Also in the mythology, both Loki and Þórr (Thor) have mothers who are/were giants or a Jotun. Thor's mother has one of the 3 names in the myths; Jörd, (Old Norse: “Earth”, ) also called Fjörgyn, or Hlódyn; mean while Loki's mother shared two names: Laufey/Nál. I don't know about you but to me for both Orvar and Tord to have a mother who was a Giant seems to be outstandingly cool. Some of my own tips for the game: 1 - Stats are more important than alliances AND vassals. With a bit of marrying effort (involving all our court, not just your family) and the special "find character" feature of the game, you can bring in extremely high stat people (25+) through marriage, to your court, and fill in all your councilman positions. Make sure all the people you bring in are age 30 or below, think long term investment. 2 - Got money problems in feudal regime? No problem, go over to the Stewardship tree and pick up Golden Obligations level 1 perk. Make sure to fill in your spymaster position with a 25+ (it's pretty easy to get a 30 with a bit of work) person (there are tons of high stat non-noble people out there to be obtained). Then you can go around the nearby courts outside your kingdom, and just put your spymaster on constant "find secrets" duty. Every 3-4 months you should be getting a secret, which you can blackmail into a hook, most of the times a strong hook, which can then be used to "demand payment" from the person you got the hook on. The funny thing is that you only take a minor rep hit on the blackmail phase, but then you don't take rep hits every time you demand payment, and with a strong hook, you can demand payment from a person every 5 years. And let's just say the payments start at 50g and range all the way above 100. In a couple of decades of doing this you'll be making so much gold it will break the game. Literally thousands of gold by just blackmailing everyone at a cost of a minor rep hit. 3 - Did I mention not wasting your councilmen slots on shitty vassals or low quality people?? I can't stress that enough, personally I consider the entry level stat 25+ anything below that is just a placeholder, I call them "the interns" while I work to obtain someone else. Aside from greatly improving the hard results of whatever a councilman is assigned to work on, if you look at whatever job you assign a councilman you will notice there's a list of positive and also negative events that might occur. That list and the chances of those events to occur is based on that councilor's stat in its specific area. If you run someone with bad stats, bad random shit will happen, if you run someone with 20+ stats, you will notice there are no more negative events at all, and not just that but the good events are more often. Multiply that with all your councilor positions, and it has a major impact on your game, on all counts. So why would you trade all of that away just so that one of your vassal has +20 with you instead of -20? Often my vassals are -40 or more all the time and I don't give a shit, and with someone with +25 diplomacy doing rounds all the time, it will nullify the bad rep easily. 4 - Take the time to scroll through the baby character lists every few years and bookmark the babies you're interested in. You will be able to find genius, beautiful and amazonian underage females early on, especially the non-noble ones. Plan your breeding strategy early, with a bit of effort you can "build" beautiful and intelligent/genius heirs at an early age. The stat boosts you get are insane and stats in this game are the most important thing. Keep in mind that the AI will look for quality stats too but the AI will favor alliances which means that any children with amazing traits will get betrothed early on, BUT, non-noble children will not be of any interest to the AI until the age of 16 when they can have babies and actually bring a benefit to the AI, which leaves all this quality genetic material to be had. Keep in mind that in a christian religion, you can still have a woman to fill your spymaster position, which means that just by searching for a female spymaster, you will highly increase your chances of finding an exceptional one (I run 30+ on my spymasters almost all the time) simply because male characters have a much higher demand and thus less availability int he global pool. 5 - Most of the time, unless it's your char or your wife, all-rounded stats are useless. When looking for people think what role you want them to fill, and go search for characters and order down by that stat. If you're looking for a knight, you only care about their prowess, they can have 1 at every other stat for all you care, it doesn't matter. If you're looking for a steward, get someone that has 25+ stewardship, they can have 1 in every other stat, again it doesn't matter. All rounded stats are useless, unless it's you or your wife. 6 - Alliances suck! They do. Seriously. You should be very careful who you get allied to, and you should aim to NOT be allied to anyone unless you really need to. Alliances will always drag you into wars and throw wrenches in your politics and long term plans, they will cost you money (to participate in wars), and there's literally no way to benefit out of them, If you refuse to participate in a war you will loose tons of influence, if you do participate you pay for the army upkeep and you waste time fighting for something that's not in your grand scheme of things, and if you agree to join a war and you don't show up then you loose even more influence. If you breed your dynasty properly you will have dynasty dukes and even kings that you will be able to call into your wars (as the dynasty head) and you won't owe them any obligation. Also, situations change over time, you might ally yourself with some dude that has a 3k army and think you're in a good position, only to find that the idiot, because you're allied with him, thinks he's a big shot now, and then he goes on declaring war on a stronger enemy, because he factors in your numbers into his military might, and then you're fucked because no matter what you do, you come out loosing out of it, and if you don't help him, he's gonna get himself steamrolled and probably a few years down the line you'll be stuck in an alliance with someone that has a shit 500 troops and no economy, and keeps leeching value off of you, and the only way to get out of the alliance is to murder someone. Really bad! 7 - Plan your death. If you're 50+, do NOT give the vassals that love you increased taxes with "protected". You might think it's a good idea, and then you die, your heir takes your place, that 90+ loving vassal is now a -100 because short reign, he has a claim on your title, wants council position, and has high taxes. And you can't renegotiate your contract cause it's already been changed, and you can't revoke his contract cause he's protected. And you're stuck with a vassal that will constantly try to undermine you, create factions against you, and/or work against you. Plan long term and after the age of 50, you should have all your shit in place ready for a succession. Oh and don't forget to spend all your money and influence. Each character has their own money so it does you absolutely no good if you die with 1000g in your vault, that money could go into infrastructure and be of a benefit long term rather than wasted. Goes for influence and piety too.

