EDIT: The man pictured as Gerrie Mühren is in fact his younger brother Arnold. Please excuse the mistake. Hey guys, this is my attempt in explaining Cruyff's extremely interesting and complicated playing career in a 51 minute episode. Hopefully it covered (almost) everything that I felt is important to the legendary Dutchmen and at the same time keeps it's pace and avoid being boring. Enjoy! Great he showed a different side of Michel as well. Even though he's widely considered as the best Dutch coach of all time (winning with Ajax then the EC with the Netherlands in 1988), actually most players that played for him didn't rate him at all (the list includes Cruyff, van Basten and other greats) and have said that if they carried out his wishes they'd never have won anything.

I was a 10 year old football fan and cried when Holland lost to W Germany in 74, but i knew i had witnessed the greatest player of that generation and possibly the greatest all round footballer. Complex man whom obviously broke down many barriers for the modern day prima donnas.
@omnivorous65 Жыл бұрын
You saw the final in 74 and you never thought that Beckenbauer was the best all around footballer on the pitch? He was central to the German offense and defense. With the exception of his attack into the penalty area and the subsequent penalty in the 2nd minute, Cryff did not make much of a difference that day.
@jimstewart2141 Жыл бұрын
@@omnivorous65 By '74 I think Beckenbauer was starting to be past his very best. But what he did show was his supreme intelligence and ability to read the play and stifle the dutch. I stand by it, i know you cannot compare eras, but i think Cruyff is the greatest all round footballer. Two footed, great header of the ball and by '74 could play and start attacks from anywhere on the field. In an all time greatest 11 the toss up would probably be between Bobby Charlton and Beckenbauer, I would select both.

One of the very best videos about Johan Cruijff! It manages to show his greater qualities: Different from most other "Best Footballers Ever", the gift of this midfielder wasn't even so much his own individual skill, but rather the fact that he always made the other players in his team rise above themselves. He changed Dutch and International football in the process. Pity you're not addressing his career as a trainer ...
@katsuchiyo64582 жыл бұрын
Great work as always! I think it would be cool to have a video on Alfredo Di Stéfano. He's quite forgotten nowadays, unfortunately. He was a total footballer like Johan Cruyff and was considered by many footballers as the greatest player of all time until Pelé came. Di Stéfano was also part of the legendary 1940s River Plate team and the Colombian gold rush. Then, he went on to win 5 consecutive European Cups with Real Madrid and even got 3 assists in a 5-3 win against Pelé's Santos.

Pep would credit Cruyff for the philosophy he has on how football should be played. La Masia was also effectively implemented by Cruyff who based it on the Ajax football school. An incredible documentary. That was amazing! Your storytelling and the portrayal of narratives is well researched and nicely visualised. Especially your research to the footage of certain games. To identify and order the goals to the right teams MUST BE incredibly painful, because most teams were still in amateur status until the beginning of the 70‘s. Which means little to no commercialization, which means no one did care about footage at all. To Johan Cruyff himself: What a fascinating football personality. A revolutionary on the football pitch, a (relative) conservative person outside the pitch. The chainsmoker who could run for days. The successor of Alfredo Di Stefano and basically the father of Lionel Messi (in terms of his False 9 era). But more importantly: A fantastic footballer, a more fantastic football manager, but more importantly a football philosopher. The one who brought success to his respective stations (Ajax, Barca and the Netherlands itself, even though he never coached them. But his impact was incredible), but were still dependent on him, because of his expertise. An arrogant genius, which work you can only have for the highest respect. Thank you again Balon for your incredible work (I hope you rest well during your video uploads). I can’t wait what you have in store for us next!

Great video. So comprehensive, I've never watched a documentary of yours that wasn't outstanding. Read his book a few years back, great read I'd recommend to anyone with an interest in football.

Simmer83 Cruyff is in fact the godfather of modern football in this world. Not only Dutch football.

Pele cracked all the top parameters at the highest level but Cruyff cracked number 1 parameter by some distance which is a Spiritual Depth. And on top of that add Cruyff as an Imaginative and Philosopher of the game with his Genius all round playing abilities and management skills, which made him the ultimate GOAT of the Game.

I never got over the 1978 world cup because Cruyff was missing. I understand why now.but it just left a void when i was small and how wonderful the Holland team was which now i could name more than the present team of Holland because they had there special number neeskens no 13, Cruyff no14, krol no5, hann no9.

I always ranked Cruyff higher than CR7 as a complete footballer, not withstanding the fact he is probably the greatest footballing mind of all time
@ysbrandd Жыл бұрын
as a complete footballer he also easily beats messi, neither of them are good at anything except scoring. Cruijff also led his team well and thus was as crucial off the ball as on the ball, which is incredibly rare!

can't believe how i remained this interested for 50 mins. Great work put into this video. I genuinely think Cruyff just as a player is top 3 OAT. Ballon d'ors, national team, longevity, single handedly carrying teams, barca and ajax, and ofc the techincal ability which is second to none; even inventing the turn

Great documentary about one of the very best and by far most influential football player and creative manager since the 60s. Also, he was tackled hundreds of times, but he always stood up, because he considered himself not to be a prima donna. He would not try to pretend being hurt too much.

Cruyff was such a fantastically elegant player, one of the greatest players of all time, no doubt.

Hey Fahad, brilliant as usual Amazing to know he won the double playing for arch-rivals Feyenoord as well!! Awaiting eagerly for the next parts for both Cruyff as well as CR7 you did earlier

This video has proved something that i have been thinking about for a long time. Cruyff brought success wherever he went, but he also brought arrogance and therefore brought only temporary success. I can see how Pep Guardiola and Xavi have brought initial success but struggle to bring any long-term success. They are, at times, unwilling to change their philosophy during the game if things are not going their way. I honestly believe Luis Enrique is the perfect manager for Barcelona. He would need the players and financial backing to be successful, but he would add so much to the future of Barcelona

Excellent documentary of the footballing career of the player I regard as the best ever. It doesn't just cover his wonderful footballing ability and football intelligence, but also his complex personality which divided so many people. I thought it was very well balanced. Unfortunately his personality and insistence on always wanting to get things his own way possible cost Holland two World Cups. Ensuring that van Beveren and vd Kuylen didn't get selected for the 1974 world cup finals probably cost them that one, and not playing in 1978 probably cost them that one as well. His coaching career was possibly just as good as his playing career.

Those are good points; Allowing too much player influence can be an issue, and as good as they were in 74 (when I was living in the UK) and being absent himself in 78 (when I was in the US), it probably made the difference... It's very odd CRYUFF would pass up the chance to reverse the result of the 74 W. Cup in the 78 Tournament... If he were playing in the Recent and Current eras, my hunch is he would have played, but that may be of a case of wishful thinking more so than total accuracy, lol
