Install instructions for the CruzeKits.com V3.4 PCV Fix Kit, available on cruzekits.com.
This kit addresses the failure of the intake manifold PCV check valve in the Sonic/Trax/Encore/Cruze. It can also be installed as preventive maintenance if the check valve nipple still exists, as the check valve flap may be deteriorated from the back. As seen in the video, manifold removal is not required for installation. This PCV Fix Kit is available for $74.99 on CruzeKits.com.
CruzeKits V3.4+ PCV Fix Kit Details & Ordering:
cruzekits.com/shop/ols/produc...

This is the answer to my endless quest of figuring out why I keep getting the P0171 code!!! I own 3 Buick Encores and they all have had the same exact parts fail or break. I am the resident expert in repairing this crappy motor and it’s peanut brittle parts. From the valve incorporated into the valve cover to the plastic water outlet and oil coolant line, this motor is very poorly engineered. This kit is freaking awesome ❤❤❤!! It eliminates the need to replace the entire intake due to a plastic valve. The removal of the intake is a major undertaking on this motor. Thanks sooo much for this video!! just did this and luckily I had already ordered a new PCV Hose for this car months earlier. Lucky I did because the valve in the bottom part.( near the turbo) eas completely gone. When you take that hose off if you can blow air from that bottom part then the valve is missing. On the new one when you look in that bottom part of that hose connector, you can clearly see the orange valve. You can actually suck through but you shouldn’t be able to blow through it. I simply took the new PCV hose. I got and cut the ends of it off to use instead of the old one. Not expensive at all on eBay or wherever anyways, I think this is something important people should know. If you did it without replacing the bottom part of that hose then you are probably missing that valve also. Should be easily remedied and replaced.

I installed this kit on my '15 Cruze a year ago. Great instructions and it runs fine. We had to replace the EVAP purge valve this week, but it was a simple swap with the hose clamps and the way this kit is designed. My question is, should the EVAP purge valve have gone this soon or should we be looking for something else happening. It seems to run fine with the new valve so I we are up and running again. DIYers like myself really appreciate videos like this. Thank you so much!

Dre Dan. I already ordered the kit plus the tools and some spare check valves. Two days later my son came back from out of town with his 2019 Buick Encore with 42,000 Kim’s ( about 26,000 miles ). I swear the engine is even smaller than it appears in this video. That first peanut brittle hose you remove is there but the last few inches before where it connects to the turbo intake seems like it has another bend in it??? Have you or anyone else installed this kit on a 2019 Encore? ( I assume a 2018 is probably the same ). I also decided to not order the oil catch can. Is this something I should have ordered as well and if it is, can it be easily added in later after the kit is already installed. I’ve talked to 3 different 1.4 litre Turbo owners in the past week all of them were 2014 or 2015 vehicles ( one Trax and one Sonic and a Cruze ) the Sonic has 100,000 miles on it. Is it possible for those check valves in the kit to be bad out of the bag? I installed the fix kit, replaced the camshaft cover with a GM one, and changed the plugs. Now the car is idling poorly and "bucking" while blowing bluish white smoke out the exhaust as it bucks. The exhaust gives off a burnt smell. The oil isn't milky and it doesn't appear to be losing coolant.
@AndreiDPop

I’ve never heard of one being bad right out of the bag but anything is possible. Pull the check valve and try blowing through it both ways. If it only flows one way, make sure it’s flowing away from the T fitting as shown in the video. Did you do a compression test?

@AndreiDPop
@AndreiDPop 4 ай бұрын
Not sure. You can test it by pulling it out (let the hoses get hot first) and blowing through it both ways. Throttle body clamp isn’t tight enough either way. It would be quite unusual for the valve to have failed that soon.

I am trying to JB weld it back on so that it stays but I'm not sure if it's going to work. Do you have any suggestions for fixing it aside from just replacing the intake manifold? @AndreiDPop
@AndreiDPop 2 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for the question! I answered this in our FAQ: cruzekits.com/pages/frequently-asked-questions Yes! This would be considered a preventive maintenance, or manifold upgrade install. There are two ways to do this. 1. With the manifold still in the car, find a flathead screwdriver, rest it against the nipple protruding in the manifold, and give it a whack with the palm of your hand to break it off. The nipple would remain inside the PCV chamber of the intake manifold and would have nowhere to go. The flap on the back side would eventually be consumed by the engine through one of the cylinders and burned through the exhaust. This is the same manner in which the check valve fails on its own, and no problems have been reported from this approach. 2. You can remove the intake manifold, break the tip off in the same fashion, and shake the flap out afterward. If you have any concerns about the check valve being ingested by the engine and causing any issues, this would be the better option. Doing this also gives you a better opportunity to clean the intake manifold thoroughly and check the PCV port on the cylinder head to make sure it's free of deposits.

