When I saw McCartney perform in 2014 he (surprisingly!) did "1985" -- and it was still in his vocal range pretty comfortably as it's just that raspy throat/head voice he uses on the track. It was terrific.

The album was recorded in Lagos Nigeria at a studio owned by EMI. One night, while walking back from guitarist Denny Laine's rented house Paul and Linda were held up at knifepoint and all the lyrics demos recorded for the album were stolen. Paul had to go by memory to recreate the songs he had written and demoed for the recording of the album.

You looked so happy in the video! I was thinking of you this weekend. Had a member of my family that passed recently and I thought of you right away and your tragic situation. I really empathized with you on the loneliness you feel and the confusion you feel thinking - how could that person be gone! That person I knew lived a rich and full life but it's still a loss. Now I think of you and hope time has healed some of your pain. I know something like that takes a long time. Be strong!

Paul was at Dustin Hoffman's home and Hoffman challenged him to write a song about a topic he would give him. He pulled out an issue of (i believe) Time Magazine which featured a story on the death of Pablo Picasso in which it mentioned that Picasso went to bed at 3 AM and the last words to his friends were "Drink to me, drink to my health...". Hoffman was so excited about Paul writing the basics of the song right there on the spot that he called to his wife to come out and watch. I think the song was structured the way it was to do in the song what Picasso did in his works. Love your analysis of a great album which was done ony by Paul, Linda, and Denny Laine (minus the orchestra parts).

Hi Crystal! Lovely reaction and analysis... as usual. My thoughts on side 2 of this wonderful album... Just as Let Me Roll It is Paul doing John, No Words is his homage to George... From the haunting vocal melody and chord structure to that distinctive lead guitar tone... C'est Magnifique! Musically speaking, Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five's placement as my second favorite on this album falls between Let Me Roll It and Band on the Run, all three easily making it into my Top 10 Wings songs... Musically speaking. Mamunia, actually speaking IS my favorite Wings song... for no other reason than it just so eloquently speaks to my life's philosophy. Wonderful visiting with you once again. Cheers!

I am so honored to share a favorite with you, especially considering how hard it is to actually pick a favorite when everything McCartney does is insanely wonderful! And yes, the little tune at the end is my attempt at a thank you but it pales in comparison to the huge impact the super thanks has on me, especially on these super hard times, I can never fully quite express how grateful I am! Nice observation about Paul's many voices. Many rock and pop vocalists rank higher, but I can't think of anyone who's as much of a vocal shapeshifter (not counting acrobatic voice artists like Bobby McFerrin). Someone made a video on this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYfcgYaEd5yMr7c. Classic Paul in first half of "Hey Jude," growling screamer in "Helter Skelter," straight ahead rock 'n roll screamer in "Long Tall Sally," intentional voice swallower in "Get Back," low Elvis-style in "Lady Madonna," gentle wispy voice in "I Will," scrunched up twang in "1985," nasal extreme in the "Temporary Secretary" chorus, silly talker in "You Know My Name," strong falsetto in "Check My Machine," pretty Brian Wilson falsetto in chorus of "She's Leaving Home," breathy falsetto in "So Bad," playful posh in part of "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey," he's like three different guys in "You Never Give Me Your Money" ... And so many variants.

...good on you, Crystal, for loving '1985' so much - its brilliant... and I personally love overall the B-side even a bit more than the famous A-side with all its single & live shows hits! There's a sweet story related to this album - don't know if you have heard it: one night Paul had a beer or so in a bar with Dustin Hoffman (yes, the famous actor), and Dustin felt like challenging Paul (in an amiable way), and said: "...there must be a theme, that you can't write a brilliant song about...", and Paul took the bite, and replied; "Try me"... there was a newspaper or magazine lying on the table, and Dustin's eyes fell on one of the headlines, and it said: 'Picasso's last words', so he chose it to tease Paul... now: you just listened here to what he made of it. Is there a limit to his genius?!?? Probably not. 😎

It's a bit clearer if you listen to sides 1 and 2 together, but "Picasso's Last Words" contains callbacks not only to "Jet," but to "Bluebird" (in the rhythm-box percussion) and "Mrs Vandebilt" (at the end). Helps unify the whole album.

