Educated guess. Exchange "material" when needed. Every country in the world knows that the USA will go far to secure lost citizens. So it might come in handy at some point. And you don't want to damage your goods before you trade it. Foreigners normally get a better treatment abroad, because they have a high value.

His family last knew he was in a different country and had no idea where he was or where he went missing from. No one knew he was there. I'm sure his captives we're keeping him in good shape as a bargaining chip for later. Which gives me some hope for the other Americans that we do know are/were being held.

Looks like he has that "captive acquiescence" after being held for so long. He appears to appreciate what his captors did, this only happens when a person has been broken and eventually begins agreeing with and believing his captors/torturer's.
