Fun fact: its common practice to use thermite to burn a tank if you have to abandon it during a battle so that when the enemy claim the tank, all they actually get is some partially melted scrap metal
@adamb89
@adamb89 8 ай бұрын
Yep, and the difference between a thermite grenade and a thermate grenade is thermite is designed primarily for antimateriel purposes as you said, while thermate is better used for incendiary munitions due to its explosive properties. Matter of fact, that's what their grenades were made of...thermate. Not thermite. Thermate contains an oxidizer. Edit: The bucket is even labeled "Thermate."

Loved that propane tank going up! People don't appreciate just how much is actually in those things. Something like this is a pretty impressive demonstration of just how much energy is there. Honestly, this reminded me of images from 1991 when Saddam Hussein lit the southern Iraqi oilfields on fire to prevent their capture during the Gulf War. Those runaway oil wells shot flames into the sky just like this. Those ones had to be carefully extinguished and capped with huge amounts of concrete. This one, fortunately, will just burn itself out.

It's actually worse if the tank barrel doesn't melt through, that means all the molten iron is now welded to the inside and blocking the barrel.
@LightbringerDesigns
@LightbringerDesigns 7 ай бұрын
I came here to say this; also, if the Bad Guys don't know you did that, when they try to use it again, first shot they try to fire hits that lump welded to the inside - if the design is intelligent, there would be a plug outside the turret to blow off first & relieve the pressure if the barrel is obstructed. Otherwise, all those propellant gasses will blow back into the turret. Sounds like a Very Bad Day.

The molten steel left in the end of the tank barrel probably wouldn't cause the barrel to rupture. However, that intense heat inside the barrel kills the metal's heat treatment and weakens it to the point it MAY fail. When it comes to disabling artillery and big guns, troops usually go for the transverse mechanism or the breach. Thermite grenades do wonders on those. Getting one on a tank's engine deck can kill a tank, too.

Since most of your igneous forces are being wasted on the open atmosphere, have you ever tried igniting it from the bottom of the cannister? It seems to stand as as a reasonable method by which to increase the efficacy of your efforts. I am only guessing, but I believe it might be worth a trial attempt. Separated layers of base material might be useful as a test medium, much like wooden barriers are used for bullet penetration tests, but indexed to the vertical. Good video, thanks.

If you have access to someone who knows chemistry, you can replace part of the thermite mix with plaster of paris(calcium sulfate) and make a castable thermite. The ratios have to be right to make the chemistry right, but you can also change the amount of plaster to control the burn speed. We made a high plaster shell and filled it with a faster burning(low plaster) version that gave us a sort of 'shaped charge' that would considerate the heat in one spot and consume it'self completely over time. Maybe you can have fun with this idea.