Hey Crystal! Happy Sunday! I’m so glad you enjoyed this album. “No Words” is probably the most Beatles-esque track on the album. At the time, all four of them tried to get away from the Beatles sound. But some old habits tend to creep in every now and then. “Mamunia” means “safe haven” in Arabic and it was also the name of the hotel where the McCartneys were staying. “Helen Wheels” is a good old-fashioned rocker. In a way it mirrors “The Ballad of John and Yoko”. It could have been called “The Ballad of Paul and Linda”. “Picasso’s Last Words” is like a movie consisting of vignettes. A French film. Love it. “1985”is one of my favorites, too. Love that ending. Love the harmonies. Those Wings harmonies became a trademark. They influenced my singing, too. I am not a great singer, but if I was blessed with anything it was being able to sing in three-part harmony. Wings helped teach me that. Crystal, I know this is a time jump, but I’d like to suggest “Double Fantasy” by John and Yoko. It’s a bittersweet album and I would grab a box of Kleenex because I always need one, but it’s so great. ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏

Crystal, I love your analysis of this! It's like listening to the album for the first time all over again. I forgot just how great this album was. I love how McCartney blends the acoustic guitars and melodic bass (something about the combo of treble and bass that he does very well), and then punctuates it with highly creative electric guitar solos. I seem to recall a story where Dustin Hoffman asked Paul to demonstrate how he could make a song out of anything. So Paul took an article about Picasso and turned it into Picasso's Last Words.

Hi Crystal Luv your reviews. McCartney's Band On The Run is amazing. Interesting story behind Picasso's Last Words. One night while in NY Paul McCartney had dinner with Dustin Hoffman. Mr. Hoffman asked how Paul comes up with his music/lyrics. He challenged Paul to write a song right there at the table. Paul needed a subject so Dustin opened the newspaper and Paul noticed the story of Pablo Picasso passing away. The story goes Picasso had a dinner party and it lasted into the early morning. So he decided to call it a night and he turned to his guest and said, "drink to me, drink to my health. You know I can't drink anymore". He then proceeded to his bed and died. 🤯 Paul, on his guitar began playing the song that became "Picasso's Last Words". Just amazingly talented.

Hi Crystal! You threw me a curve with Helen Wheels. My copy had that opening side 2, glad you still covered it. For me, one of the best things about Paul's solo albums were the backing vocals. It's like he still wanted that Beatle vibe. Paul, Linda & Denny Laine were always great at that. If you get to the album London Town (1978), you'll notice the really awesome backing vocals. Anyway, great reaction as always. You just make it all better, cheers!

Crystal - Mamunia: This song kind of fits the current SoCal weather we're having right now, huh? No Words: Sounds like a Lennon/McCartney Beatles song. Picasso's Last Words: This song Paul wrote in response to actor Dustin Hoffman's request if he could write a song from off the top. Dustin tossed Paul a newspaper and Paul saw that on the front page that Pablo Picasso died and his obituary. So, Paul wrote this song with that in mind. The song itself I imagine as a painting in Picasso's style. Helen Wheels: This was the name of Paul's Land Rover he drove around. Glad you liked the album.

1985 is also one of my favourites from this album. I think of it as his Elvis track--not vocally, but he's being a real rock star on that song. Also lyrically interesting--given 1985 was the future and would be the year after 1984. Also the lyrics of No Words make me think this was for John--who sang "All you need is love"--and Paul is saying "I love you." Picasso's Last Words is a big favourite, for the lyrics and the music. He's singing about the death of the grand old painter, but the song is a celebration of his life.

