Why Russia's Hypersonic Missile Zircon Has To "Slow Down" To Strike Moving Targets Like Ships

A British think-tank has pointed out a very common problem in Russia’s recently deployed Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles. The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) claims that while the Zircon missile is a powerful weapon, it also has major limitations. On Jan. 4 Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu attended a ceremony to deploy the new missile. Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov sailed to the Atlantic Ocean, loaded with Tsirkon (Zircon) and Kalibr missiles. The deployment of Russia’s new hypersonic cruise missiles drew a good deal of international attention. However, analysts have raised some red flags regarding Russia's latest flagship missile. The plasma is a big problem for missle during hipersonic speeds of Mach 20. It's entirely engulfed by plasma like a meteor, nothing passes through no communication with satellite guidance, nothing . Missles in those speeds are "blind and deaf", they need to reduce their speed to supersonic in order to navigate and hit a target with precission and for hypersonic missle to slowing down to supersonic speed is getting vulnerable and is not doing much better than any other existing supersonic missle in evading air defence systems.

Zircon is maneuverable, and air defenses will have little time to deal with after the scramjet engine is separated, but there will always be a chance to destroy it.

The Americans don't use Hypersonic missile's or recommend them at all in most attacks. They use other ballistic missiles better suited for the mission because of accuracy.

We actually do, but don't really consider them as such. Minuteman and Trident ICBMs top out at Mach 23+, but are aimed at stationary targets and so their speed isn't a disadvantage. Russians try to argue that a true hypersonic must be able to change course in flight without slowing down, which is something that is just more trouble than it is worth in most situations (and something they haven't proven their missiles capable of).

The problem with radar detection and interception is that it can only track a limited amount of targets so imagine a swarm of conventional missiles with a single zircon. Even if it can only hit Mach 7 the altitude it can reach makes it impossible for fighter aircraft to catch before it hits a stationary ground target.

You do understand that at $3.5 million per Zircon.. Swarm firing is NEVER happening with these missiles. EVER. PERIOD. It does not matter what speed it's flight obtains, what matters is in the terminal phase it MUST slow below mach 5 or the PLASMA will block its guidance communication, including GPS. At this point, it is just a normal super sonic missile that CAN be shot down just like any other missile.

The U.S. has been researching this tech for decades and could have deployed it at least a 10 years ago. The reason they haven't is they realize and are well aware of all the issues. Hypersonic missiles can be tracked. They know how to intercept and destroy them. To lock onto a target and maneuver to intercept it requires they slow down at which point it's no longer hypersonic and can't regain its hypersonic speed.

Physics is not on anyone’s side…..do you even know how objects behave at that speed? Do you even know just how much thrust and fuel is needed to make changes to the trajectory of an object moving at that sort of speed? Things don’t just turn on a dime. The pressure from air friction combined with the temperature will literally shred the object apart if you turn too sharply.

I worked on Star wars and you are living in a fantasy world. there is no Star wars . And anything that could be use (Laser or Deuterium Neutral beam )are so big and heavy they wont be on a ship. The One shot stored energy means you will need time to recharge between shots to aim at what you can't see on Radar. the longest observable range is about 30 miles for a low flying missile so you have 20 seconds to hit it or be hit by it.

So it can get to it's target area and you can't see it on Radar .. then it slows down for the last half second of it's flight to correct it's final impact. Plenty of time to prepare your defenses and launch and intercept LOL

Not exactly. It is flying unguided hence why it needs to slow down. So it's not gonna be two seconds before it hits the target because it doesn't even know where it's target is yet. It's aimed like an artillery shell essentially. Also it can be tracked from the point of take off just by the heat signature. It just won't be able to be locked in right away. But it will be tracked. Also they will then start filtering out possible points of contact. Then defending from there. So even subsonic cruise missiles fired from just over the horizon are not visible on radar until they are within 30 miles of the target. at MACH 1 the time is 3 minutes from horizon to impact. at Mach 7 its 86 miles a minute so about 20 seconds from the horizon to impact. You wont have time to take the caps off the missile launchers. and then there is no reason to believe the enemy will not have fired 20 of these at you from 4 different directions.

Many Russian Fighters are capable of Mach 2 or better And you don't know what Russian Radar can detect. and thirdly this is not important who can defend against what. there is simply no defense against Nukes there is only Vengeance.