@AndreiDPop
@AndreiDPop 2 ай бұрын
Not really. I don’t think it’s necessary. For some high power applications it may be beneficial but using a low volatility oil like AMSOIL signature series would be far more effective in reducing overall oil consumption. I personally don’t run a catch can on my crude.

Hey Andrei, do you think a 2.9psi cracking pressure check valve will be ok to use?
@AndreiDPop
@AndreiDPop 6 ай бұрын
No, that is much too high. The one in the kit I offer is 0.3PSI. It should not be more than 0.5psi.
@kfhkfh7530
@kfhkfh7530 6 ай бұрын
@@AndreiDPop what will/could happen if the check valve pressure is too high?
@AndreiDPop
@AndreiDPop 6 ай бұрын
@@kfhkfh7530 more oil leaks, reduced fuel economy, more oil consumption. Bottom line is the intake produced -8psi of vacuum max. Between about -0.5 and -8 psi of manifold vacuum, the manifold will apply vacuum to the crankcase which will aid the low tension piston rings in producing an optimal seal to the cylinder walls and thereby minimizing oil consumption and maximizing fuel efficiency. If you have a check valve with a crack pressure of 2.9psi, then you’re basically not going to have crankcase vacuum when the manifold is vacuum is between -0.5 and -3.4psi because the manifold has to overcome the threshold for the check valve to open. It just so happens that this is the range the manifold will be in during cruising and normal driving. So the check valve would only open during deceleration and idle. This is why crack pressure is very important. The PCV fix kit uses check valves of the absolute lowest possible crack pressure to ensure that the engine continues to operate optimally without any drawbacks. You might think this doesn’t make a difference but over the course of a year, the additional cost of fuel adds up. If you’re going to make your own fix for the PCV system, do it right so it doesn’t cost you money down the road in most fuel economy and additional oil consumption.

Make sure, and I should add emphasis on Make Sure that you know the old orange intake diaphragm is not only half missing. Use a pick, hex key wrench, anything, to verify the port is clear enough to take the entire new plug stem. My experience: Following the video instruction with a dry fit, my plug still failed to click through the port. (Do not try to click in during a dry fit!) It was ripped from the glue and fell. If only the nipple half of the diaphragm is missing, yet the remaining mass of the diaphragm clings on the other side, it can prevent the new plug from engaging its hook. This V3.4 PCV Fix by CruzeKits is brilliant ! Ideally if one wants to avoid the problem I came upon; perform this procedure with their original plenum removed from the vehicle, as to prevent the loss of any parts down the PCV journal.

I've been having oil leaks around the front of the valve cover for awhile now and when doing highway driving up steep hills where I'm in boost it sprays oil all over the inside of the hood and on top of the air box. I assume it's pushing past the dipstick tube seal and spraying out there. Then one day a few weeks ago i was driving and the engine just started stumbling and blew a cloud of bluish white smoke out the exhaust. I pulled into work and parked and the stumble and smoke cleared up. About 8 hours later after work I drove home and all was good until just before getting home (about 15 minutes) and it did the stumble/smoke thing again. Haven't driven it in a few weeks now but start it from time to time and it will let out a bit of smoke on startup and once the startup idle drops it clears up. Too afraid to drive it to test anything further. I had assumed it was the valve cover and was going to just replace that but now I'm wondering if I should check if the PCV valve is gone. If it is and I install the fix kit I'm assuming I should also replace the valve cover anyway? The diaphragm isn't whistling and I don't get any engine codes.

@@AndreiDPop So I pulled the tube off of the PCV check valve opening (snapped that peanut brittle in the process) and I had a really hard time telling but I'm about 98% sure the check valve is gone. The opening of the tube and the opening where the check valves resides were both coated in oil as well so that made it harder to tell. I didn't have any q-tips to get down in there and clean it but the fact that there was oil coating the inside is a fairly good indicator that something's wrong. I'm definitely going to have to do some cleaning before I can install the fix kit, new camshaft cover, and plugs.

FYI.... your brush tool to clean out the PCV port doesn't work on a Chevy Sonic with the intake manifold still in the car. The PCV port sits underneath the back hood opening and there's not enough room to fit the tool and drill. I tried angling it but there was just no way. MAYBE if you had a super low profile drill it would work but you'd have to insert the brush into the port and then attach the drill after the brush is already inside the port. I ended up using muscles and spun the brush by hand and then used a whole lot of q-tips and brake cleaner to get it as good as I could. Hopefully that worked good enough.

Most people would just hit it with a flathead screwdriver to break it off and install the kit as usual. I’ve never had anyone report any issues from doing that, since it basically causes it to fail in the same manner as it does on its own. You can do it with the manifold still in the car or you can take it out if you want to shake that flap out but it will otherwise just get consumed by the engine.
