The anime was actually originally intended to have been animated in 2D, and most of it was done too. But at the very last minute, the director had made the awful decision to switch to 3DCG instead causing the entire production to be thrown out of whack. This was the result.

As time passes, the frame widens, allowing the other characters space. As the frame widens more and more, more and more characters are added to the shot. I feel like it symbolizes Guts slowly opening up to others after the events of The Golden Age arc. He's not ready to let go of his rage or desire for revenge, but he's not willing to let go of his connection to others, either.
