Yuri Katsuki carried the hope of all Japan on his shoulders in the Figure Skating Grand Prix, but suffered a crushing defeat in the finals. He returned to his hometown in Kyushu and hid away in his family's home, half wanting to continue skating and half wanting to retire. That was when the five-time consecutive world champion, Victor Nikiforov, suddenly showed up with his teammate, Yuri Plisetsky, a young skater starting to surpass his seniors. I remember reading that each character in the series was animated by a different team so they would look different, even though all but one were modeled on the same male skater. (Yurio's model was female).

Fun fact: Yurio’s model is Yulia Lipnitskaya, who I believe won the Olympics when she was 15! Look up her free skate from what I believe was 2014(?) it was based on the Schindler’s List and is absolutely amazing. She doesn’t compete anymore because of an injury and severe anorexia, but she was absolutely amazing.

Also - this just occurred to me, and be patient with me because it's just a theory - at the point when the story begins, Victor is polished, a "finished product". An athlete and artist everyone looks up to. Yuuri and Yurio are in "rougher" stages of the competitive careers, so maybe this is why their animation appears less polished than Victor's?

I’m revisiting this anime after a lot of change in my life. I watched this anime during a really special and unsure point in my older childhood and now I’ve completely changed.
