@@arkadipmondal5402 No, it actually fixes the boot sector after infection. Windows has an option to do it through command prompt but it isn't the best. Kaspersky can be using windows tool to fix or it can be using it's own tool. We don't know unless kaspersky becomes open-source.

The MBR (Master boot record) is the very first segment of your hard drive. It has the instructions for the initial jump into the operating system. From there, the initialization code for your computer begins to detect devices, etc. The MBR is the most key (usually 512 bytes) of your computer's hard drive.

@rackthejipper6282 i mean, you can, but can be a pain in the ass. I dont think you can install macOS but you can install linux. The hard drive isnt useless, it still has all of your data. The thing is, your computer cant boot, making you not able to acess the data in the hard drive. If you get a thumbdrive or a disc installer for windows there will be an option saying "recover this pc" and it will give you some options to fix your computer. Normally cmd does the trick to fix it.

Something that should be pretty obvious but apparently not... Yes the anti-virus/anti-malware removed the threat, but it cannot recover your boot disk if it was deleted by the virus/malware itself, thats a whole different task thats outside the scope of what an anti-virus can provide as a service worker agent. You have to restore that part yourself using recovery tools to restore lost data that has been wiped. For typical Windows users you probably wouldn't care about these things and how they work by understanding how the boot disk works and the operating system itself.

Antiviruses are incapable of restoring the MBR. So the antivirus is basically giving you a chance to save your important files elsewhere since your current computer is done for.

This is like a game of Sprint, where the finish line for the malware is to corrupt and remove your OS, and for the anti-virus, it is to find and eliminate said malware. You're basically giving the malware a headstart before the anti-virus, essentially giving the malware a free win, destroying your computer. Only after the finish line does the anti-virus eliminate the malware, but its already too late since the malware already finished the race before the anti-virus ever reached it.

The main goal of the antivirus is to delete the virus and protect the PC from Threat like that. Once theboot segments is delete, the antivirus cant restore it, as it is not its purpose. You should use an another programm. With that logic, Windows defender perfomed pretty good
