If you put those expensive cameras into the chamber in a steel box you may use a ~45° mirror right before the optics to make the opening on the steel case look 90° away from the source of explosion. That way the shrapnel can hit a cheap mirror but not the camera, while the setup maintains good visual quality. Object \ =========|| \ camera || \ =========||

Yep this is the way. Best orientation is to have the camera looking down at the mirror. That way you have gravity ensuring everything will fall away from the camera rather than toward it.

Hello! Love your channel, watch the videos regularly. As an automotive technician I've been using presses for 40 years now. I've had a couple bearings blow up trying to install them but haven't taken any shrapnel so far. I've gotten more careful as I age. :) The first piece that you tried to crush that barrelled out but didn't fail - if you still have that one maybe try putting it on it's side and giving it a crush that way. It won't be as strong on it's side and the first attempt should have hardened it nicely so you might get an interesting failure. And depending on how you orient it you might be able to "aim" the shrapnel.... Keep up the good work! Ward

Great video but I think the old press was better at exploding things because it bended more due to the press force. That way it build up more energy in the frame. How about adding a mechanical spring which elastically deflects 20 mm at 300 ton? Or adding a hydraulic accumulator connected with a very thick hose and a valve so you can adjust the springiness / explodiness of the press. I think it would be much more dangerous, and that is what you want in the bunker. And could you put the part which didn't explode in the lathe to decrease the wall thickness and press again?

8:42 Copper does work harden. For example you can take a soft copper tube and form it into a bend, but if you keep trying to reshape the bend the copper gets hard. You can heat it to glowing red with a torch to soften it (annealing). I can't explain why brass is more explosive. Perhaps it deforms more before it fractures so it can store more energy, or maybe it's the relationship of stress, strain and elongation? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_hardening#Copper

A conservation of energy test would be fun to see! Work = force x distance So the heat energy of the material should be nearly the same as the energy applied by the press. So if you know the specific heat and temperature of the material, you can calculate how much energy went into it.

I think a large screen attached to a Camara inside will be much cheaper than bulletproof glass. Sulfer content can help with fractility...at least it does for iron. You should try cast iron... And finally, you have such beautiful scrap. Get a foundry for melting metal from vevor. You can cast interesting things for the show and for repairs. Paired with a 3d printer for sand casting...Finland is indestructible.

@cleon_teunissen
@cleon_teunissen 3 ай бұрын
When work hardening is cumulative then subdividing in stages won't make much difference. To undo workhardening a proces called 'annealing' must be applied. Annealing reverses the changes of hardening. Most metals and alloys require heat treatment to achieve annealing. I expect the same goes for brass. There are metals however, that have annealing happening at ambient temperature. For instance, the metal Lead is an example of such a material. With lead work hardening doesn't accumulate. That is one of the reasons that sheets of lead are used for waterproofing roofs. With most metals, when you bend a sheet a couple of times the metal is work hardened. The metal becomes brittle, and after bendng a couple of times the sheet metal will start to crack. Lead however, can be worked and reworked, without the lead becoming brittle.

The "set force" parameter on the display you show seems to be set at 270, so I think the max it'll do is 270. I noticed it in a previous video too. If you set that to 300 will you get the full force of the press or do you have to keep that set lower than 300 for safety?
