*The Evening Before the Battle of Läckö* "End this folly, dearest brother, and return home," said Tord, his soft and somber tone belying his giant stature. He leaned forward in his chair, the wood creaking under his massive musculature, concern wrinkling around his bright blue eyes. "You plunge Sweden into war. Kinsmen killing kinsmen. You even threatened His Majesty's daughters... King Arnbjorn is a good man. Soft, but good. And you have broken him. The wolves are baying. They have gathered around Sweden and are salivating at the chance to oppress us once more, to undo all that Duchess Ylva did in her life. Mother gave everything to make this land and our people strong, to make us pleasing to the gods. She would not have wanted this. Please, my big brother, end this." Orvar winced as his massive younger brother called him "big brother." Even when the lad was but 12 and Orvar a man grown, Tord towered over him. Orvar still remembered a feast from back in those days. Orvar and Tord had been standing next to each other, and Count Valdemar had loudly proclaimed "Look at the little big brother!" Orvar could still feel the heat in his cheeks and the dryness in his throat as the whole court had laughed at him. "Ah, come on, lad, it was just a joke!" Valdemar had guffawed, clapping him hard on the back. Orvar remembered looking to his Mother, for her to step in or to say something, but she would not even meet his eye, instead turning to talk to the person next to her... Orvar both loved and hated Tord. The love had been there from the start, from the day that big-headed, blond baby had entered Midgard. But the hate... the hate had been born that day. Sucking in his cheeks, Orvar shook his head and steepled his long, willowy fingers. "I spent my whole life trying to do what Mother wanted. Years, decades, living in her shadow. My entire youth wandering the entire country, killing and maiming men in duels so that she might finally recognize me. Decades pushing her papers and administering her lands, while the two of you raided and adventured together..." Orvar trailed off, his voice breaking at the end. Tord reached across the small table and clasped his brother's hand in his own. "She loved you, Orvar. Dearly. And she was proud of you. It's just... Mother knew what she was. She knew how much she overshadowed every man she stood next to. Literally and metaphorically. And so many men resented her for it, hated her for it. So many felt shamed by her mere presence. Why do you think she had so many husbands after father?" Tord chuckled and took a sip from his drink. Then his tone became serious once more, "And her biggest fear, dearest brother, was for you to see her that way. She wanted to give you the space to become your own man. Seek your own destiny." Scoffing, Orvar pulled his hand away. He picked up his tankard of mead, and though he sloshed it around idly, he did not drink. "You're a terrible liar. She was ashamed of me. It never mattered how many duels I won, how many rebellions I quashed in their infancy while she reaved, and hunted, and battled, and bonded with you. I shamed her. My life wasted chasing affection from a woman who did not know how to give it back. I will not forgo my destiny any longer for the sake of that woman. Besides, you did what she wanted, and look at you. Nothing but a petty duke of a backwater island." Tord Gren bristled, "I was happy to serve. Am happy to." Orvar sneered across the table. "Then you are a fool, Tord. Gods damn it! Look at yourself. A giant of a man, the greatest warrior in the realm, a warrior worthy of Thor himself, descended from the most powerful woman who ever walked Scandinavia. And here you come, like a beaten bitch, to plead the case for a man whose head you could rip off, a man softer than even the softest of Christians. You could have been the best of us. You should have." He looked deeply at his brother, and for a brief moment there was a feeling of genuine fondness between the men. "Join me," whispered Orvar. "What is Arnbjorn to you but distant cousin? You are blood of my blood. Join me. Lead my armies, our house's armies! Foster Johan, make him strong like you. Like Mother. Please, Tord." A tear rolled down Tord's cheek. "I love you with all my heart, Orvar... But I cannot. Mother would not-" The table flipped, untouched mead and dinner crashing all over the floor as Orvar leaped to his feet and flung over the small table that had been laid out between the two sons of Duchess Ylva. "Do what Mother told you like a good little boy, then! A now it falls on me to secure the legacy of our family and our people! Don't you see? I have to do this. Now begone, I have heard enough from you! Begone from my tent!" His chest heaved and spittle flew from his mouth. His clenched fists shook. Tord had not stirred one inch during his brother's rage. Now, he wiped the tears away from his eyes, slowly got to his feet, and paced past his brother out of the tent, giving him a deferential nod as he passed. However, he stopped at the door, and without turning around, spoke a final time. "Do not look for me on the field, Orvar. I will not search for you, but if you come into my path... I will kill you." Orvar swallowed nervously, and hoped Tord did not hear. And then wiped away a tear of his own.

I've found that in CK3 I am much more likely to run a deficit with my army raised. I've found it is just easier to build up a war chest between wars and then blow through cash during the conflict rather than trying to have the infrastructure to support the massive armies you need for kingdom or empire scale warfare. The difficulty of getting to primogeniture also plays into this because you can lose so much on inheritance, and counties that were once big producers often end up going to a different child.
@carlhoellein66724 жыл бұрын
Fabricating claims on vassals to revoke without tyranny pretty much solves problems of good counties going away. For the most part I like how this game strips players of primogeniture, but provides many ways to work around it.
@iancrane57054 жыл бұрын
I really hate primogeniture being locked away so deep into the tech tree. Maybe it's just me but I hate being forced to micromanage claims throughout the entire game. CK2 just let it be an option (i.e. don't move inheritance away from gavelkind). But with CK3 you just have to do it
@thehulkster94344 жыл бұрын
@@iancrane5705 I'm not sure on it myself. It does force a different play style though. I've been conquering like a madman every time a ruler dies to try to continue to have decent counties to draw taxes from. It's probably been the single greatest driver that led me from the Sahara to conquering India. CK2 sometimes was a bit too easy to force your way on. That said, I would not be surprised if inheritance laws get overhauled in a future expansion.

