We’re back at the Playboy Mansion with a fresh set of eyes. Crystal Hefner is the one who did it. The girlfriend who became the wife but at what personal cost? From the outside the Playboy mansion is all hot tubs and zoos but as we’ve learned, on the inside it’s actually hella boring and literally covered in mold.

The show really had us all loving Mary like she was a sweet old woman who cared for the girls. Now if I rewatch the show I watch it just as you said, she's a facilitator. She might like some of the girls but the girls are products and she's a manager of that product. I'll have to read this book because I've read all the other mansion books because what can I say, The Girls Next Door had me in a chokehold and it's such easy tv to numb out to.

Mary was charming but such an enabler of Hef's lifestyle that kept the view of women so limited!

I always thought it was interesting Mary told Bridget not to move into the mansion. She was definitely aware of everything that went on. And I also think she let Holly stay with her when she left the mansion so she could keep an eye on her for Hefner

I had Mary clocked when the show was on tv. I have a second sense for frenemies. Also knowing Hugh was a narcissist megalomaniac I knew he would have an insider pretend to be on the girls side when she was just his intel. Mary hung with him from very early on and wasn’t a beauty ever- she knew how to live the life of a Hugh hanger on without all the headaches and she was able to do it because she was always ugly.

If we see that ultimately, Hugh Hefner did NOT do good things for women, that he sold a lie through actual gaslighting of decades of women? Any woman enabling his behavior while as close as Mary was? Is she the Ghislaine Maxwell of this thing? I'm starting to think yes. But I don't know if she was recruiting women. But she was no friend to these young women. My daughter will be 23 this year, we lost her Mom, my incredible wife, when she was 15, and she really chose to grieve that loss, I know she still does, but also she has never thought the world owes her something. She's not going to let that be her theme song for life (I'm not that good at balance) I would love to take credit for that, but it's 99% my wife and how she loved and showed our girl a woman can be a teacher and a Mom. Or stay home with your kids, but work of some sort is important. We went and helped at homeless shelters, a lot kinds of helping - my wife always said what a privilege to get to help.

Hefner thinking we thought he was a sexual GOD is the most hilarious part of it all. 😂

This was a very good analysis. Crystal is trying but it seems there is a lot she is still blind to. Your treatment of her was fair but honest.

Crystal owes Holly big apology. Crystal left twice and came back of her own accord. She was unhappy with prenup and filming contracts so she left. Hef revised them. She didn't like the lifestyle so she left Hef again at the altar. Hef got rid of the girls for her. Now she says she was trapped.

I like your perspectives so far. You are talking about truth without only saying Crystal is evil. It does suck to have no real foundation in life, built by good parents, but as my sister, the kindest person I know *and* the person who has been through the most absolute hell had on her wall for years "We are not responsible for what happens to us, but we *are* responsible for what we do with what happens to us". People were mad when my sister refused to call herself a victim after ... well, as I mentioned, she's been through hell. I saw Crystal on Piers Morgan, sounding like a miserable victim of abuse who CANNOT WAIT to jettison her married name. But the book was written by Crystal Hefner. Her podcast channel is called Crystal Hefner. I think the first "interview" was with one of Hugh Hefner's sons. She also told Piers HH controlled her funds, then said she purchased *several* houses herself at the same time. Huh? She was a multi millionaire before he died. Hard to know what was true, what to think. Especially when "I got hit on the head with a giant rainbow lollipop" lol. Oh, and fuck Mary.

Maybe it goes without saying, but Hefner was born in the 1920s which was not only different from now but even from 50 years ago. It was much more controlled for both men and women, He failed to see his own sexual liberation wouldn't necessarily mean the same thing for all people. Sure, he supported abortion rights and birth control before they were more widely accepted, but he didn't understand his station also relegated women to mere sexual objects in many cases. This is why he was so unprepared when debating feminists in the 60s and 70s.

Good analysis. I read the book, and though I enjoyed it, I, like you, found it difficult to sympathize with her. I'm sure she went through some serious trauma in her relationship with Hef, but the bottom line is she wanted a luxury lifestyle without the indignities and loss of self that are inevitable consequences of sex work.

Great call on all the stories and the women saying the gay stuff was acting. Like no b y’all were still doing the acts just because you wouldn’t call yourself gay doesn’t make it not gay 😂

Do you think icons are only people around your age in this current time? Barbie was an icon of female empowerment...in the 70s💁🏻‍♀️ The standards for women were much different back then. That being said I wouldn't compare Crystal to her at all. I don't think anyone thought of Crystal as empowered back in 2008. I was always sad for her. As someone who is only five or six years younger then her and was Really into girls next door in the hayday and beyond I can say I recognized that she was very insecure and was just pretending to be what Hef wanted her to be.

We shouldn’t criticize survivors. …. Like this isn’t really about dialogue it’s just being mean.

They only criticize the choices she made based on values (being famous, having a glamorous life). She did have the choice to leave the mansion AT ALL TIMES. She just didn't want to.

Survivor of what?! lol that’s like saying you’re a survivor for going to your chosen 9-5 everyday. She chose her path and is just embarrassed because now she knows a little better/ is just trying to sway public perception of her very obvious intentions in that relationship

I agree with the being mean part, that seems to be their angle. BUT I don’t view any of them as “survivors” when they knowingly did what they did for money and fame, that’s what they meant about values. They all knew what they were getting into

I’m reading this now and so excited to watch this podcast! Not sure if i should watch it now or wait until I finish the book…. Decisions decisions! I love celebrity memoirs and am so glad I found this channel ❤ my abusive asshole boss wouldn’t let me out of work to make your la live event but i hope you’ll come back soon - i just got fired so certainly I’ll be able to make the next one 😅 🫠😂😭 A random question in case you ladies see this: does John Stamos’ book ever get better or less about sex and more about acting? I’m stuck in like chapter 8 hell and he keeps talking about his sex capades and it’s seriously making me unable to carry on. But i want to hear about his full house days. Do i just need to skip some chapters? I’m so discouraged that i picked up Crystal’s book instead. But want to finish John’s too if it’s not all about sex and yuckiness. I didn’t think i was a prude but his book has been gross to me (aside from the general hospital acting parts which i REALLY enjoyed which is why i think I’d enjoy when he gets to full house if i can stick it out)
