Girls in those days were more evolved emotionally, more beautiful and stylish, more appealing aesthetically....what a joy to behold, so refreshing and liberating to the spirit. They were not vulgar at all, just sweet, nice and groovy.

That wasn't how it was viewed at the time. It was seen as symptomatic of moral degeneration by a critical mass of people who's views were still broadly in line with people such as Mary Whitehouse. Your rose-tinted view of the world has somehow recast this as wholesome, when it's really nothing more than titilation set to dumbed-down music that's willfully antithetical to the highest cultural standards set by the 19th Century classical canon. Don't get me wrong: THIS is why I think TOTP was great. it stuck two fingers up to those values and by doing so forced people to defend them. Humanity is accelerated by conflict.

TOTP was always notorious for having miserable down-trodden looking audiences, especially the girls, who were constantly herded about like sheep from one part of the studio to another and instructed to dance. To me and my friends as teenage girls at the time, most of the dancers in the audience, even if pretty, appeared slightly zombiefied, while the professional dancers seemed unnaturally animated and sexualised. From our perspective then, TOTP, while annoying and not very cool, was still essential viewing since for a few years it was the ONLY pop music programme on TV where artists actually appeared to mime/fake perform their latest record.. which was better than nothing... Ready Steady Go when it came along on a rival channel was a much better show. More fun, more spontaneous, less fake, more hip!
