I saw Henry V at the Globe in London. When this speech ended, everyone in the audience cheered. I got goose bumps.

It doesn't matter I'm stuck with a royal family I despise or a tory-liberal government I didn't vote for, or a country whose biggest selling newspaper is the awful Sun, I wouldn't swap being an Englishman for any other nationality. Our humour, wit, irony, history, TV, graft, literature, and the bloody weather is what makes us. And no other country in the world could have given us Shakespeare or The Beatles!

Rhinobaby I totally agree. Thank you for using an eloquent argument that is constructive and shows there are still people in the world who appreciate the bard. I love this speech and the methods it can be used to interpret HOW it is spoken. I have always thought of this as a rousing speech

English were outnumbered 10:1. 6,000 French died. 400 English. Oh and 6,000 English longbow arrows in the air in the first flight! Yeah, Wikipedia.

I love the constant side-by-side comparison of the Branagh and Olivier versions- it's wholly demonstrative of the spectrum of potential in Shakespeare's writing. It works in effete, measured, archaic patter, but it also works in dirty, accessible, vociferation. Surely the unwashed masses and the pretentious idiots can come together and agree that an actor is only ever as good as his script!

No, assured though that the man Branagh be, his assurance cannot indeed reach such as we expect our dear, dear masterful nature to be. God bless

Beautiful, it's a shame it has to be affiliated with the BNP, or any party for that matter. It's a work of art, not a political machination that Olivier/Brannagh have acted out.
