Side two of Abbey Road is seared into the collective consciousness of at least two generations of people. Literally hundreds of millions of people. Of course the clock never stops moving and now there is a generation of people that have mostly never heard it. It's fun to watch people discover great older music and you do a wonderful and insightful job.

PS: Just in case no one told you: the guitar "solo" section in "The End" is all three guitarits together, trading licks in the following order: Paul, George, John. And then they repeat over and over again. So before the album (and the Beatles themselves) ends, Ringo gets a solo, and the other three get to wail out one last time. To go from "Love Me Do" to this in the space of 7 years is a pretty amazing growth spurt!

Yes, they did evolve, almost too quickly I thought, which may have contributed to them apparently burning out. They got so good at it that they could conceive, write and record a song in a few hours. And not just any song, a Beatles song, almost 300 of them and they were all unique. I guess they did as much as four good lads could do, which was more than anyone, so no complaints here.

While George was concentrating on the sitar, his guitar skills deteriorated and Paul did a lot of the Solos. I’d say George’s abilities returned by this time.

@@halweiss8671 I agree. What's always mystified me is that on Abbey Road George's playing suddenly becomes almost virtuoso like. I think the Get Back special offers a clue: he talks at one point about he feels his playing improving by virtue of the fact that they're playing as a band every day. And if you listen to his playing on One After 909, it's BRILLIANt, as is his rerecorded solo for the album version of Let It Be. I love his slide playing, but wish he had not abandoned his newly developed lead chops

“Her Majesty” was originally placed between “Mean Mr. Mustard” and “Polythene Pam”. They decided to take it out of the medley, and McCartney instructed it to be destroyed. However, EMI had a strict policy that no Beatles recording ever be destroyed and the tape operator added it to the end of the album. The Beatles heard it and liked it, so they decided to keep it as a “secret track” (it was not listed on the original album). So “The End” was actually supposed to be the end.

In the past I always thought "The End" would have been the perfect song to end their recording career, but now I think of having a little bit more after that as representing that there would never really be an end to them as their music would continue to be around...forever.
@rome8180
@rome8180 2 жыл бұрын
@@JaneFokster it totally undercuts the power of it. It's not a good song either. There's no such thing as too dramatic when it comes to the final moment of the best album (arguably) of the best band (inarguably). If it had been a secret song the way that CDs had secret songs in the '90s, with a bunch of space in between, that would be different.

Golden Slumbers, of course, is gorgeous, but it’s special to me because it makes me think of a dog I raised from pup to senile, deaf, but lovable old pooch. My wife and I got her when we got married, and it was just the three of us for fourteen years. But by 2020, our dog was suffering from dementia and her health began to fail, so we made the difficult decision to have her put to sleep. (We had the vet come out to our house so she didn’t have to leave her bed.) As she peacefully drifted off, my wife and I were by her side, giving her pets and cuddles, and I told her, “sleep pretty darling, do not cry, and I will sing a lullaby.”

A popular knowledgeable youtuber "Beato" says those two minutes of "The End" contains everything magical that defined the whole Beatle experience. Great lyric to finish on , a theme of" love and positiveness" (Abbey Road was the last album they played together"), the musicianship - freestyling in seamless transition one to the other, the harmonies, Ringo's drumming, the melody and the orchestration. @@edbad85 George's solo output remains my favorite of any group member. But his career went into the doldrums for awhile. Here are a few semi-interesting comments on some of the songs from my perspective. *Come Together* The one line that I've always found particularly interesting is when Lennon sings, 'he said one and one and one is three'. I enjoy it only bcuz he intentionally drags out each 'one' just a tiny bit. He sings, 'one and onnne and onnnnne is three'. I'm sure it's barely noticeable to most listeners but I think it's very creative touch. *Here Comes The Sun* The instrument you hear in the beginning is a Moog synthesizer. Harrison was one of the first people ever to purchase one. In the sequence of notes played in the intro, the pitch of last note that drops suddenly was unintentional. They had discovered that when they pressed the key and held it down, it was unable to hold a steady pitch. Being that the instrument Harrison had was essentially a prototype, they had to have a technician from the factory come down to the studio to resolve the malfunction. Ultimately they decided to leave it in the recording bcuz, in typical Beatles fashion, they often found a certain charm in minor mistakes and would view such things as oddly unique. *Carry That Weight* I recall reading that the reason all four Beatles sang 'boy, you're gonna carry that weight a long time' is bcuz they suspected this would be their final LP and knew that each of them would forever carry the reputation of being a Beatle. Needless to say, that's a lot of weight.

