A commercial for Crystal Gravy, a new clear gravy that lets consumers drown their plate in gravy and still see the meat and mashed potatoes underneath. [Season 19, 1993]

One of the rare skits that's funnier today than it was on release. Originally a joke about Crystal Pepsi, now kinda a joke about the whole decade.

I saw this when it first aired and 30 years later think about it more frequently than I care to admit. The image of that clear gravy being poured over ham haunts me. The best thing about it though was that it aired either just before or just after actual commercials and I remember all of us laughing as we realized with relief that it wasn’t an actual product. Crystal Pepsi was big back then, and it seemed like a lot of things were being made clear, so we had some legitimate concern. Also we may have been smoking pot 😂😂

Who's here from reddit? "My friend was an intern on Saturday Night Live. There was a short-lived trend back in the day to make “clear” products, that were supposedly more healthy - clear, “Crystal Pepsi” being one of the more famous. He showed up at work and was told his only priority for the day was to “buy as much Karo Syrup as he could find.” So, he spent the next 9-10 hours going to every bodega he could find, asking for all the Karo Syrup they had, throwing it in a Taxi and then returning to the studio, when it was full, only to head out again. He said he bought out every store in the phone book, and they still ran out and had to scrape syrup off the drop cloths to finish the spot. "

I remember when this aired I thought it was hilarious because it brought back memories of the chicken gravy my elementary school served. As far as I was concerned, it was Mrs. Penny of Penn-Lincoln Elementary who invented clear gravy. It was just watered-down chicken gravy, it likely came about because she had to stretch a can of gravy to make sure the entire student body got some on their mashed potatoes. I think she added a little cornstarch so it had the thickness of normal gravy. It tasted about as well as you'd expect. It was well-intentioned but we would've been better off without the clear gravy.

Thank you for making this ad actually become more nauseating than it already was. I used to work at a care facility for people with Alzheimer's disease and other "problems of aging", as the jargon was at the time. If a person was beginning to have trouble swallowing runny liquids like apple juice and orange juice, we were instructed to add corn starch - and yes, to add it to water, as well - to give it "nectar thickness", equivalent to apricot juice. When their condition advanced still further, and they began to choke even on nectar-thick liquids, more corn starch would be added to make it "honey thick". Honey-thick water was especially unpleasant to serve - Crystal Gravy looks much nicer than honey-thick water. Eventually, people would be unable to drink liquids at all. Then, they would have to stay hydrated by "receiving dining assistance" with spoonsful of "pudding-thick" apple juice", "pudding-thick" orange juice and the eerie substance, looking like jellied snow or a magically-congealed raincloud, which was pudding-thick water.

I used to let my son (my non-apologies for not being gender neutral) stay up and watch SNL. He didn't see the humour in this spoof advert. He decided to go to bed with the admonishment that the world is in trouble with my generation in charge. Honestly it was kinda crappy how Pepsi's marketing company treated VH. Eddie said they told them were going to use the song either way, but if VH didn't play ball then Marketing would have just had another band cover it. So given the choice between watching another band's version blow up all over the airwaves or use their own original and they make money, Van Halen took the money. Basically a false choice, since they aren't morons.