King Orvar actually lasted way longer than I thought we would considering his starting age and health. The man lived to take over Sweden and lasted long enough to avoid a baby king. Well done. Shame about the spider though, damn that court physician. Couple things I thought I ought to mention that I learned from my own Norse playthrough Jon. 1. I'm not sure where you are culture tech wise right now, but make sure to check out the development level of your core territory (Capital County and the rest of it's De Jure Dutchy counties). If they haven't already been buffed up as high as it'll go according to tech limits, it's HIGHLY advisable to switch your Steward (even if he's terrible) to increasing development there instead of general tax collection. You'll get LOADS more money in the long run from the percentage based increases in taxes as that number goes up. Tax collection is only really worth it if you either invest lifestyle perks into it, or have already converted your territory's culture and finished increasing your territory's development to the current cultural tech's soft cap. 2. Development level doesn't only lead to mountains of gold and piles of troops in your future ruler's pockets, it's also the only thing you can work on to speed up how quickly cultural tech is researched. (The value of the monthly increase you are always dicerolling on is based on average development level of that culture's counties). If you ever want to escape gavelkind succession and catch up to the mainland's soon to be superior men at arms, you'll NEED to get the average development level up sooner rather than later. 3. You don't necessarily need to devote a ruler's whole life to learning in order to get some fantastic progress via cultural tech. Dipping your toes into the middle scholar tree unlocks the HUGE fascination boost perk (if you are the cultural head at least), a big buff to the 'increase development in county' steward task that I previously mentioned, and a huge learning buff that gives you 2 learning per level of devotion. (+10 max) With just those three perks you'll HUGELY increase the rate your tech advances and can just swap lifestyle back over to whatever else you want afterwards as those three perks are the only ones that influence this stuff in the whole lifestyle. (scholar itself will help a bit more but requires the completion of the WHOLE tree)

Did... did Jon remade The Bachelor in crusder kings?

You disinherited him by making him your realm priest. If you put someone else in that position, your other son will inherit again. Realm priests can ONLY inherit temples. Thus, he cannot inherit your realm. I say disinherit the kid with no traits, and change out your realm priest. Better heir made simple!

Well, historically when Sweden had a king named Johan, it didn't go great.. Let's hope history is kinder in CK for this king Johan of Sweden. I vote that he should be known as King Johan the fairhaired.. :D

Why would you ever give a vassal protection from revocation? You couldve forced them to live under Partition by contract forever, thats worth more than any taxes

Is there an empire in Scandinavia because it could be useful if you take over the kingdom of Norway as well as Sweden.

You could go for 'Found a new Empire' and become Emperor of Scandinavia.

He doesn't need to found it. At this point, he just needs to invade Norway and he can reform Scandinavia.

What's to say you can't do both? Form Scandinavia, and marry the Queen of England. When it all passes to your child, boom, you now have a mighty North Sea Empire. It's the Norse way. Go big, or go home.
