Beware of the Greeks bearing Gifts.....Bharat has had many scholars documenting the same but were ignored. How conveniently we forget! Sugriva had talked about these journeys when he was describing the pathways to search for Sita to the Vanara army....during the last ice age! Nilesh Oak on Sugriva's Atlas comes to mind. These journeys are far more ancient than what Dalrymple wants to acknowledge, with the much used sweeping statement of "no need to use mythology" trope! So it shouldn't be surprising to anyone that the Bharatiyar culture, knowledge and civilisation had spread that far and beyond! There was an ancient civilisational nation called Bharat since ancient times! The problem with western scholars are they cannot get out of their biblically brainwashed concept of civilisational datum begun 2000 years or so. Their universally indoctrinated scholarship edicts that anything beyond that datum must not be true nor accepted. Bharat was navigating the ancient seas because they already cracked the longitudes and latitudes way before anyone as documented in the Surya Siddhantha which is very much older than 11,000 years, The ancient civilisation was very much Dharmic and the concept of yoga was already established. Yoga allowed the flourishing of the human mind and creativity bloomed! There was no need of organised religion as freedom of thought was encrypted into the Bharatiyars DNA and civilisation! Samkhya philosophy predates Siddharta the prince who only reestablished it as societal decay was eating up the civilisation. Buddhism as a new religion only became vogue very much later.

I have to disagree with the point made at 22:00. India WAS united many times during its history. Where the idea and assumption comes that India wasn't united is beyond me. I mean did England during the time of the Normans ever assume that their country was called England in the first place?

India is a Civilisational country. Britain is not. Britain is just part of the civilisation of Europa/ Germanic origins. Difference is stark. But all of that including Europe Greek Latin Persia Egypt Mesopotamia China etc etc are born out of Indian Civilisation. India is the mother of all cultures. Kailash Mount is the Never Centre of Earth in terms of Civilisation.

In Indian tradition, all Gurus were welcomed and followed them. We didnt call them a seperate religion, we called them another tradition. Before Budha there was Jainist movement. Infact, Budha was considered 10th Avatar of Vishnu. Budhism is another view of Hinduism and not a different religion. Thats a complete nonsense

There were no Roman coins found in China, because, the Chinese brought silk, etc, to India from where they were taken to Egypt by Indian ships . Indian merchants took gold in payments which were shared with the Chinese merchants back in India. Therefore, there was no need for the Chinese to take or carry Roman coins back home.

Hence, the video is named ancient, i was expecting 5k to 10k years old analysis. At that time, current india was very rich in all aspects. How to embarrass a centrist historian in the guise of interview? Inject Hindutva terminology into his broad descriptions, seize him by the 'colonial' collar, ignore his pained nuances, brush aside his protests, finally co-opt him into the "Modiji got us the indic freedom in 2014" brigade...😂 This will go down as a master class!

We can shut it once we start producing and publishing works from our own authors and make a big solid library of such books. Until we do that, let us not shun any foreigner who is doing it. Otherwise we will have a situation where we do nothing ourselves but also shun the people others to do it as well. The net result is zero publication on the subject. Who loses ? It is Indians and no one else. The foreigner can easily go and find other interesting subjects to write on.

His book extols Buddhism while belittling Hinduism. He says Hindus never had the great art that Buddhism enabled. Anything about Hinduism is described as Brahmin ruled & Vedic animal sacrifices. He talks about rice, bananas & coconuts brought to India from south east Asia! How is all this to be accepted w/o a debate with Hindus? Hindus should read Bhaskar Kambles book on Hindu mathematics to understand how Dalrymple’ ancestors in Britain took great care to bury Hindu discoveries in every subject!

I think this is a wonderful enjoyable interview because William Dalrymple is a good writer & even better chatty & engaging guest. I believe he is a bit too dismissive about the oral history & information within the ancient Ramayan & other myths , tales ,ballads, poetry of India. After all the Greek myths & legend's inspired the locating & eventual excavations of archaeological evidence & proofs in Greece & their civilisations in the 18th/19 centuries, funded privately by amateurs who devoted themselves to the detective work !!!! Dalrymple says he didnt expect such interest in the book. That shows that hes unaware of India & Indians have suffered cultural & intellectual appropriation of its achievements because of imperial colonialists & invaders precisely because of its riches . Its the only ancient civilisation still alive & survived against the odds. Its obvious that he knows masses more . Hes doing a great job . I hope he writes best seller after best seller as new tools & fresh minds have barely scratched the surface of what is hidden away.
