I love how Carl always has some sort of balloon. When he’s a kid he carries one, Ellie sends him one on a stick, then he sells them at the zoo, he send Ellie one on a stick in the hospital, he has them on his house, and then at the end he has a blimp which is like a giant balloon lol

My husband and I had an Up themed wedding. We walked back up the aisle to the piano song “married life”. He wore the grape soda pin on his boutonniere and I had one on my bouquet and our cake topper was their two chairs. We really thought it captured signing up for the whole adventure together. The good the sad and eventually the ending. It was a perfect day 🥰.

the whole meaning of this story is letting go of the past and living in the present, the villain Charles Muntz is obsessed with the past and proving he was not a fraud that he spent his entire life looking for a bird and wasted his life to the point he became forgotten, while Carl was willing to let go of his past in the form of his house to save Russell and truly start living again, it a great movie i can watch endlessly

it broke my heart a little when you were talking about Carl bringing enough food to Paradise Falls because I'm pretty sure he was going there to die, which is pretty dark but that's always been my head canon. meeting Russell, Dug and Kevin literally gave him a new life and purpose so he could start a new adventure like Ellie always wanted. He's basically saying "I don't want to earn that "Assisting the Elderly" badge if it means helping you!", which is very meaningful, considering that he was hoping he would see his dad again at that ceremony. So he feels so strongly that helping Carl is bad, he's willing to give up his chance to reconnect with the person who means the most to him. That's powerful stuff.

Michael Giacchino is a genius. His soundtrack for this movie is perfect( got an Oscar for it; Married life is one of the best music ever, gives us so much emotion. I remember showing my mom this first scene and when it ended she said " I can't believe i'm crying this hard over a children's movie" And all the others soundtrack he've done... The batman soundtrack is all i've been listening for the last 3 months. I swear hearing Batman's theme in the morning gets me hyped up for the rest of the day

Funny story, when I first saw this as a kid when it came out, I wear hearing aids and when ever his went off I panicked because I thought it was mine and my mum thought it was as well. “Hayley turn it off!” “I can’t!” 😂 even though he was way older then me and wears hearing aids because of age, it was nice to see a person with them in a film as a kid.

As if you needed it to be sadder - the actors that played Carl (Ed Asner) and Charles (Christopher Plummer) BOTH died last year. My wife and I saw this about 12 years ago when we were newly engaged, and the opening wrecked us. This does sum up getting older though, I'm 44, and I swear to god some mornings it feels like I was your age just yesterday. Make the most out of your 20s and 30s, they'll be gone in a blink. The first part of this great film, is an emotional endurance test. And according to Google: Pixar estimated it would take 23.5 million balloons to lift a 1,800 square foot house. Pixar used 20,622 balloons in the animation of the lift off and 10,297 balloons from the floating sequences.

This is my favorite Pixar movie and by my favorite Pixar director - Pete Docter (UP, Monsters, Inc., Inside Out, Soul). The creativity on this one is hard to match, and you gotta love the metaphors. We all know about the first 15 or so minutes of movie magic! One of my favorites is when Carl was emptying his house so he could go after Russell. The title of the soundtrack playing on that scene is "Memories Weigh You Down". I swear the metaphors on this film (on all of Docter's movies, actually!) are just golden. Loved it when he was looking at his house floating away towards the end.

So here’s the thing about the start of the movie: Carl doesn’t have any lines. Ellie does all the talking. Everything we know about him comes from what we see of his interactions with Ellie. Then the movie really starts and we meet a grumpy old man. I think it’s really interesting that we don’t actually meet Carl until after her death. It’s like we didn’t really witness his life beforehand, we really only meet grumpy old man Carl.

16:25 The three top dogs, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma, are a Doberman Pinscher, a Rottweiler, and an American Bulldog respectively. They were all historically bred to hunt, track, trap, or take down medium to large game or prey for their owners. They are good house pets with proper training and exercise because sometimes they can be high-strung if their energy isn't let out in a constructive way. They're also very intelligent. Sadly, as "hunting dogs" they have an undeserved negative reputation as being aggressive and dangerous. Most of Charles' dogs are hunting and tracking type breeds like these, and I think some American Bullies, Shepherds, Collies, and Pit Bulls from what I can see. ... And then there's Dug, a literal Golden Retriever with a sweet and lovable personality. (People who are naturally friendly/gregarious, gentle, and fun-loving are often described as "Golden Retrievers.") Goldies weren't bred so much for hunting prey as they were for swimming into shallow water and retrieving ducks and waterfowl their owners shot that fell into said water. Their job description is literally the game of fetch. And the grip of their mouth (Goldies and Labradors alike) is gentle enough that they can hold a raw egg in their mouth without breaking it. Anecdote time: I used to have an English Lab, D.J., who found a baby bird on our balcony bc it had fallen there from a nest in the awning. My mom followed him to the balcony when he found it, and to her alarm he picked up the hatchling, fitting it entirely inside his mouth... He brought it to her even though he was just a few feet away from her, and D.J. gently plopped the baby on our floor. It was a bit startled and wet from his slobber, but it was otherwise ok. We kept the baby safe and his mom came to our balcony to feed him in his little cardboard box nest every day until he got big enough to fly away with her. I still think about that bird, and about D.J., who passed away about 6 years ago.

few months before the movie was released, here in Brazil, a Priest tried to made a long distance flight with baloons, in the middle of the way he was caught by a storm just like in the movie. Of course he died and his body was found really far from where his journey started. Pixar had a problem to merchandising the movie around here and the priest won a Darwin Award.
