BRING BACK TOP OF THE POPS ! ------------------------------------------------ I always loved the total disregard for human life that the cemeramen had. Every week someone would be mown down by them. It was great fun to watch. BTW, it wasn't called 'the indifferent bob', it was called 'The Zombie Sway'. Thank you for uploading this x x

From other comments elsewhere and from some memory. At one time supposedly the audience was rationed and could only get a ticket to one show. However it appears the same faces (of the time 1968-1972 roughly) would appear each week. In part this is because the week following show could contain items filmed the previous week - groups would do double recording incase they were not available and the disc was potentially rising (the groups might change clothing). There were a couple of schools near the BBC in West London (Some was recorded at Lime Grove ?) and they would be part of the younger audience, others came from London College of Fashion and Imperial College , I am sure others were professional dancers poss from west end show understudies and still more friends of families of the shows directors / producers / cameramen and others within the BBC.

In the early days (1968-74) watching TOTP was a "must". But then it became Top Of The SLOPS, & full of talentless bores.

Presenter wearing an oversized bright jacket & shirt combo..yes, it's the 90s. I enjoy Mr Baker 's tale about his mother 's name in a bank. He's been cancelled now, hasn't he? I was thinking about Mr Blackburn- please don't say the words ' Christmas '& 'stuffing' in any order, in one sentence.

Indeed. He made a patently obvious joke, (remember how those used to work?), about Harry and Megan's first child that compared the sprog to a chimpanzee. Something that, many years ago, would have been dismissed as being silly, at best. But, due to us living in such, 'enlightened', times now, he was sacked by the BBC for being, 'offensive', under the auspice that the mother of said child wasn't entirely Caucasian, therefore cannot be made fun of, due the practice of politically correct pearl clutching than goes out of its way to compare anyone who isn't genetically, 'pure white', with a chimpanzee. The irony being that it's those who consider themselves the moral arbiters of political correctness who make this connection, whereas the, 'vile offender', treated it merely as a innocuous, mildly amusing joke. You can make your own mind up who were the actual racists in all this.

Footballers George Best was a TOTP audience. Tony Blackburn hated audience standing around him.

I expect if this programme was made today, that odious scumbag Savile would be edited out. Very understandably. In the interests of history not repeating to itself though, it is better that he is left in - he _is_ part of Top of the Pops' history, after all, as unpalatable as that fact may be; and it is better that people watching this clip, say, 30 or 40 years from now will go "Ughh, there's that monster Saville!" Rather than "Wasn't there some scandal about some weirdo with a cigar who used to present that show?" "Who's that, Grandad?" "Oh, I can't remember now, I think his name was Ron Seville or something... I can't remember what he did, but it must have been bad, cos he was all, like, well in with the Establishment and then it was all, like, 'I never met that man in my life!' - They couldn't run fast enough! Or worse, people will just think he was just one of those people who disappeared in The Great Cancelling for wrongthink, or perhaps even for being 'slightly lech~y', when in fact he was vile to the core - a paediphile, a rapist, a necrophiliac, and God only knows what else! It does make me heave a bit when I see the old j¡33~rag here though!
