Crunchyroll Disables Comments Permanently to Censor Community and They Replaced Translators with AI

Crunchyroll has gotten themselves into quite the mess today with disabling their entire sites comment section to censor the community. Then they replaced translators with AI for their newest anime like My Deer Friend Nokotan. This has been an ongoing story in the anime community for years now and Asmongold made more people aware of it.

😞 comment gave me warnings for the show so i can prepare like sound, content warning, flashing etc without spoiling show. Community was oddly good for that plus letting people know more after credits/ending song

To me it sounds like someone who owns the property that Crunchyroll streams wanted this and who Crunchyroll tasked with it saw the easy solution of comment out the line that is the class to allow a comment section. It will get rid of all the comment sections for all of them but it is the quickest and easiest way to do it for the one the IP holder wants it done one. Now how to do it for only the episodes or only the series the IP holder wants it done on is more complicated and requires writing new code to check if the video being played is the video file that the IP holder wants to not have a comment section. In short a programmer took the quick way instead of the correct way and now Cruncyroll doesn't have a comment section which it seems was seen by PR saw as a good thing as no comment section means they cannot write something to say bad things about Crunchyroll and Legal saw it as a good thing as no comment section means people cannot write something onto their site that Cruncyroll can get sued over.

Whenever I hear a company say "it's for YOUR safety" immediate red flag. It's not for us, it's always for them. They could care less about us. This is for their bottom line. Maybe you missed a huge detail. Maybe someone has a cool theory about how the story is going. Or maybe you just want to see how the community felt about a controversial event in the episode... or maybe you realize you are are the only one that thought it was bullshit and everyone else loved it. Regardless, diving into the comments section was something I did after EVERY episode to soak in/process what I just watched. Even when binging a completed series I always dip my toes in to see what everyone else thought. Stripping that away just makes watching feel... empty.

KissAnime was killed off a while ago and a lot of clone sites popped up over the years, but they are riddled with trojans and malware and the clone sites' library of anime is no where as robust as the old KissAnime website had. The original KissAnime had a vast library of anime dating back to early 1980s of even old and lost anime that can't be found easily anymore in 2024. It's quite sad really. In the past 4 years since 2020, the internet has just crumbled even more.

I actually think the subbing mistakes come from them trying to always rush episodes for a lot of shows out at the last minute. I don't care if a human or ai writes the subs, but please sync them properly... As for recap skips, well, they're only ever on the newest series of the latest season. If they get Robotech: The Macross Saga in their library for example for the season it won't ever have a skip function but the latest shonen/Isekai might. That's what I'm always seeing.

CR has been around since 2006 and it was created as an Anime video hosting site that doubled as a social community where people could interact via forums and other social features the site offered. CR also went legit in 2010-2011 when they started streaming legally, Naruto, Bleach and One Piece among other popular Battle Shonen at the time. I've been using CR since the very beginning so I've seen it go through every stage.

It means they can drastically change things without community or subscriber input. They're too lazy and cheap to hire actual moderators. They've also removed reviews. I've been saved countless times from a bad show because I would read reviews saying it fell off hard after the first 1-3 eps. Kingdom of Ruin, Ninja Kamuy, and Unnamed Memory are 3 examples off the top of my head that I dropped cause the REVIEWS mentioned they fell off hard and to not get invested.

I've been using crunchyroll since 2015, and I have hardly ever seen any comments that I would deem "harmful". Most of the time, it's just people gushing about particularly cool and memorable moments. Even the reviews are actually helpful cause many times I'll be saved from wasting my time on bad shows thanks to reviews. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to . I hate pirating because I feel bad doing so. With older Anime that I like that are out of print or no longer available on streaming services , it makes not pirating difficult. If I'm able to find the D.V.D's for said Anime, I'll definitely buy them. I try my best to watch legally if I'm able to. Sometimes I'm left to sail the seven seas myself with certain Anime. Some Anime I like never got a official release here in the states.

Although not the main reason, a big reason for me even using Crunchyroll over other websites, was the the comments section. It made me feel like a part of the community for that particular show and would allow for discussions about each episode. Now that those are gone, and so are reviews so that I can't get a gist of how good a show is, I think I'm just about done with this website, and I will be moving onto better options.

I think AI has a place in translation. Not so much as replacing but as a way for translators to speed up the process. Like they put the lines through AI, then a human looks over the AI's work and double checks it. There will be people who lose their jobs as in this case not as many translators are needed. But there would still be a human element.