My two cents are that Ram and Band on the Run are the only Paul solo albums that would make sense for a reaction channel, though I do really like a lot of others, e.g. Chaos and Creation in the Backyard, and Flowers in the Dirt. The thing with McCartney is his solo albums are often a great EP interspersed with filler that's mediocre or worse. (To be clear, though, I think McCartney is history's greatest songwriter. No one is perfect.)

1985 is my personal favorite off of this most excellent album and Paul is miles removed from the majority of musicians I have ever heard,he is basically peerless. My current favorite artist of the here and now is Poppy and she does many genres as well and is always surprising in what she presents . Paul McCartney is a legend and of the 4 Beatles, arguably the most rounded and consistently great to excellent at what he creates. STILL RUNNING - Side 2 on U.S. version begins with "Helen Wheels" McCartney deslikes that; - Mamounia is a hotel in Marrakesh, it means "safe haven" in Arabic; - No Words was written before the release of Wings' second album, Red Rose Speedway made it here; - Picasso's Last Words has the best story (following content taken from ITN doc): "McCartney says he was on vacation in Montego Bay, Jamaica where he "snuck" onto the set of the film Papillon where he met Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen. After a dinner with Hoffman, with McCartney playing around on guitar, Hoffman did not believe that McCartney could write a song "about anything", so Hoffman pulled out a magazine where they saw the story of the death of Pablo Picasso and his famous last words, "Drink to me, drink to my health. You know I can't drink anymore." McCartney created a demo of the song and lyrics on the spot, prompting Hoffman to exclaim to his wife: "look, he's doing it … he's doing it!" - Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five in early manuscripts was called "Piano Thing". You think the Grammy intimidate McCartney ? No!!! Up Next Go to "Venus and Mars" while there "Listen what the Man Said"

😎👍 Brilliant analysis as usual. Inserting reprises of "Jet" and "Mrs. Vanderbilt" into "Picasso's Last Words," was McCartney's attempt at recreating the audio equivalent of cubism, a style of painting that Pablo Picasso popularized. When you get the chance, by all means check out the song "Country Dreamer," which was not on the album, but was on the B-side of the "Helen Wheels" single. It's one of McCartney's most melodic efforts.😉

Even though Lennon and McCartney were still sort of at odds, Lennon said publicly it was the best album Paul had done since the Beatles, [sort of a jab there] but specifically said he really liked Picasso's Last Words the best. This album was a masterpiece, but only done by Paul, Denny Laine, and wife Linda McCartney with an addition to South African Musicians on one of two songs, and the orchestra arrangements later done in London. McCartney did bass, keyboards, some guitar, and drums!!! Synthesizer is prominent on this album. This was because when he wanted to go to Africa to record, [a story in itself], the other two Wings members abruptly quit the band. He said well, up theirs then, I'll do the album myself with Denny and Linda. Probably the best he ever did along with Tug of War in 1982. Ram coming in third maybe...the whole album was well written and well put together, with singles in the USA being Helen Wheels in Dec 1973, Jet in early 1974, and finally Band on the Run about May/June 1974. I used to play this album to death. It only won a Grammy for engineering...which I find incredibly hard to believe it wasn't at least nominated for album of the year and additional things.

I always thought Picasso's Last Words was like trying to create one of his Cubist's paintings where you see faces or objects from different perspectives all at once. So Paul takes the melody and turns it on it's head. In this case hearing it done if different ways. It took me a while to get used to it instead of skipping over it.

If you liked the harmonies in ‘No Words’, give a listen to the Beatles’ ‘If I Needed Someone,’ which was sung by George Harrison (which is a great song worth listening to anyway). After the first couple lines, the harmonies are very similar. There are even moments of ‘No Words’ that sound like they come from that song. Paul must have noticed that at some point (or maybe it was intentional) so maybe he just realized that it just worked so well with this song, or maybe he just used it as a bit of a wink and a nod to George.

Totally agree! I consider "No Words" a George tribute. With the "Let Me Roll It" john tribute , "Band on the Run" may be a faux Beatles album. "Drink to me" could have been sung by Ringo...
