I loved watching this video. I've been fascinated by watching Squirrels since I was a little kid. Some years ago I lived on a big estate with tall trees. One day I was sitting in the yard and I heard a Hawk cry and a Squirrel's loud noise at the same time. I looked up to see a red tail Hawk flying away with a Squirrel in its talons that it had just grabbed from an Ash tree branch about 70' feet up. The Squirrel was screaming and wriggling around madly. The Squirrel finally fell from the Hawk's grip and landed on my lawn. I thought that it was dead but after about a minute the little guy stood up and slowly looked around 360 degrees. He saw me and looked at me for a while then did another faster 360 look around and then he gazed at me again for a while. Then he scurried off into the bushes. I felt sorry for the little guy so a left him a big pile of shelled walnuts and a bowl of water at the edge of my patio. When I came back home the nuts were all gone. Then later, I noticed that a Squirrel would be waiting for me at the end of my driveway when I came home from work and it would race alongside of my car as I drove down the driveway and at the end where I parked there was a maple tree and he would beat me to the tree and run up the tree real fast just ahead so I could see him. He did that day after day and my driveway was 400' long so that was no little sprint for the Squirrel. Then later I was out in the yard picking Wine Cap mushrooms from a wood chip bed to cook and I noticed a squirrel watching me. I brought the mushrooms inside and then went back out and then found a Russula mushroom in the grass. I picked it and tossed it toward the Squirrel since I knew that they could eat them. I walked more and found another Russula and the Squirrel had followed me and it was even closer so I tossed the next one to him as well. On another day there were more Russulas sprouting but no Squirrel in sight so I gathered a bunch of them and left them in a pile at the edge of my patio where I had previously left the walnuts. And the next time I looked they were all gone. But now here is the funniest part of this whole story. My primary entrance to my home was by a wooden staircase that led from my driveway up to a second floor deck. One day I was leaving to go to work and as I was walking down the stairs and I felt something drop onto my shoulder. I looked down and there was a piece of a Russula mushroom bouncing down the stairs. I looked up and there was a squirrel sitting on a branch right above me on that Maple tree at the end of my driveway. I thought "Oh what a coincidence". And then a few days later I was on my way to work again and going down the stairs and something bounced off of my head. I looked down to see another piece of a Russula mushroom again and I looked up to see the Squirrel on the branch again. I had a real good laugh and I realized that I had made a friend and that my friend was playing with me.

I recently raised 2 orphaned baby squirrels. I’d never really liked squirrels before, but these 2 little monsters changed my mind. They are very clever problem solvers, and very acrobatic. These have talons that would make Freddy Krueger jealous. I called my babies The Krugerettes, but they did adapt to my lack of fur and the scratches and cuts decreased. Those talons are their secret weapon when it comes to the amazing jumps and ability to climb just about anything. I now have to carry nuts with me whenever I go outside. The male will meet me at the car and demand a cuddle and a nut. The cuddle is negotiable, the nut is not. Good luck outsmarting them, and thanks for not hurting them.

Great fun to watch their antics! I had pretty much solved the squirrel problem with a 30" piece of tin wrapped around my nine foot high 4X4 feeder pole and cutting back the nearby limbs they could jump from. But raccoons were much more challenging. I tried a number of things before finally installing an electric fence. It has worked for several years now. The squirrels pick up the sunflower seeds the birds drop and don't even try to climb the pole. The raccoons we used to see frequently don't even bother any more.

@marvindoolin1340
@marvindoolin1340 2 жыл бұрын
@@getin3949 I'm not surprised. The one I'm using for the bird pole is pretty mild, but some people want to install something that could stop a person's heart if they think they might be burglarized. Our property could easily be called the middle of nowhere. Our sixty acres is heavily wooded except for the two we keep mowed. When our grandchildren were small, we'd turn the fences off when they played outside. We have another more powerful fence around the carport where we park our pickup, and I've found dead toads, frogs, snakes, and crawdads on it. I'm never happy about it. In a two-month period several years ago, something ate the wiring to the truck's transmission twice, disabling it and costing several hundred dollars. We learned that others in the area had put electric fences, and ours has worked. The bird pole came later.

This was interesting and funny. You may have done this (sorry I fast forwarded) but rather than raise the feeder so high to accommodate the length of the slinky, you could shorten the slinky by using a zip tie to hold a compressed inch together (or however much you needed to shorten it) at the top where you attached it to the pole. Just a thought. Anyway, this was great and I loved the preview of your other videos. The bar stools are really cute! LOL! Thanks for sharing! 😀

There's an easy way to do the 4 slinkies. Overlap them into 1. Get them about even, stretch them out a bit, and then slide them into each other. You should still get roughly 4x the pulling force from the 4 slinkies, but they'll all fit on the bar about like one slinky. Once stretched a bit they're mostly air, putting 4 where 1 was should be easy enough.
