning small monster desync actually gives me an idea. What happens if the host kills a small monster and has it land on top of the tail on his screen? For other players, the small monster will be elsewhere, so where does Deviljho go to eat in that instance? Plus, when Deviljho eats something, you become unable to carve it, right? What happens when Jho is visually far away from the thing that it's eating? Does it cancel the carves of the small monster miles away, or does it cancel the carves of the thing closest to Jho? This is no longer about eating the tail, but there are mysteries still to be solved...