Tord was the true son of Ylva While his scheming brother cowered in his castle profiting off his commanders hard work, Tord was on the front lines defending his king against his own brother ripping off the heads of his childhood friends for his king and the realm. What a legend.
@thomaskole98814 жыл бұрын
But Tord, like a true warrior, was able to admit defeat when he had to. As such he bowed his head to the rightful ruler: Orvar of house Gren, first of his name, king of Sweden and protector of the faith, by the will of Odin.

My story is that Orvard always knew that Ylva loved Tord more. He ran about dueling people to prove to mom that he could be a good fighter too, even if he wasn't a giant berserker. But it was never enough, so he focused on the one trait he had over his perfect little brother, cunning. Honeyed words to his mother about how great Iceland is and how it'd be another great duchy to add to the family line cleared the path to his goal of power and influence. He tortured and murdered and fought against his instincts in pursuit of his lofty ambitions. Finally his beloved mother died, his brother gone to Iceland. All the most prosperous territories firmly within his grasp, Orvard could finally set his sights on the only way to finally make his mother love him: Accomplish the only thing she couldn't, become king. Never realizing, unlike Tord, that it wasn't that Ylva couldn't, she just didn't want to.

Here's one for things Jon got wrong, it's not your men at arms you can't afford, it's your levies.
@ModernWhoFan5B4 жыл бұрын
So Jon, about that whole "being suspicious about marches because it looks too good to be true"... It's actually true. In fact, all the Special contracts have bonuses for the vassal, and they can be used as bargaining chips for other things. Scutage reduces the cost at Men-at-Arms in exchange for fewer levies and higher taxes, and palatinate reduces the vassals taxes and levies, and makes the vassal extremely popular with other vassals of the same liege. March is arguably the best though- less taxes to the man, and more troops for you.

Loving this series ❤️ You could enforce all the hooks and get all the money and the stress could kill the crappy king in favor of the young hot one?

So would it be worth it for him to shut off monthly reinforcement? It costs him around 30 gold per month, what exactly does it do?
@charlesbaldwin31664 жыл бұрын
It reinforces the men at arms when they are below strength. It's a desperation move but I've done the equivalent move in CK2 a few times.

Okay something strange has happened and I blame you Jon, you silly lil egg you. I never was into CK or any of the Paradox games or grand strategy games in general and syraight up only used these hour long CK videos as white noise to fall asleep to, literally left comments about that on the other CK videos. But. BUT, about 4 days ago I felt this random urge to play CK3. I can't explain it but that's legit what happened and I ended up buying it and played through the tutorial and was left super confused and I have no idea what I'm doing but I keep itching to go back. What in the self hypnosis is this bullshit? It's like that one episode of friends where Chandler tried to quit smoking listening to tapes and ended up turning into a strong independent woman

There are plenty of ck3 videos out there to help you with concepts and how to do stuff. You'll spend many hours watching and playing.

Jon, if you can get your kingdom level war in before you die you should definitely do that. Might need to push for prestige though

It's painful to watch how Jon manages his armies. For the love of God, Jon, put on your war-glasses! Rorek is doing all the work because he is literally THE ONLY CHAMPION IN YOUR WHOLE ARMY, Jon!

Jon, are you not aware that you can change the clerical tradition to "lay clergy"? This allows you to hold temple holdings and make yourself the head of faith. It's very powerful.

It's not your men-at-arms that are costing you the most money, it's your levies. If you look at the army tab, you'll notice your raised levies are costing you around 15 gold per month. If you split them off and disband them, you'll have a higher quality army made up of only men-at-arms, and it won't cost you nearly as much money. Then if they're led by Tord, they'll dominate everyone.

Jon, you do realise you can siege multiple castles at the same time? They barely have any garrison. Just pull off 250 levies and your doom stack can go off starve itself out of supplies anywhere you want. You dont have to waste 4 months sitting 7k troops on a castle with barely 250 dudes inside throwing insults at you. Which brings me to the second point, supplies... Just split that army in two for goodness sake and you'll never have to worry about it, low supplies lower advantage (including duels - remember all those heads ripped off? they didnt have to be ripped off), not to mention attrition.
@KaimArgonarEyyyy2 жыл бұрын
Jon should split his armies in half more often when there are too many cocking enemies causing trouble all over the place. An overwhelming force of 6000 is a bit overkill when you could just have two armies take care of two problems at the same time.

Love how you spent all this time to this point making sure Asatru Champions are invincible, an making sure your family are all genetic killing machines, then you inherit as a weaker human member of your family and go to war with the actual strong giant berserker side of your family who have inherited the throne of sweden so have all the buffs you have and wonder why all your champions got shredded,cant wait till i play this game though Jon makes it look fun, watched a guy who literally paid no attention to the characters or stories just played it like total war and took over the world in 1 or 2 generations it was one of the most boring things to watch on youtube, being a strong count or duke and just pulling the strings behind the scenes without trying to take over the world looks like alot more fun, with the perks and religious features added the mods to this are going to be brilliant
