As a professional delivery and charter skipper, of sailboats, and well over 100k sea miles in several oceans, I find most of these comments so ridiculous from people who probably have NEVER set foot on a yacht much less experienced any wx events at sea. Instead of being so quick to blame the captain perhaps wait until an official report is completed. A couple of my thoughts to clear up some possible misconceptions, I think it’s safe to say, there were no ports open, on a luxury yacht the generator would have been on with everyone sleeping comfortably in air conditioning. Wealthy folks are not into camping. You don’t hold the captain position on such a yacht without years of experience. Weather can change in moments. Water spouts (basically a tornado over water) may not show up on radar. It was dark so you wouldn’t see them coming at night and even if you did they are as erratic as a land tornado. To think you could just pull up anchor and move out of the way is ludicrous. I certainly do not know why she sank and will await the final report. Regardless, it is a tragic loss of life.

Look at the boat next to sinking boat/ comparing age and building you can’t even compare. Nothing happens to such and old boat. Technically it is builder and captains fault. In such cases, in order to counteract the strong effect of the wind and not drift, the engines are started and the bow is turned against the wind. They endured a storm/small tornado for exactly 16 minutes. Most likely, the ship (boats longer than 24 meters are called ships) turned around itself approximately 180° and the ship's propeller got tangled in the anchor chain. Therefore, structural damage occurred in the aft area where the garage and engine room are located, causing a large leak, the ship started taking in water at this point. Perhaps the bulb keel also broke and a 56-meter ship sank in 60 seconds. Nothing happened to the Dutch flagged ship that was about 200 meters next to it. Strong ships of this type can only be sunk by submarine torpedoes.

So sad to hear that Mike Lynch and the other missing guests are being found dead, there was hope for a while. Crew and guests simply being questioned for a few hours is inadequate. This should a murder/manslaugher inqury from the outset, involving both Italian police and British police in conjuntion with the UK's specialist MAIB (Marine Accident Investigation Branch). Already there are reports that the captain was not concerned about the weather and had not been checking for more more detailled information, at the same othe yachts had left the country to avoid the known risks. It seems also that something was seriously amiss with the procedures that night. The designer is correct about the boat being unsinkable. Yachts are required to have watertight bulkheads, so that in the event of one area being flooded the boat will not only float upright but can be operated in even a limited way. I wonder if the captain was supported by a shore team.
@sonneversets35302 ай бұрын
The investigation is ongoing w/more being added to it. You can be sure all crew & Captain will be vigorously questioned. They said all the captain could even say at first was, “We didn’t see it coming.” From the shock he was in. Open hatches had to be an issue as well. It just went down too quick. Crew should have woken up guests w/life vests when the storm hit, too. More may have survived. Human error seems a viable cause, overall. I would think some charges will be filed when this investigation is over.

If you see how these super yachts are tested with safety ( like pumps ,loads of alarms , tuff sealed doors ) . They are close to unsinkable IF staff follow basic protocols ( not leaving garage door , cabin crew doors open ) but even then alarms would be extremely loud if slight flood because it would set of pumps . I don't believe in the dictum "Wrong place; wrong time." These people were exactly where they were supposed to be, at exactly the time they were meant to be there. But death is a great equalizer, isn't it? And few of us can say we survived direct contact with a tornado. So much sadness and horror and irony in this story, but I hope the families can take small comfort in knowing their loved ones "left" while celebrating a victory in Lynch's life. So many of us won't go out on a "high," so to speak.
@kfor472 ай бұрын
I survived an F3 tornado. No big deal. They are normal around here. I don't know where you come from but you're obviously living in La La Land. You think that a tornado/waterspout will kill everything on its path. That's a misconception. There was another boat (much smaller sailboat) right next to the Bayesian. The smaller ship did not sink. In fact, the crew was able to rescue people who had survived the sinking of the Bayesian.
@adellemery33362 ай бұрын
@@kfor47 You're making incorrect assumptions. I live in South Texas--have survived 5 hurricanes, two of them Cat 4--and they included tornadoes. I've lived through terrible straight-line wind thunderstorms; catastrophic hail . . . and yes, I've survived them all. The point I was trying to make without sounding callous is that when it's your time to go, then it doesn't matter that you're inside a multimillion dollar yacht that isn't supposed to sink--that you're a gazillionaire not meant to die like someone steering a rusty dingy. There is no wrong place/wrong time. They were where they were meant to be--and that little boat you're talking about--it was where it was meant to be. Unless you're going to tell me that the skippers flipped quarters and decided at the last minute to switch mooring spots.

One never knows what to expect out in the waters. However, wasn't the captain aware of the impending storm? Didn't he take precautions? Was he like the captain of the Titanic, foolishly trying to test the unsinkable yacht? Sorry for the families who lost loved ones in this tragedy. Odd though of these reports that a business partner was unalived a few days prior. Hopefully, the daughter is found.

For me as NA rather than considering the irresponsability for not to look for harbour waters while the storm approach presumably knowing by the weather forestcast (Note: historically Roman galleys or mechant ships offten capsized on the same way on this area) and the combination of the vessel heading (presumably transversal to the incoming waves or paralel to the shoreline, anchored not sailing) with the main enviromental actions on the hull expose to the waves (load condition) and the fluctuating gusting wind forces on the mast area, lead to the yacht to oscillate (Roll) with amplitudes reaching the Roll resonance physic phenomena (ship Roll amplitudes in which any external excitation force can induce an unrestrained oscillation motion) that over come the yacht transversal stability capability inducing with a counter moment capsized the vessel and flooded after through the open hatch , very sad event , then the most probably new regulation for this type of vessel its seem for me that it will be the requirement for encrease the number of water tight compartiments (e.g.double hull) to allow a buoyancy capability on this kind of events although as the designer said while the yacht sail its unsinkable but anchored with open hatches heading transversal to the waves and wind is a very different history.