George bought one. He used it exclusively on his 2nd solo album “Electronic Sounds”. It’s not a great album but interesting to hear his experimentation. The others (John maybe) must have seen something in the sysnthesizer As they ask him to bring it in to Abbey Road studios. He later reused some of the material her generated for Electronic Sounds on the Apple Jam album that came with All Things Must Pass.

I'm 72 here in 2022. I grew up with the Beatles. I saw them in Toronto in '65 and '66. I became a studio and gigging musician because of their influence, like many others. I wasn't overly sad when they packed it in and went their separate ways because after Abbey Road, what more can you say? I do get a lump in the throat and a tad nostalgic when I hear the opening chords of Golden Slumbers and Paul sings, " Once there was a way to get back homeward. " To me, it signaled the end of an era, my teen years behind me and the following days pulling me into the future.

Really really looking forward to your detailed comments on the albums! I have a similar manner of getting familiar with an album. I really love that you are taking the time to really know their work. I'm also glad that you'll be listening to Abbey Road without breaking between the songs. The final set of songs (because to the end) is meant to be listened to altogether, similar to a classical suite. Anyway, I love the details you notice, and as someone who has heard the songs a thousand times, it's great to hear you articulate exactly what's happening in all those little flourishes.

Beautiful reaction!!! And, oh my goodness! at the end, telling us how you listened to Sgt. Pepper’s, inside and out, is so excellent, I can’t even tell you!! It’s impossible to give a truly proper reaction to a Beatles album only one time through. I’ve listened to many Beatle full album reactions, and I’m always left with the feeling that the person didn’t appreciate such and such a song, or such and such a moment, enough because they haven’t listened to it on it’s own enough. Or, such great songs and moments get overlooked because a whole album is so much material to even quite remember what you just listened to. It’s just too much. But how you listened to Sgt. Pepper over and over, fixes that completely. That was so smart, and so satisfying for us reactors who love the Beatles and don’t want you to miss anything! 😊. If I had my way, you could give us a whole new second video on each album breaking down how you NOW feel about each song after listening to it over and over again. I’m sure you could tell us things you discovered and liked that weren’t even noticed the first time through. My vote is that you would do that 😁.

Ok, I have watched quite a few of these "heard Abbey Road for the first time" videos, and on each one, nobody listens to the side two medley as a whole. They keep stopping between each segment. Now I understand that they are commenting on each track, and may not know that the real strength is in the complete medley. But they are missing the greatness of the medley by breaking it up into individual tracks. I hope that after they have "done their thing", that they go back and listen as intended. And possibly comment on it as a whole, as it was intended to be heard.

I think the word you are looking for when you talk about "bounce" on Here Comes The Sun is oscillation. It was on the new MOOG synthesizer they were playing with. At that time they weren't all in one units like they are now. So the separate oscillator was what they were playing with. You also hear it in the chorus.
@Vince_Steele
@Vince_Steele 2 жыл бұрын
George Harrison owned that particular synthesizer and it was in need of repairs. As soon as the note was released, instead of stopping it would dive down in pitch until a key was pressed again, which is how they got it to dive at the end of the intro, and how they got it to bounce around later on in the song.
@Sweetish_Jeff_
@Sweetish_Jeff_ 2 жыл бұрын
This is the first Beatles album which introduced the Moog. The “white noise” you hear at the end of “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” is the synthesizer, too.

No need to muck about with an oscillator when you can achieve a nicer effect from a faulty keyboard. Whoever decided it was an oscillator obviously wasn't aware of the real reason behind the effects.
@Vince_Steele
@Vince_Steele 2 жыл бұрын
On Here Comes the Sun, you made note of the synthesiser tone dropping at the end of the intro, and later on with it bobbling about. That was all thanks to George Harrison's fancy new Synthesiser being on the fritz. Normally you would release the key and the sound would stop, but because it was in need of repairs, the note would dive down to the lowest note possible instead, until a new note was played. So rather than wait for the repair man to service the thing before using it, George made the most of the situation and created the wonderful sounds that we hear on the final track. Which means that little bit of loose wiggle room you talk about is simply the synthesiser trying to drop the note into a dive before the next note gets hit.

@@albertschepis, it wasn't a mistake or unintentional. George liked the sound that it was making while it was having issues, so he incorporated it into the song by timing the fingering of the keyboard keys to get the desired result.
