I always wondered why pirate sites were allowed to just freely exist to this degree. Now it makes a lot more sense. I thought official companies were using pirate sites as a proxy information gathering point for possible localization, but I’d have never thought they would be this directly connected.

Any pirate thinking they're fighting corpos by pirating content and that corpos don't know about pirate sites are very much deluded, I would think the fact that multiple pirate sites where almost instantly taken down after the Netflix leak would have shown that but apparently not. Corps, especially big anime producers and distributers like Sony, via Aniplex, and Kadokawa, don't care about pirate sites because it would be too much of a hassle to actually try to take them down and they only actually bother doing so when the site gets too big or does something dumb like upload unaired episodes of anime like with the Netflix leak.
