Can you please explain how you got the colour is red and blue is down?

A lot of cryptic crossword solving is about coming up with short synonyms for the words in the clue...so when I saw colour, I thought of types colour... red being good as it's pretty short. As for blue being down... this is a common synonym for blue meaning depressed, I.e. when you are blue
